Wouldn't north take him?

Not that we would get much for him
Why ?

He is not doing much at Sandy
Over a million dollars the next 2 years for an average player, he would only taking games of a young player

When did he last play a good block of footy?

He's a contracted player, just can't dump him.

Another mistake by the list management to give him such a long contract at decent rates... when he wasn't performing.

We all dreamed that he would come good, sometimes players just don't unfortunately.
4 years for him was stupid part of the reason Gaggs is gone

And would be one the kind of money some of Geelong's superstar players are on. Same with the Tigers. They could bring in Lynch because they didn't pay their GOPs star money.
Well l suppose the club could afford it because we had no stars to throw the money at and so long as said GOPs remain appreciative that they were paid forward then it may still work out for the best.

I still hold out some hope for Jack Billings. I think he’s got a different set of qualities to Butler and Hill. Better in the air, can kick goals, doesn’t shirk the tackle or contest, and would be a stronger rotation through the midfield.

Probably needs to improve his running and explosiveness to impress Ross Lyon but that’s tough given his limited preseason.

I thing goals is his only way back in. If Billings is kicking goals consistently and can do that at AFL level then he can hold a spot.

Maybe allowing Hill to restructure and end the Paton to the wing experiment.

I’m loving the push to gut the plodders on the list.

Jones, Gresh, Billings, Bytel, Dougal, Membrey, Paton, Highmore Coops and Dmac are all players that won’t push us to the top 4. We need to cut ties hard with any players still plodding along like Ratts or Richo will give them a cuddle and a beer telling them that they’re working just as hard as Geelong.

Onwards and upwards

Depends on who you’re replacing them with
Membrey and Howard are not plodders

Billings free agency fell right as the salary cap was frozen and lists were reduced due to covid. This meant multiple clubs could no longer afford the extra 200k+ that is required to get a free agent over the line. Plenty of clubs would have taken Billings on his 2019 era form but none of them were going to break the salary cap to do it. He re-signed on reportably a half million a year which is absolutely bog standard for a player of his ability.

I know its the popular echo chamber attitude on here to engage selective memory and pot players, particually ones who have had serious injury over that period of time, but at least discuss in good faith and context.

Getting rid of say Gresh and Paton to bring in Dow and TDK we have gone backwards imo

I'd classify them as GOP's. Membrey is getting older now too and we all know the issues with Howard... club is actively on the look out for a key back

It's going to be an interesting 2nd half of the season, many careers are on the line.

Howards job on Buddy this weekend is a huge one. Hope he plays well, if he can stop Buddy, we should win.

Maybe but it's pretty unlikely we'll be getting rid of so many players from the list's top 30 in a single year.

Reckon we should just be making a grab for Bing next year and have him fill in as CHB for a season or two till one of Van Es or Adams are ready to go.
No need to spend up on another KPD or costly mid before our window opens.

Tip everything into improving draft position.

Use this year and next to pay forward some contracts for a FA attack starting end of next year.

Outs:
Jones
Dmac
Billings
Ross
Pato
Highmore
TC
Gresh*

Ins:
Ruckman
3-4 draftees
1 x SPP
1 x MSD

Never going to reach the heights we hoped, but his disappointing heights are Mt Everest compared to the new Robert Eddy in Byrnes.
Poor comparison.
Eddy was a mature rookie, who struggled to get his hands on the ball 12 disposal average. ( averaged 12 in his last ( 3rd) year too ).
Byrnes can at least get it, career average 14, and 19 this year.

So you think 2 guys you pick up from the State leagues, and a 4th round pick are better than the best of your hit list?

The old “war chest” is great in theory and we can “target” whoever we like, but there’s not been a heap of moves in the free agent era that have been purely on cash/years. I’d be blown away if we got Parish for example, that just doesn’t happen much.
The draft and undervalued/developed early career types still crucial as we build into the Ross 2.0 era

It's crucial to firstly place yourself in contention. There's no point looking for expensive recruits till then.
