Training Preseason 22-23

I like specialist forwards staying forward in this day and age, and Cody is as good as it gets up forward. But more than happy for him to have a few runs through there from time to time to change things up for us and him if he’s struggling to get in the game etc as we know forward pocket can be a lonely position at times and you can’t star there all the time.

But I hope he keeps his focus on becoming the best small forward in the league and kicking bulk goals rather than any any meaningful shift to midfield in coming years
For me it's similar to what Steve Johnson used to do for Geelong if they or he needed a shake up or a bit of "X-Factor" throw him in for a couple of CBAs to change things up and get involved but still have his predominate role up forward

With Baz and Treloar probably getting more inside midfield minutes this year, I can see Weightman filling that high half forward/extra mid at stoppages role for periods.

That seems a more logical evolution of his role than any significant minutes as a hardcore inside mid.

Treloar needs to just get on the paddock first. I don't think he's ready in time for Round 1.

With Weightman playing midfield, it reminded me that one of the best small forwards in the comp spends plenty of time in the midfield in Tom Papley.
Genuine game winner too. One of the best individual games I've ever seen from a player was Papley vs the Eagles in 2019.

27 disposals, 7 marks, 16 score involvements, 5 goals, 2 assists. Just utterly dominated, it was incredible. If Weightman could even get close to Papley's level as a player, we'd be laughing

Unacceptable is also an exaggeration and I have not been throwing Spangler or the forwarms under a bus
Unacceptable is not an exaggeration. And I didn't say you did, did I?
Yeah but it’s not the issue he makes it out to be
It is. It's very much an issue when scores from turnover was huge against us last year.

If you're playing a game style that values possession and defensive pressure inside your own F50, and play an attacking setup with your defense, and you hold the leagues leader in turnovers, what do you think that does?
Dunkleys never broke lines like Smith would be the obvious answer

happy to keep my head where it is as it’s more level than yours
It's not an obvious answer because Dunkley is doing his thing at the coalface where it is notoriously harder to be efficient with the pill.

And no, it's clearly not.
Did Lachie Hunter get confused who he plays for now ?
Wut?

Despite kicking incredibly straight against us in the game we played late season, he has been a pretty poor set shot to my eyes during his career. Especially from close range.

I don’t think we will need to train him there!

I haven't got the numbers for 2022 but here is Rory Lobb's accuracy for distance (numbers in brackets are shots that didn't score)...

From memory he kicked about 5 straight from what seemed to all be >50 in that match against us last year at Marvel, so I'd expect his long distance record to be much improved from that game alone.

On the AFL website good news about Rory Lobb.

Meanwhile, Bulldogs recruit Rory Lobb has avoided a serious interruption to his first pre-season at the club after injuring his ankle on Friday.
The 29-year-old sent a scare through the Dogs camp last week when he hobbled off Skinner Reserve and applied ice to the injury.

But the former Docker showed no signs of the issue on Monday morning, completing a full session to continue a strong maiden summer at the Dogs.

5/6 shots from outside 50 that day...

Q1 13:04 - GOAL - 54.2m
Q2 13:21 - GOAL - 51.7m
Q2 18:01 - GOAL - 51.0m
Q3 12:02 - GOAL - 50.8m
Q3 13:36 - BEHIND - 40.0m
Q3 16:07 - BEHIND - 50.3m

Excluding other results in 2022, it's remarkable that he went 120 odd games with just 21 shots on goal outside 50 then had 6 in a single game against us.

I know Bevo preaches versatility but I’d rather Cody just works on his small forward craft.

Papley is a great player. He doesn’t get the kudos he deserves because he winds up opposition fans with his face-punchable chitter-chat.
