Draft Review 2017 - Revisit the 2017 AFL draft

It’s not saying much though. BZT would be a star KPD if he keeps up his form from the past two rounds.

Although to be fair to LDU he did seemingly break out late last year
LDU was terrific back end of last year and pretty good for a good chunk before that.
Been a slow burn, but really look good now.

Dow over LDU remains one of the most bizarre draft decisions in recent history.
More so when you consider how tough a midfield Cripps - Walsh - LDU would be to match.

Remains an interesting one for us
Traded 11 out for Smith and one good season. got the 2nd back that was eventually Balta and sent ours out that landed TDK. But traded both for Stringer...who has also played one good season :p

Balta & TDK would solve 2 big issues for us at the moment (CHB with size & a ruck/fwd)

In a vacuum two seconds for Stringer seems like a reasonable deal but unfortunately for us the 2017 second was unreal.

Balta, Ryan, Taylor, Spargo, De Koning, Fritsch, McCartin and Petty taken after the Essendon pics.

We should have squeezed the dogs harder on the Stringer deal. Given the uncertainty over his future he was probably only worth one second.

or we rebuild at a time we were primed for one :p

Feel sorry for Dow in a way. North were very keen on him and he was a north fan growing up. Was advertised as a fast in and out mid with decent foot skills. Shame it’s not working out.

Vaguely remember his player comparison being Patrick Dangerfield. Very inaccurate other than the fact that he had speed and couldn't kick. Always feel some sympathy for these blokes despite the fact they made the AFL. Must be immensely frustrating to have that sort of pressure and not live up to it.

Dow is actually still a very good clearance player which is where the Danger comparison had come from. The problem is he is next to useless in general play/transition and can’t play anywhere else on the ground.

You can’t just have a guy line up at centre bounces, be above average there, and then be near irrelevant for the rest of the game. I suspect this will be his last year on the list unless something drastically changes. His contract probably saved him last year.

Yep Brayshaw leads career to date but LDU is closing very quickly.

LDU has a high contested game, high disposal efficiency and high meters gained. Not many in the game tick those 3 boxes.
I'm not having a dig at LDU, I think he's a gun. It was in response to the poster who suggested he's well ahead of Brayshaw if doing this draft again.

Yeah we can only go off what’s happened so far brayshaw was the
22u22 captain (3x22u22) AA, bnf winner and mvp last year LDU has been none of those.

Brayshaw started his career really strongly and LDU had early injuries. But as it stands in 2023 there is little between them and LDU has started the year better.

For sure after 2 rds, there’s 23 rds
he needs to continue for the whole season.
If he can carry north near finals win a bnf and be top 10 it would start to be a good argument.
Until then he’s degoey like.
He’s best is amazing and more eye catching then brayshaws and Walsh.
But you’re not taking him over plug in and play week in week out self driven future captains especially when you’ve got the number 1 pick.
JHF is more talented then Caleb serong but I’m taking serong everyday of the week
These are examples to help point.
LDU is an amazing footballer and I’ll be the first to change my opinion when the runs on the board.
But for me these threads are purely on output to date.
