North need some leadership stability more than they need another high end pick. Are we just going to keep giving them picks each year because they’re going to be shithouse for a looooong time with their key position stocks

Yes. That’s exactly what’s happening. Won’t take them long until they slip straight past us though. AFL has no concept that picks just take a little a bit of time.

Key position players don’t matter that much. If their mids come through as expected then they’ll be seriously competitive in 2-3 years.

Here are the potential draft prospects around our first pick will likely fall and end of frd as free agent comp with an emphasis on Sandy Dragons players and Mids....as taken from Fox rankings.
Ryley Sanders Sandy D 186cm Mid pick 8
Nate Caddy Mid 192 cm Fwd pick 11
Ollie Murphy 200cm Def pick 12
Darcy Wilson Vic C 185cm wing pick 14
Clay Hall WA 188cm mid pick 23
George Stevens Vic C 189cm mid Def pick 24
Archie Roberts Sand D 182cm mid Def pick 27
Cooper Simpson mid 182cm pick 28
Joel Freijah 191 cm wing pick 29

So if we are clever and assume we do not trade for GCS and if we finish out of the 8 we are a chance to get Sanders if we finish in the 8 pick 11 likely get Caddy.
Wilson will be available so will Ollie Murphy if the other two are snapped up.
2 of the rest will be a good result.

Clay Hall would be a great get too, regional WA lad, son of a former Geelong player and a bit of a late bloomer. Good size, burst speed and skills.

Listening to Brady Rawlings on Gettable

Sounds like

  • Lock to get access to Saunders
  • Lock to get extra picks in an assistance package
  • Lock to lowball us for Clark and maybe Billings
Pardon the interruption, but… how on earth did you take away the final two points from that?

Can’t happen surely.
Season 3 Lock GIF by The Simpsons

Last year Hill was on Clarkson's wanted list and Hunter Clark was being looked at as well - could they both be gone next season and could we swap a player in the trade for Hill.

Just watch and see
It may well happen but howard and Gresham were mentioned not Clark or billings. I also didn’t get the impression that north were confident or had been promised anything. Maybe they will get assistance but I’m not sure how you can say anything’s a lock from watching that.

It‘s going to be a very interesting offseason and the afl have form around making things up as they go along. Imo north will get some assistance yet again but I don’t think Saunders will be gifted to them.

More about Richmond picking him as part of a deal, I think.
Anyway, as we well know, you can never have enough mids.
Out of contract players rarely, if ever these days, get packaged into a deal for a player the club they are leaving wants.

Flanders will get to the club of his choice in his own seperate deal. And maybe that's Richmond but needs wise, there are clubs he would suit better.

Access to Sanders is just a sham and we should totally lose our s**t on draft night .

North have not been involved in his development.
It does not help development of kids under special circumstances to "gift" them to clubs of the AFL's choosing as some sort of bullshit reward for being crap.

And the next pick is StKilda's ....selecting their pick is acting list manager, Saints September.
" &$# you Mgloglin.... what the $#& are you still doin here anyhow you were meant to retire....and the sooner the better in my book "
"you keep giving all the good players to other &^$# clubs an how the &$# are we supposed to give a &^#$ about your big &&^ing draffin night, when we can't get any players we want "
" Just give us any of those losers you want...makes no difference you're picking out where the good players go anyway ya knob headed pin ****ed peabrain, your shout SOS ".

Interesting that they've gone so far that clubs are starting to say that the first round should be un compromised and that includes father sons. The AFL have made the equalisation system so blatantly unfair that some clubs have made star lists for loose change. Dogs are up for another era of guns from FS and got pick 1 for free while sides like St Kilda and Freo get FA from it.

Why should Daicos go to Collingwood cheap just because of genetics. Poor clubs had all they talent poached so they never had the same access. Just generational inequality.

They wouldn't give Gold Coast picks but access to state leagues. Now they change the system again. They are so shit at running a basic competition.

Another downside to having unco players is that their kids are unco. Generational spuds.

They need to get rid of the discount (and add an extra loading for F/S and Academy players in the top 10) and make it that bids have to be matched with a pick in a certain range rather than with a bunch of late picks.

It's ridiculous that finalists can get generational talent for a bunch of picks in the 30s and 40s. If we can get to a point where a club decides to not match a bid for players in the first round because it's not longer a gift, our draft system will be in a much better place.

Larkey is a star tall forward. He's better than Max King at the moment. They have a bit of a patchy backline but Corr and Logue are solid if they can get fit and playing together. Comben will be a player too.

When you look through their list they don't look any worse than ours. Plenty of even older players, developing youth and really lack that absolute top shelf with only LDU looking like an absolute A grader so far. To me they will pass us in a couple of years. They have been tanking while we are going for wins and have got into a habit of losing. At some point weight of talent will shoot them up the ladder.

Also because of being so bad we sacked players before they hit 100 games. Guys like Bowie, Ralphsmith, Anderson would have made 100 games if we'd been a stable environment....and that was a good era compared to most of our history.

Disagree on Larkey being a star. He’s Drew Petrie 2.0 IMO. A real trier, gets on the end of a lot and is consistent but can’t see him ever becoming a star. Combden is a fringe player for them, wouldn’t get minutes for another side.

I agree they’ll pass us though, at some point we need to kick and scream that the system is broken.. but Ross and co know this, and it might be back to the well in a massive way at the end of the season

That’s more reasonable and, hopefully, better news for us.
As we sure need some.

The thing that annoys me about this North situation is the apparent disregard by the AFL of moral hazard.
North chose to do a hard rebuild.
It’s called that partly because it is a difficult process.
Now, after making that decision and finding it actually is really hard, they winge to the AFL and the AFL comes to the rescue.
Again.

We won't get anywhere bemoaning North and whatever compo they get. They've won 7 games in three years, if we go down the bottom and end up that bad then we'll get something I just pray it doesn't happen.

All it does is highlight that we need to be excellent in everything we do. Drafting, trading, training, coaching, development, leave no stone unturned and make every post a winner. That's the only way to step up from mid-tier (where we are now) to the top. Clean out the shit. We saw Collingwood do it and get success. Trade with purpose and intent. Stop burning picks, stop wasting money on average players.

Make every post a winner.

How ever you want to frame it he's a regular at the top end of the goal kicking ladder and looks to have stepped up again.

Would love someone to run the sums and see how many games Norf have won in the last decade compared to us. No free hit for McKenzie for us or any package coming our way despite losing a #1 pick for nothing.

Unbelievable.
Last 10 years:
Saints 88 wins
North 78 wins

We won’t get assistance for being mediocre for a decade,
While north played in prelims 9 years ago
But they have tanked to the bottom of the barrel:

Last 4 years:
Saints 42 wins
North 11 wins

We have 11 this year.
