Why, from virtually the outset, do we always champion the undersized (often even a bit one-paced) kid who we know will slip back a bit? It rarely proves to be a boon for us. I'd rather hope that someone shows form a bit late and firms at around our pick. The deeper you go in the draft, the more it's a case of diminishing returns when it comes to 'what you see is what you get' type players who have already been overlooked.

I agree with your post but I think you are underselling the amount we gave up in that trade. I’m not sure how other view it, but I see pick 16 for Marchy and then the rest is for Pickett, when you look at this trade at the Tuohy trade, theyre both terrible, add trading a 2nd round pick for a 3rd and two 4s and it gets worse.

We gave up Geelongs F1 (15) pick 45 and pick 58

Received Marchbank, Pickett and GWS F2 (35)
We basically lost out on all that GWS trade dump garbage --
Geelong do salary dump take a decent player plus pick 7 and say thank you 😂😂
Melbourne footscray do salary dumps end up with A grade talent while past club paying 25-30 % of salary .
SOS don't do dumps and multiple trades to well .. same as all the second hand rucks he dumped at our door

Pretty keen to see if Brad Close would like to move on from the Cats to the Blues. Think he would add a lot to our forward line.

Also I like Ash Johnson even though he is currently at the filth. End of his 3rd year as a rookie so you just never know.
Close held in very high regard internally at the cats. They would unfortunately not be letting him go for all the gold in 50 cent's teeth.

Heard tonight the Darcy Parish is off to the cattery next season.

Tbh I'm not sold on Young as a long term KPD yet. He doesn't like physicality and forwards who do give him trouble. He's a finesse defender at this point, his intercepting and reading of the play is good but his contested play needs a fair bit of work imo.

I'd take McKay over Young for sure, there was a period last yr where McKay was one of the better key defenders in the league. I don't think Young has ever got close

Le. Young was originally coming across as the 3rd wheel in the backline, with JW & LJ the KPD.

Trade/Delist - Silvagni, Honey, Ed Curnow, Fisher, Obrien.

I agree with you that all those players should rightly be in the gun at the end of the year but when you consider all the oft injured players like Cunners, Marchy, Philp and Martin who we also need to offload, my concern is how many players can possibly turn over in one off season?

Well thats really the core of the issue. Voss and Austin probably went a bit conservative last year being the first year under a new coach which is fair enough. We've all been around watching through the entirety of these players careers so can probably point to weak points in our list a bit easier than a fresh set of eyes would.

Obviously this comment Carrie’s into a list management issue but how many of our injured players (the ones that never get better) are out of contract and we can move them on for cap space to bring in 1-2 free agents that will make us better.

Marchbank
Cuningham
Martin

All should be on average to above average coin. Surely we can fill their roles with;

KPD - Ben McKay/Tom Doedee/Mason Redman
FWD/Mid - Alex Neal-Bullen/Riley Bonner/ Jade Gresham/ Lewis Melican
FWD - Lachie Schultz/ Toby McLean
Bonner in the forwardline is interesting

Don't think we need a mini rebuild, as some suggest...

We just need
  • some small forwards who can crumb and kick goals...
  • Plus a mid or two with pace and foot skills...
  • Our list to stay healthy
To appease discussion...
If we were to go down the mini rebuild track... Over the next couple of years, I'd be open to this...

LOB only just got a 2 year deal. would be strange to now delist him.

You delist or retire a few of them and you ensure the other few will become depth via draft/trade.

Cutting all 5 of those plus Dow, Martin, Gov, Plow, Fog, Cuners, who most want gone would be a disaster.
Well I would keep Martin, Dow, Gov and heaven help me for saying it... Plowman :sob: (Only for his ability to stay on the park)

I'd be getting rid of Fog, Cunners, Silvagni, Fisher, Honey, Obrien, Marchy and retiring Ed.

Then depending on the ability to trade them and what we could get in return I'd also be fine if Austin tried moving on TDK and/or Williams but not expecting either to happen.

