Suns also have Jed Walter coming through in the draft this year.
Chol is kind of out of favour now.

I’d take Chol for sure as a third tall option if that’s on the table. Feel like he might want to go somewhere that he’s a guaranteed start though, which wouldn’t be the case here either.

Side note, Walter looks to be the real deal. Twomey reckons if he was in the open draft, some clubs would take him over Reid - which is nuts given the media narrative the past 12 months. Man is absolutely jacked for an 18 year old

Thoughts on Jack Silvagni? I think he could play the Mcstay role and come cheaply. I think he offers more than Gunstan has shown and would offer that bit break glass in emergency ruckman that Mcstay did. If we play Oscar and Joe having another that can ruck in a pinch is useful. I dont like a ruckman as sub.

I am a Fort fan, don't get me wrong. If we go a one ruck setup with Joe doing a few minutes we can be exposed with an in game injury to big Oscar.

I would take Silvagni if Jack Gunston decided to retire otherwise the cost to the salary cap may be just too much.

If we can trade back into late first/early second round in this years draft and add Doedee through free agency I am quite happy with how we are continuing to replenish our list with experienced acquisitions that fill a best 22 need whilst adding quality youth. Particularly with Levi Ashcroft coming next year as well.

I think we will be fine with Rich, Zorko and Gunston moving on. In another few years it will be incredibly difficult to replace Neale, Charlie and Joe but we have a few years to target free agency/trade ins and hit the draft to find some quality replacements. The rest of our list is primed for a while yet.

I still think we should Chase McKay from North and Allow Andrews to play 3rd defender as good as Doedee is 2 knee injuries in less than 5 years not sure it’s something we should chase

If we are chasing Doedee, I assume he'd be quite affordable and likely why we'd look at him. If he's a low cost recruit, then the risk is significantly lower. The reward - a rebounding third fall defender - is still relatively high.

McKay is very overrated.

He can't move out of Melbourne.
It'll be impossible to maintain the double act from 2 different cities.

True, and I'm sure in a different team he'd be a lot better. But I'm not sure he's a 750k/yr or more player which is what I think he'll get.
Don't disagree, but when you think Logue is on not much less, seems 700 to 750 is probably for McKay. Not that I am a fan of King but he gave both of them a serious spray last night on 'first crack'

Can’t perform well as a key defender in a team as s**t as Norf. Makes it awfully hard.

Exactly. It’s like saying Harris played terribly last year when really it was the midfield/forward line’s lack of pressure that were the reason he had to defend so much in the first place.

I like the idea of Doedee but if I was to go after anyone it would be Esava.
Personally I think we are chasing a genuine third tall rather than another hulking key back.
So Doedee over Esava for me.

I don't mind Mitch Georgiades as a 3rd tall forward option, OOC this year.

I still think my primo selection would be Harry Himmelberg.
Would be one of the most expensive dollars wise but is a free agent and is the most versatile of the lot.
Think I heard he has been offered $700k/y to stay at GWS. Not sure of the length.

Yes, Harry would definitely be my preferred option, he can play at either end of the ground as well.

So for those who understand these things why are the Lions being so slow to sign up any of our uncontracted players this year - or is this just a normal time-line?

2023:
Harry Sharp
Marcus Adams
Rhys Mathieson (R)
Kai Lohmann
Callum Ah Chee (unconfirmed but likely)
Daniel Rich
Nakia Cockatoo (R)
James Madden
Deven Robertson
Dayne Zorko
Blake Coleman
Carter Michael (R)
Darryl McDowell-White jnr (R)
Ryan Lester (R)
Tom Fullarton
Conor McKenna (R)
Shadeau Brain (R)
Darragh Joyce (R)

More to do with the quality/timeline of those guys. None are walk-up starts in our best 22 so there's reasons for either the club or the player (or both) to wait and see what develops and what options they have:
  • Harry Sharp - can't crack seniors consistently
  • Marcus Adams - 😭
  • Rhys Mathieson (R) - delistee?
  • Kai Lohmann - can't crack seniors consistently
  • Callum Ah Chee - can't crack seniors consistently
  • Daniel Rich - age
  • Nakia Cockatoo (R) - delistee?
  • James Madden - can't crack seniors consistently
  • Deven Robertson - can't crack seniors consistently
  • Dayne Zorko - age
  • Blake Coleman - delistee?
  • Carter Michael (R) - rookie
  • Darryl McDowell-White jnr (R) - rookie
  • Ryan Lester (R) - age
  • Tom Fullarton - can't crack seniors consistently
  • Conor McKenna (R) - senior player
  • Shadeau Brain (R) - rookie
  • Darragh Joyce (R) - rookie
McKenna is the obvious exception to the list, but everyone else is either a rookie list player (generally a year at a time prospect anyway), on the tailend of their career and will probably re-sign if offered without too many worries once all is said and done, or in that vague area where they're good in the reserves but not cemented in the seniors - those guys often have differing ideas of contract value and are also vulnerable to poaching for more opportunities.

Some considered decisions need to be made, taking into consideration future F/S options, Academy players coming through, what is available in the free agency sphere, our maneuvering for draft capital and the age profile of our senior list. Also where and how we finish this year will have a significant bearing on how we approach our future list management options.

With our list management we have made some errors recently such as signing Lyons and Gardner on long term (3years) deals. Which in hindsight may impact on our list management post 2023.

I agree with the strategy of taking stock at the end of the year. Other than McKenna all the rest have a question mark if they remain or go.
