So where we’re at is if the afl don’t give us better assistance,
there is the equal chance we have the same bottom two year like these past four seasons.
With that comes lack of numbers to games, tv ratings, memberships and sponsorship issues.
If they sit on it and think yeah keep going with your natural development, they would be basing their decision on just a ‘hunch’ or a feel. Nothing else.
Then there is also so possibility of more exits such as players, staff etc.

We saw that the tucker and logue (while we rate him) really did sweet fck all to our seasons trajectory or improvement.

So, what happens next is going to be fascinating. Do the afl want to get it wrong again? And do they want to be shown that they help teams who were in less turmoil?

Does Laura Kane want to start her career with a law suit against the afl concerning the Hawthorn saga? 😱
So many questions

We should ask AFL house for a decent draw (in reasonable time slots) and a fair go from the umpires. That would make a bigger difference than whatever shitty compo they’re going to hand out.
‘So let me make sure I am understanding this clearly..

Your only requests are, no to umpire Eleni officiating your games. And that your home matches are to be scheduled at 1:10pm on Saturday’s at Marvel… so you can get home earlier and enjoy the rest of your weekend?’

‘Yes, commissioner. There isn’t a whole lot of time to pep our members up going into a working week after coming off a disappointing Sunday…’

There’s a few more than Just Eleni, but in essence, yes!

Not a bad idea. Ask them for a few Friday nights. They’ll be flustered and give us 3 first round picks and double our soft cap.

I don't think we need assistance, and it was too late in coming imo. I think they need to "help" clubs a lot earlier than they do and I don't mean the current farcical system where they give a shitload of assistance to some and **** all to others. I think it should be really hard to stay in the top 8 for successive years and unfortunately it is pretty easy for many clubs to remain entrenched there for a long time due to how long it takes to improve a side via the draft.

There should be a lot more prize money and prestige in making the to 8, but there should be far greater allocation of resources to improve to those outside of the top 8. The distribution is too even to allow for change to come quick enough. There are also things like father son, prelisting academies, etc. Just looking at the last few drafts Brisbane got Ashcroft and Fletcher at 2 and 12, they probably would have gone higher if they were available. Daicos and Darcy the year before, JUH and Campbell the year before that, that is a lot of top 5 picks going to finalists in three years. That is making it harder for weaker clubs to make ground on the better teams. Then there is the attraction to go to a more successful club via trading and free agency. They have diluted the impact of the draft, it takes a lot longer to rebuild. If you suck at trading and free agency then you it is going to be an even longer rebuild.

We improved a lot this year, I know it doesn't seem obvious given we only won 3 games, but we had a lower average losing margin than Essendon did and they were on the verge of playing finals. Thomas only played 12 games and he came back out of shape, his second half of his games once he got match fit was good. LDU only played 14 games, Wardlaw 8, Xerri 9, Comben 7, Bergman 12, Goater 10, etc.

I think the biggest challenge for us in the short-term has been managing existing players. This year Hall, Cunners, Ziebell where kind of dead weight, a midfield of Simpkin, Cunners and Greenwood is going to cause us issues when the ball gets out of stoppages, we looked better the more of the old guard missed due to injury. Jy has lacked effectiveness in the middle this year, McDonald the same down back, Zurhaar has been used to put out spotfires and we didn't get the most out of his strengths.

A lot didn't go to plan. Especially with the coach.

Another issue has been our lack of ability to bring in serviceable recycled players. We brought in CCJ, Corr, Bonar and Stephenson into our list without AFL assistance and only one of those players are in our best 18 and Corr is in it only because we have had minimal drafting of KPPs for some time. By comparison, Collingwood has traded in a lot of B-Graders, but B-Graders who can play and play consistently and that is what you need to get batter, you need players who can play good consistent footy and we don't have a lot of players who tick that box.

We have two major problems, we are shit with the ball in hand and we are shit defensively around the ground. This is the worst combo. You can be shit with the ball and be very good defensively, ie a Lyon type of team and we would be a lot better than we are. If you don't apply a lot of pressure and you constantly turn over the ball then you aren't going to win many games. Recruiting 30 people who aren't going to constantly turn the ball over is going to take time.

This is fundamentally why the teams that have shot up the ladder have done so applying a lot of pressure and improving defensively.

I think if we pivot and play a much stronger defensive style of football, we will get a significant on-field boost. It is great getting top 5 pick talent but we need a lot more Curtis, Bergman, Ford and Goater type of pickups where they can come in and play solid football and show some class but a relatively cheap acquisition. It will just take too long trying to rebuild a side with mostly early first round draft picks.

All definitely well targeted points.

I guess in short do you think we just try and drag ourselves out of it?
Based on the on-field display you can quite clearly see we’re not ‘always’ playing like the bottom team, which may perhaps warrant no assistance.

But with Clarkson saying we need to put our hand out, it may seem like the club wants to really try and capitalise on getting out of the bottom with as much assistance as possible.

I think we should try and get every advantage we can.

We should plan/assume we get nothing, if we get anything then it is a bonus.

Clarkson is just playing the game, he is right in that GC has been handed ridiculous levels of on-field support.

Interesting thoughts there well done. Perhaps bottom 4 get and an extra second rounder and the rest that dont make finals get a 3rd rounder. Gives those bottom clubs extra picks or trade capital to raid top teams and applying addition cap pressure on them.
That and a fair fixture and time slots would make a huge difference.
Btw i fully agree we aren't as far off as people think

The potential early pick as part of an assistance package might cause a dilemma. Suppose we do get it, and then suppose McKay goes for a truck-load triggering band 1 as expected. Along with our natural pick 2, we'd have 3 as the PP, but the McKay compo ought to be pick 3 (it would be if not for the PP).

So, does that mean we get picks 2, 3 and 4, or do we get pick 2 and two pick 3s?

Those possibilities are confusing the heck out of me.

Yeah, there's no way the AFL gives us an early priority pick if there's the potential for McKay band 1 compo. Us having picks 2, 3 and 4 would give everyone conniptions.

It's why the "FA compo and priority picks are totally unrelated!" crew are technically correct, but very naive.

All nga players should go in their own draft with with bottom side getting pick 1
Any players not selected go then go in the main draft.
Will help bottom sides get two for one
If exclude gws/GC nga players for now - due to no F/s

Can you mock up an example mate?

The way I read it, the main outcome from that would be to get more NGA players drafted by everyone.

talking out my ar$e but what if the say the top 2 sides each year had to forgo their first round pick , which was then given as a priority picks to assist the 2 bottom placed sides . (the top 2 sides being the grand finalists ). Every year

so receive end of first round pick when your side's crap , but giving it out when you're playing for a flag

Im sure theres reasons why it could create some issues but it would make it harder for clubs to stay at the top and easier for clubs to rebuild
Obviously you'd have to be careful of tanking, but as they are end of first round picks there's not the same incentive

I wouldn't mind the top 8 taken right out of the first round and each club gets 2 picks, then the bottom 10 taken out of the 2nd round for 2 picks.

So finish last get picks 1, 11, 37
Finish 8th get picks 21, 29, 47
Finish 1st get 28, 36, 54

Allows talent for all but enhances top talent and trade options for those outside of finals.