Lets say the rumours are true that we're trying to bring in B Mckay... We will have to be moving on some salary so one of the above two would likely have to go imo. Either one of them or Gov.

New half forward line is a must this off season, don't care how we get it done just need to find a way. You simply cannot play good footy in the modern game with half forwards who can barely find the ball when the midfield has about 200 possessions between them.

I agree, imo we are in a similar position to Port in 2018. They cut some loose ends to get a few extra bites of the apple in the 2018 superdraft and had a huge resurgence up the ladder with some fresh and exciting youth.

We need to get rid of a few players and bring in some youth and a couple of role players to help in areas of weakness and I think we'll be fine.

Add a couple of players fit & firing and we’re a different outfit. Unfort pinned our hopes on the continually injured.
DC & Martin up forward.
Williams down back would have changed our dynamics this year.

Missing a 3rd marking, mobile tall. JSOS falters too often with what he should be providing as his bread & butter (marks & kicking goals). Can’t fault his pressure, which needs to transfer to others.
Crafty & efficient HFF’s + some front & centre small forwards. Owies cops some flak but at least hits the scoreboard & packs.

Then the overall disposal of the team needs a work over. How can we not hit up lead up marking options for shot on goals…

Ben McKay is a great player - but he is just so far from what we need right now. We need to target the draft and acquiring players with elite kicking skills and spread from the contest. Another small/medium forward should also be prioritised. A key defender is so far down the priority list it's not funny. Add to that the fact that he is injury prone, a restricted FA (so will need to do a trade) and will demand decent $$ and it's a big NO.

100% agree. More worried about McGovern as getable

I am as triggered as most on here, examining the list. There are some obvious LONG TERM flaws which need to be systematically addressed.

We have a minuscule draft hand next year, we are not righting the ship. Development and opportunity for our younger players becomes paramount. We cannot afford a version of Brisbane’s “go home four (or was it 5)”. If we allow Kemp and Carroll to walk it will be an enormous fail. Dow, I question. He is easy to dismiss, but a couple of games I watched over the off season showed some ultra exiting cameos. I would joke to see some evidence one way or the other. It does feel very hypocritical to dismiss. Him while giving our “guns” a pass when not running defensively.

I like, even love some aspects of our list management, while others astound me. The number of fringe/rookie players given two year contracts is astounding. Fisher, is a role player contracted until the end of 2025, when he becomes a RFA if he has fallen out of favour. We seem to have a policy of handing out long term contracts, presumably at some sort of discount. The game is changing rapidly. (Today’s news is tomorrow’s fish and chip wrapper - apologies to the perplexed young ‘und). We are ‘sweating’ on the end of inflated contracts for Dow and McGovern, with a couple more a concern going forward.

We cannot knee jerk here, and Voss’s stubbornness is a concern that a fire sale may be a thing in the nit so distant future. We lost our depth Setterfield and Stocker for SFA, that was an abomination. I do not want Kemp, Carroll and Dow to follow. I don’t want us to overpay for TDK when Pitto is clearly our number one ruck when fit. If we decide to move past Martin, then we must delist him. No use having dead wood around the group if attitudes are sun par. If he is focussed, by all means let him fight for his spot. (I know his contract hurts, but it is great seeing the investment of Williams around the group)

We need a shrink for Harry and a couple of others. H has the potential to be Hawkins with “wheels”. I have resisted the questions on Russell, but perhaps I am as stubborn as Vossy. Harry, Youngy, Kemp, TDK and some of our smaller types are all sub standard for core strength. Fair to say modern strength and conditioning is a bit of a w**k fest. Some are happy to enlist tried and true methods, while others spend a lifetime studying and experimenting. Starting to think AR is a bit of a theorist using our group for his own research. Hope I am wrong. I have never questioned his credentials, but so many “professionals” today are seduced by innovation. We want innovation with our coaches and stability from our conditioners.
