List Mgmt. 2018 AFL draft

I wasn't heaps excited about Rozee at the time, but I was satisfied we'd gotten skillful players who could go inside or outside, and I've been absolutely blown away. Importantly, the 3 seem to really push each other and spur each other on, and that enthusiasm is contagious.

My concern was missing out on good KPP’s. We are still short at least one KPD, but worries about too few KPP’s drafted (early enough) has been our lot the last 7 years.

Completely agree. Trading away Howard was criminal IMO. I wonder how long this regime's lack of respect for KPPs will continue to hurt us. We're not going to get Charlie Dixon types falling in our lap every 5 years.

I think this yr we have a good chance to pick up a couple of KP players in the draft. This has to be our main priority.

The reason Howard was swung forward is because he could not be trusted with ball in hand from the back half. His turnovers were regular and hurt us as they usually turned into oppo goals. McKenzie is excelling in his role and is a reliable kick. The club is building one of the most damaging and dangerous forward lines in the league. Wait until you see Georgiades, Marshall and Williams in the same forward line. All can run, jump and have exquisite ground ball skills.

This is how I feel too, except that each of our draftees has a toughness about them and is more inside-outside than outside. This trio complements the trio of SPP, Atley and Drew really nicely. Now we need all six of them to reach their potential under Schofield's mentorship.

To be honest I'm happy we took Butters instead of Clark. While Clark clearly has enormous upside given his limited exposure to serious footy prior to this year, Butters looks like a natural, clever footballer, and our players have lacked footy smarts for a long time.

Duursma has his admirers. His kicking doesn't look great to me, but he clearly has pace and can also win his own ball.

We've gone for three exciting, smooth moving players.

Personally, I think Rozee will end up the most exciting non-tall player in this draft (i.e. outside of Lukosius and M King).
Not bad for a change, PJ, not bad. First post in this thread. Came in at page 30-ish and for once not too negative or hyperbolic. Maturing, slowly but surely.

I do love this thread, especially around the page 16 mark when Butters is picked. People were melting.

Andrew Moore 2.0”
“My early thoughts are I’d rather have Wingard and Polec back”
“The Butters pick annoys me”

Absolutely smashed this draft. Just need Duursma to get going and become all Australia

Carlton could be a big improver next year IMO. They haven't lost anyone of note and they've brought in Walsh, Setterfield, McGovern, Stocker, Fasolo and Newman who'll all play plenty of footy next year. Plus natural improvement from the likes of Cripps, Curnow, Weitering, SPS, Dow, Fisher, McKay etc etc. That's no guarantee to be a top 4 pick.
Lol Carlton. I posted this in 2018. It's now 2023 and they still haven't improved.

Don't know if this article was posted somewhere else as the search function wasn't working yesterday, so given this thread has been bumped, it fits here, but the HPN guys wrote this article for ABC before Friday night's game and did their analysis of the transformative affect for Port at the 2018 draft.

Sometimes to take a leap forward, you need to take a small step back. Heading into the last round of the 2018 AFL season, Port Adelaide sat outside the eight on percentage.

A win, and a Geelong loss, would have seen them play finals. But a 22-point loss to Essendon saw them stay at home in September instead.

For the third time in four years, the Power missed the eight, and thoughts turned to the future. Many of Port's biggest contributors were growing longer in the tooth, even if they had finished fifth the year before.

"A couple of years ago we identified this draft pool of players as being very talented and our list management strategy was to maximise our picks in the first round," national recruiting manager Geoff Parker told the Port Adelaide website after the draft.............

I like this graphic of how we got our 3 picks is a good reference point for people who forget all the moves.

We had pick 10 which became pick 12 after a couple of bids at the draft. That got us Butters.

The Boak draft thread is even better.

Certainly can't criticize the recruitment team. They have a wonderful eye for talent including Robbie Gray who from memory had big wraps on Butters

Not gonna actually quote it, but loved this after the Rozee pick....

So we traded Polec, Pittard, 23, 30, 48 and 49 for Rozee. Quite frankly I'd rather just have Polec, let alone Polec and the rest of that stuff.

I described our 3 picks as "unsexy" in perhaps the coldest take in my bigfooty career, which is quite a high bar to clear.

I think I just wanted us to draft talls at the time.

Amazing take here....

lol Hately has no strengths, he is a vanilla player who will eventually get pushed out of every position he plays ala Ebert or Moore.

Wtf was I thinking?
This could still happen... so you arent wrong yet:

So by 2028, Rozee, Butters and Duursma will be elsewhere and Wingard will still be playing for Hawthorn with 3 premiership medals around the very neck that a Hawthorn captain tried to break.

Amazing take here....
Hately got destroyed by going to GWS, the Crows thought they could bring out what he promised, but their development program when he joined was even worse. Then he got injured.

Hard to harshly judge him after having Cameron and Nicks as his coaches.

Thank God we got Butters instead thoigh!
