List Mgmt. 2022 Draft Thread - Part I

2 months ago everyone was ready to chuck in the towel. Flat as anything.

I reckon everyone is absolutely chomping at the bit for next season to start now.
I had actually chucked in my membership, had stopped the monthly payments.

Two days later, they sacked the coach, recruited Lyon. got Lenny, Harvs and bj, got Misson, didn't trade out our picks (kept because Ben King decided to stay at GC), then picked up an A+ rated draft haul.

Didn't know I had so much power over the club :D:D.

The change in the club over the past 8 weeks is gobsmacking, I am really amazed what they have done. Gallagher has copped critisism however he was somewhat hamstrung in 2019 and 20 over trading, 21 he went well with NWM and the two NGA lads, and 2022 has completely nailed the draft.

So all in all the club could not have changed direction more radically off field since the end of the season. Obviously we are here to win games not sack coaches and draft players so the proof is in the future.

However the one thing a football club relies on from their supporters is hope. I had lost hope, we were drifting with Rats at he helm, our ex player media people were saying basically there was a disconnect at the club, the players were overindulged and were not being disciplined, and with some, Ratts was not reading the room. I could see more moribund years of nothingness.
But hope is back, even with next year probably being a learning year as the players need to have their bad habits lost and embrace the Ross model. It may take a season but it will come.

With the youngsters on board and with a bunch of players still not reaching their peak (Gres, Coff, Clark, Max, even Higgins, Josh Battle, etc) the future looks so much brighter than in early October.

Just a side observation but did I see Gubby Allan sitting in as a part of our recruiting team? Didnt know he was still part of the club?

The other was Trout Elshaugh was a part of the Essendon team. Made me laugh after he destroyed so many drafts at the Saints. Essendon deserve him....🤣

Very well put JB. Last year was the first that I totally lost hope with our club, my wife was worried about my apathy about the Saints and was concerned that I had given up on them. As you say it truly is amazing was has transpired in the last 2 months. I liked Ratts and admired his resilence with his personal tragedy. But the removal of him and the subsequent events that have unfolded has seen us transformed and has given me and many other fans renewed hope for this next season and our future. Bring on 2023.

Not expecting any Rookies today apart from McLenan as a CatB Rookie we have 2 spots left on the list they will leave them open for the SPP and Mid Season Draft I suspect.

Stocker will train first and be considered closer to Jan for the SPP spots.

Of those still available I like Drury, Magor, Seth Campbell and Archie Lovelock. All probably project as forwards at AFL level and by the reporting I think we have shown interest in Lovelock recently, so he is a possibility, but he is similar to Hotton so we might think we have that slot covered.

I really like Drury - If he was 183cm not 176cm he would have been drafted for sure he does his best work in midfield for Oakliegh but is probably to small to really prosper there at AFL level. Still hope he gets picked up deserves a shot.

I guess the one a lot of people liked pre draft who is still on the board is Szybkowski but I would avoid him he is a pure mid so like Bytel or Dunstan can't really play anywhere else and like Bytel and Dunstan is likely to be 5th 6th choice on an AFL list. The comparison with Stocker is probably fair and I think he falls into the same category but Stocker is already developed so can provide some insurance next year. Still I would avoid both. Hawks could do with a bigger bodied inside mid mainly because the one they did take Hustwaite I suspect will be a backman at AFL level.

I think there's a lot of supporters will echo your sentiments. It seems like the club has taken about ten steps since seasons end and they've all been positive ones. Now that's a change I can handle.

I'm just guessing, but endurance is supposed to be a concern. Keeler is probably more of a long-term project and some clubs won't even look at those types. Adelaide was also in a very strange pick situation with the FS player they needed to match, so that might have been a factor.

I'm sure they'll get stuck into him the moment he shows any promise with us.

He looks explosive for a big man though, and like Ryder has natural forward craft.

Can someone do the quick calculations - do we have two spots open plus a Cat B spot with Josiah leaving?

OUT (7 + 1 Cat B = 8): Hannerbery, Geary, Ryder, Long, Kent, Lienert, Joyce, Kyle (Cat B)

IN: Cordy, Phillipou, Van Es, Hotton, Keeler (5)

Leaves 2 list spots and 1 CAT B spot?

Reckon we are potentially on here for one rookie spot, then leaving an availability for Stocker or others in the SPP or MSD.

How good was the haul!!

Even better when we didn't touch our Future Picks- which we'll need to grab all the 2023 SA Talent!

Now add a Rookie, Stocker and our NGA Cat B Rookie and get them to work!
Have we confirmed we're taking McLennan as a Cat B?

I liked Stocker a lot in his draft year, and he’s one of “us” being a Saints supporter…

But playing devil’s advocate, do we need him?

What’s his point of difference from Steele, Ross, Crouch, Gresham, Windhager, Owens, Bytel, Byrnes, and now Phillipou and Hotton?

Still a few players who I reckon would be worth picking up as a rookie.

I would leave a spot for SPP but mid season nearly always a vacancy is created by injury.

The players I would have some interest in still are

Sam Gilbey
Mitch Szylowoski
Adam D’Aloia
Jaiden Magor
Jed Hagan
Blake Drury
Archie Lovelock
Jason Gilbee 191cm wingman from Bendigo Pioneers is another I would be intersted in. He came equal 1st in the 2km time trial at the combine.

Point of difference?

If we compare the ones who have played AFL.
Him and Owens are the only ones who haven't had 20 disposals.

Owens has had a game with 9 contested possessions, stocker hasn't.

I'd rather take a punt on D'Aloia or someone .

Rookie draft should be interesting, with a few names still on the board.

Luke Teal, Ethan Phillips, Anthony Munkara, Jed Hagan, Adam D’Aloia, Jason Gilbee would all still have hopes.

Essendon have already said they'll be listing Munkara as a Cat B rookie.

I’m kinda with you.

Our days of taking Carlton rejects on died with the 80s.

Unless there’s a compelling reason to take him, I’d rather take a punt.

Brisbane are taking the brain as a Cat B
