I suppose some of these long deals, many of which we have questioned the length of, are either at reduced rates, or heavily front or back ended.

I agree, and I know you're not arguing against this but my god the Brayshaw deal is still so bad (And I didn't like 3 years for ANB either).

5+ year deals should only be for absolutely elite talent, I was fine with the Petracca/Oliver contracts. Brayshaw is a B grader at best and now we can never move him without taking a massive hit.

Imagine the pitch the Ben King if we wanted him: "come to Melbourne Ben, we"ll crowd our own F50 and bomb kicks on or over your head, have you competing for pack marks against JVR, Gawn and Grundy and 6 opposition defenders. We kick 8-10 goals a game against proper clubs, you could kick 1 goal a week. How good does that sound?"

You left out making him kick from the boundary pocket more often than not .

“Come to Melbourne Ben. Prior to the past six weeks when we’ve inexplicably decided not to support a 20yo 11game KPF with an experienced supporting key tall, we were actually one of the highest scoring teams in the competition. Same in 2022 and same the previous year when we won the flag with scintillating quick ball movement and a dangerous combination of key talls and smalls. With TMac and BBB entering their final year, we want you to lead the line in 2024 with support from a young JVR and the aforementioned veterans. Come and compete for a flag over the next 3-4 seasons with one of the best midfield groups in the comp, two superstar ruckmen and a premiership quality backline. Sound good?”

The list needs a bit of a shakeup sooner rather than later.

In 2019, West Coast had one of the strongest lists/squads in the comp. Their backline had arguably the best two KPDs in the game in McGovern and Barrass with great support from Sheppard and Hurn. The midfield was stacked with Yeo, Shuey, Sheed and Gaff with the jungle drums beating that Tim Kelly would be joining them at year’s end. The forward mix was also excellent with the KPFs of Kennedy, Darling and the smaller options of Ryan, Rioli and Cripps. They had ruck depth with Naitanui, Hickey and Vardy on the books as well as developing youngsters like Oscar Allen, Jake Waterman, Jarred Brander, Josh Rotham, Tom Cole and Daniel Venables around the fringes. At the time, you would have thought they were a monty to at least make another prelim.

4 years later, age + inertia has seen them collapse into one of the worst teams in living memory. Not saying we’ll necessarily be as bad as West Coast but if we don’t add some more quality to this list we could easily plummet back down to the bowels of the ladder relatively quickly.

So we should go to the draft rather than throw our 1st round picks away at established player(s)?

Depends who's available and what the club's goals are. If they 100% believe we can win the flag next year they'd be stupid not to look at some trades. I'm not convinced, teams that win a flag and then don't back up within 2 years rarely win another. Other teams are improving at a rapid rate and our list seems to be in decline already

I think having quality kids coming through is essential and your best chance of that is through early draft picks. But, it also depends on who’s available or could be cajoled across. Funny things can happen in trade period. If Zak Butters got the shits with Port, we’d be mad to not try to add that sort of talent to our midfield.

I also think we need a May replacement so if the Eagles were dangling someone like Tom Barrass for a top 10 pick, you’d have to think about it.

Brisbane finished a pretty distant 4th last year but were able to improve their list with Ashcroft, Dunkley, Fletcher, Gunston and McKenna. It obviously helps to have quality FS but a good offseason can be pretty transformative.

Spot on - and the biggest lesson for us is that just because someone is a premiership player - even a star player in a premiership year, doesn't guarantee you're going to want them on the list in 3-5 years time.

Eagles would be kicking themselves for not letting Gaff move on for a big return a few years back and for keeping all of Shuey, Sheed, Hurn, Cripps for at least a year too long.

They're fortunate that they're in a position to get three first rounders for pick no.1 this year so they'll have the chance to reset quickly.

This forwardline isn't winning a flag. Changes have to be made in the off-season. Brown, TMac, Melk all need to go and be replaced. But who is out there that will be available? Finlayson was a great get by Port. Smart forward, Hits the scoreboard, competes. If we're locked in with Petty in defence, then our F50 is barren. Riccardi is a name being thrown around. Naughton, McKay too expensive and most likely out of reach. So who else is out there?

I don't think we should panic, cut those three and Schache. Hope Jefferson comes on and draft another key forward this year. If JVR comes on again as we all expect he will then we really only need one other proper tall forward in a support role. Don't have to be a star who averages 3 goals a game, just sSomeone who isn't a slow lumbering veteran, or a flanker or a resting ruckman.

Any state league full forwards who are kicking lots of goals? A late pick on someone who fits that bill would be a decent back up plan.

Can’t cut all of them and Scache. All but Melk are contracted for next year, at best I’d say TMac and brown get handshakes and walk out the door whilst Melk retires.

Tmac, Brown and Melk are all near certainties to retire unless they’re completely delusional. None of them have any prospect of getting a game in 2024.

All you have to do is make Schache realise he’s in the same boat and offer him a coaching/development job if need be.

None of those 4 have any onfield value in 2024 (arguably don’t in 2023). We need the 4 list spots.

Nate Caddy looks good, not a tall forward at 193cm but seems to be a good mark and pretty athletic, Looks like he may go in the top few on draft night now though.

Not entirely sure if you're taking the piss or not..

I hope we trade our FF1 and 2023 Freo pick to take Caddy key forward and Curtain Key back.

Book ends for 12 years sorted and May replacement sorted. Old mate recruit Adams from last year isn’t setting the world on fire in VFL.

Use our pair of second rounders and other miscellaneous currency to try tempt Finn Callahan back to melb to play with his mate Howes and straight into the midfield.

Piss off Laurie, Tmac, Melksham, Tomlinson for a 4th rounder which we can use on Kynan Brown

Why would Brown or TMac retire when they’re both contracted for 2024? Would you walk away from a guaranteed $500k to play AFL footy? No, I wouldn’t either.

Contract status according to Footywire.
Dunstan, Hibberd, Jordon, Melksham, Moniz-Wakefield, D Smith, K Turner and Woey Jnr all OOC this year. Wouldn’t be in a rush to sign up any of them although I suspect the outcome would be Hibberd, K Turner and Woey Jnr all get at least one year extension. I doubt that any of the others will have a list spot next year.

We should look to make some moves on some of the 2024 contracted players too. Brown, Harmes, Laurie, McDonald, Schache and Tomlinson looks like a lot of clog on the list in 12 months time. Not saying that all will go but the dreamboat scenario would be getting Brown and T Mac off the books and securing trades for Harmes and Tomlinson.

I’d also think about trading Salem. Unlike some, I’m a fan but we might be able to extract some value for him and with Bowey, Brayshaw, Rivers and McVee - we have plenty of cover across half back for him.
