I think he's been a disappointment for Essendon so far.
Understood, but that is the choice we had wasn't it? Short term relief (Crouch) vs Long Term promise (Caldwell). Same as Jones, Butler, Ryder - we put the immediate future ahead of long term pay off. Some have speculated that this is what saw Gags get the boot and I wouldn't be surprised.

Caldwell is still young and could well end his career as a gun. Anyone?

To me it says more about Caldwell, he heard Crouch was signing and decided to go for the team where he wouldn't have competition for midfield spots. I don't really want a player who thinks he should be a walk-up starter. You have to compete and show your worth no matter what pick you went or how highly rated you were. Crouch has been a very solid player for us and I think he'll probably end up having a better career than Caldwell.

Crouch cost us nothing though, so different to the others

It allowed us to also use draft picks on a young Jack Higgins and also go to the draft

Unfortunately the best we could do was Matt Allison

I’ve got no issue with it.

Windy, Owens and Phillipou look to be tracking better than him

Would he be able to play in a Lyon coached team that expects courage and head over the ball.
Darling by name and nature.

I was upset at the time but not anymore.

Crouch has a free hit has been excellent.

Caldwell really hasn’t done anything to excite me. He’s into his fifth season now and hasn’t showed anything that makes me think he’ll be an A grader.

Think windhager will be better than him

Gags to me was the ideal talent detector , having played AFL , played as a captain and a coach in the SAFL along as being no idiot he has had a very good term at this club - has gone through massive turn over and has now got us into a position to be a force.
Luck it could well be , but he will be a legend if these kids we currently have turn in to superstars.

Think the kids are more to do with Chris Toce (spelling)

Are we doing 2019 trade period again? How many times does it need to be said we had one first round dp, we still have Butler, Jones, Howard, and Hill on the list, Hill looks to be coming good under Ross, Howard is under rated here, Jones is injured all the time, Butler is becoming depth.
We also got Byrnes at 52 and Leo who will probably get delisted. We lost Bruce and Steven.
It's a myth we sacrificed lots of high dps for those players, it wasn't two firsts and a bunch of 2nds for O'Meara.

Caldwell was the following year

I am really happy with Crouch I think he's been great fir our midfield, but considering where we are now, I wonder if it wasn't a mistake burning Jye Caldwell to go for him instead?

Granted Crouch cost much less in trade terms, and without him our midfield would probably be one of the poorest in the AFL but if we had our time again with SOS and RTB, do you think we'd still do what we did or have the confidence to back ourselves with a longer prospect like Caldwell?

Just asking, genuinely don't know.
I refuse to believe that we changed our minds on Caldwell considering the hard on we had for him so at the end of the day I don’t think we had a choice. Caldwell chose Essendon for whatever reason but it’s not looking like we missed out on much.

From one of his mates, he was trying to get his manager to up the offer after Essendon came late with a better offer. We just didn't respond to them again after we signed Crouch. Was already mentally a Saint and had told all his mates that he'd play with us.

Butler was about 23yo and cost almost nothing

Jeez thats a bit poor from us, looking back at the trade period in 2020, we could've traded pick 21 (Matt Allison) on for Caldwell and that would have almost matched what the Bombers gave up for him. So logistically it works. I wonder why they didn't pursue him after we got Crouch.

Not sure about that, I'd heard he was all in and we pulled out or dropped the value of the offer to alow us to go for Crouch instead.

Taking mature recycled players costs a role for a kid and even a late pick might be a star rather than a limited known quantity. We overestimated how close we were at the time. Being a bit shitter for a couple of years might have got us a couple more gun kids as well.

It sounded like we just stopped contact.

Worth keeping an eye on the likes of Wingard and Amon this year i reckon.

Neither will be thrilled about getting flogged every week for the next couple years.
Would come cheap trade wise you would expect.

If we have a good year and make finals etc either or both would suit our needs, especially if gresh and/or nwm leave
You could flog me every week for 800k a year

The club made the right call. Had a deal stitched up and his manager upped the price at the 11th hour coz Essington swung in.

I’d imagine Treacy will be dropped this week

Rumours from the Freo supporters are if he doesn’t get a good run of games this year then he is gone

He’s looked promising at times, 195cm and seems to have that aggression you want from a key forward.

Can’t imagine he’d cost a lot

Butler being subbed out of the game last week is a nice little reminder that our speedy small forward stocks are extremely low. Nobody likes to acknowledge it but they’re pretty important if you want a premiership even if they don’t average a goal a game. We need to find 3 or 4 over the next couple of years.
