Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

In a strange way the rookie list might be a good spot to be for Hughes’ own interests.

This year Treacy and Banfield have to be upgraded or delisted.

Next year that’s Worner and Kuek*

Not sure whether MSD picks can spend a third full season on the rookie list. When the 2019 crop we’re going into their third full season the AFL just said that rookies could have a fourth year. This season is the year we find out I guess as it’s two and half years from the 2021 MSD.

If we stay at 36 senior listed players then it might not take quite as much for Hughes to be given a contract for the 2025 season. If we get an injury or two in the backline next year I can easily see Hughes playing enough games to justify it.
Yeah agree on this, it's whether the players see it that way or not though

Shoota in his recent interview saw it a different way

It's an interesting thing that players definitely feel like it's a demotion even though it has basically none of the old rules that actually made it a demotion

Who will we delist ?
How many spots do we need to open up ?
Hamling should be gone.
Willow reluctantly 😭..
Trav colyer.
Tabs?

Walters still has a good year or 2 left.
Benning would be another definite you'd think. Henry and Sturt would be likely to want a trade in my opinion. Perhaps Will Brodie too even though he is contracted.

Benning just doesn’t seem to be progressing. Still in Peel reserves.

I know Meek played a lot in Peel reserves but he looked like he was progressing.

To retire/delist at end of season

Colyer
Hambling
Benning

Then a few trade possibles which I won’t list out of respect for them.

Sturt surely gone
Henry likely too

But they’ll want to save at least 1 of those over until next year you’d think otherwise too hard to find the 2024 list changes

Don’t think this is the year we’d move too many off the list. 4 max imo.

Hamling & Benning are gone.

Wilson or Colyer - reckon we’d keep 1, more likely wilson.

Henry (trade or stay). Wouldn’t get much for him imo.

Reckon we’d keep Sturt unless he wanted out.

There is Zero chance of there only being 4 list changes from the 2023 playing. It simply doesn’t happen to any club at AFL level in the modern era to have such a small number of players turned over. Poster get attached to fringe players all the time on here and yet by the end of trade week most of those guys are delisted or traded on. There will be at least 7 players gone from the 2023 playing list by 2024. Probably more TBH.

I wonder what the trade value would be for Taberner? It's probably not much if he doesn't get back out there this season, but it'd almost be better for him to see if a fresh start somewhere else might help his durability.

At this stage i would genuinely be satisfied if we let him walk for pick 100 just to move his salary off the books and give us some more flexibility.

Unless two of Amiss, Treacy and Corbett are injured i would be disappointed to see him playing. I genuinely think he's done and offers zero going forward.

Henry will surely be gone by seasons end? It’s hard to see where his next AFL game is coming from unless there big injury issues and the best we will offer (if at all) is a one year extension on base wages of $110k plus match fees, or thereabouts.
If someone like Melbourne offered him a 2 year deal he will be crazy not to take it. Probably for an F3 pick at best - maybe even an F4.

Wilson (out of contract) for mine likely delisting to make four on primary list. Sturt and Wagner a chance to be delisted and added as rookies. From memory we have to upgrade players on rookie list like Treacy, Banfield, Schultz I think.

That would make 6 from Primary list but three spaces left for ND. Henry a potential trade out. Prob one trade in. Sturt if to be delisted might seek an opportunity elsewhere but I struggle to see us getting anything if we’re not re-signing him.

Taberner still a year to run on contract. He won’t be delisted. I doubt there would be much interest in trade due to his injury issues. The question will be likely asked given how the team has changed with Treacy, Amiss pairing well as KPF.

So in the vicinity of 6 list changes. I really think this is best for the club after many changes last year. Fiddle around with our draft picks and F2 to see if we can get ourselves a first, second and third.

21 & F2 > top 14 pick & F4
40 & 44 > early 30’s

13, 31, 58

No pt F4. He’s playing well at Peel. F3 about right otherwise get involved with another club like hawks and flip some future picks around so we end up with Brockman.

Do we see much longevity in Walters?

He seems to be happy and relatively health, knows his role

Can he do a fyfe and sign on for another year or two?

Can we get two years of value from him?

I'd hope it's one year contracts for Sonny now

The next contract for Walters should be his last. He's 32 and while he hasn't ever been basing his game on athletic ability we are in the stage where his body being able to back up week after week will decide. Two years in my opinion, with the second year being a coaching contract where Walters is on the rookie list for salary cap reasons and he starts the year as a player but finishes the year as a coach.

What does that make suma now 0/6 on people leaving freo calls? Must have some pretty useless contacts or be fabricating it all.
Suma on a streak there. He won't want to break that.

He has become the epitome of a click bait journalist rather than a specialist.

Talk of trading tabs with a year to run is crazy. He’s not worth anything on the market, and for us he should be cheap backup for amiss provided we can get him relatively fit again.

dockeroo is right though - highly unlikely to be less than 6 changes, and 1 of those will be a trade that we might not want.

it is even possible we would consider trading Darcy for a forward / ruck so that dogga can be a ruck/forward.

Or I can just scribble "Forward /" on Sean Darcy's file after he signs a five year extension?

We really want to avoid becoming like the bin chickens, where we keep yesterday's heroes on the list for sentimental reasons when they are clearly past their prime.

I think there are many factors that go into it. West Coast's list profile was ****ed and anyone could see that, Nic Nat was 32, one of about a dozen blokes about to retire and was in the middle of a 14 week layoff with a knee injury when he signed for 2.

Nobody batted an eyelid when a 33 year old Pendlebury signed a 2 year deal, cos he was fit and playing good footy and Collingwood weren't about to fall off a cliff.

Fyfe has been very injury prone but is back in the team and contributing. He clearly has a role to play as a leader and is one of 2 players on the list who has played over 200 games. He's 31, a 2 year deal isn't out of the question given his position and our list profile

Our list is in a completely different position to theirs, it's a problem to think about in 8 years time
