Re: Pavlich - What would You Give Up For Him?

Heres a bit of an idea.

Last year for Chris Tarrant and pick 42 (basically nothing), Fremantle gave up pick 13 + medhurst + polak (for pick 8 from richmond).

Pavlich is the next tier up from Tarrant so, if Freo gave up that for Tarrant, they would be asking for more in return for Pav.

Re: Pavlich - What would You Give Up For Him?

Bottom line is, that if he chooses Adelaide a trade that satisfies all parties can be reached, if you are prepared to pay for what you are getting. If you are hoping to get him for 70 cents of the dollar then you are really mucking about. If you are prepared to pay the $1, then you will have him.

Of course Freo will come in and ask for $1.50 knowing well that no team can meet that demand but they will settle for the $1.

2 first rounders and a good player is not too much to pay for a player of Pavs quality. If we are not prepared to do that, then I have a great concern about the capacity of people in charge to lead us to holly grail.

I think thats what will be happening if it does, Our first pick, the pick we get for messen and whatever else (maybe scott stevens ? KG and Cornesy reckon he is a WA lad ?)

I think it will likely be something like 2 first round picks and a van Berlo or Griffin!

And I would still do it!

Re: Pavlich - What would You Give Up For Him?

Two first round draft picks (one preferably in top 5 and certainly in top 10) and a good player.

We might be able to trade someone like Meesen and our 2nd round pick to St. Kilda for their first rounder.

Then send St. Kilda's 1st rounder, our 1st rounder and a good player to Freo. Who that player is, well thats debatable. It could be someone like van Berlo or Griffin or Stevens or Bock etc...

But I think that would be somewhere in the ball park and anyone else thinking of getting him for any lesser offer than that is kidding themselves.

EDIT: come to think of it, Freo might very well like someone like Mattner. His hard running and penetrating style would be suited well to subiaco.

Spot on.

This would give us the opportunity to closely look at and be in a position to draft the likes of Masten, Palmer, Morton etc..

Re: Pavlich - What would You Give Up For Him?

John Meesen and Marty Mattner to a Victorian club for a first and third round pick (top 10 & around the 35th pick) and our first pick in the national draft (11 – 16) & to Fremantle for Mathew Pavlich.

But I doubt that will satisfy Fremantle and they will continue to hold off until late on the Friday afternoon and no deal will get done – Pavlich will be a Docker in 2008.

Why Mattner??

He's South Australian. Sure he doesn't want to Victoria and he still has a year left on his contract.

This was along the lines of what I was thinking - but I reckon 2 1st rounders might be enough without adding the extra player. It will depend on how hell bent Pav is to come to the Crows. If he is luke warm or isn't fussed between us and the Pt Powers, then it might require that extra player to get our noses in front - but if he comes out and says "trade me to the Crows and no-one else".......the lesser deal might clinch it.

Re: Pavlich - What would You Give Up For Him?

Of course Pavlich is worth a lot. He is a gun player. But all of the talk that Fremantle will play "hard ball" is wrong. They will do whatever they can to get as much as they can from the Crows. But take note of the word can - sometimes, you can only get so much in return, even for someone like Pavlich.

Fremantle's hands are tide in this situation. If Pavlich wants to leave, then he wants to leave. It's very hard to stop a player from returning home when he has decided to do so. So they could have Pavlich on their list, but who doesn't really want to be there, who will ultimately leave the club anyway. The notion that "if Fremantle don't get enough for him then he will be a Docker in 2008" is a stretch. I can't remember a club who kept a player on their list out of 'spite' who they knew didn't want to be there, and knew ultimately that he would return home. Fremantle will play hard early, but they know that they won't get the likes of 3 first round picks for him.

Ultimately, it will come down to whether Pav wants to play for the Crows more then Fremantle. The issue isn't what the Crows will offer - an offer of 2 first round picks plus Jon Griffin would, realistically, be enough. The issue is Pav's mindset.

Re: Pavlich - What would You Give Up For Him?

I think it would take 1 of Group A, 1 of Group B and a draft pick to ensure Freo would get at least one of these young gun WA players from the U/18's.

Group A: Thompson, Van Berlo, Knights, Rutten, Reilly
Group B: Johncock, Mattner, Stevens, Bock, McGregor, Griffen, Maric, Meesen, Douglas

The rest I don't think Freo would want/need or they would be Crows players who the club wouldn't trade because of their service (i.e. Edwards, McLeod, Goodwin etc.)

Any of those in bold I'd reluctantly give up for Pavlich.

Craigy's Interview On Pavlich.

Just watched Neil Craig on 10, and his thoughts on luring Pavlich to West Lakes.

If you read between the lines, he is " almost " writing the whole thing off. Or is he just bluffing at this stage, to keep behind closed doors how hard the Crows actually are trying.

He more or less said, the Crows will not give up any quality to get Pavlich. Which is what they'll have to do to get him.

Craigy being a very good diplomat, usually doesn't give too much away.

It's either a write off, or there's something cooking big time.

Re: Craigy's Interview On Pavlich.

Craig has been very vocal about his dislike for trading players in the past.
Unlikely that he'll support it unless Freo are happy with only draft picks or if one of our lads wants to go back to WA.

Interesting !

The reason i posted this, was because mark Williams has more or less made no bones about trying to get Pavlich to Port.

I know this is another of many Pavlich threads, but it's interesting to hear the coaches thoughts and words on the very subject.

In all reality, i dont think the clubs should be spending too much time and energy on the whole thing, and concentrate on next weekend, on the park.

Leaving it all to the behind the scenes experts.

Re: Craigy's Interview On Pavlich.

Interesting about future draft picks being traded. If we could get 2 x 1st roudners for this year plus one for next year we would be in business i think. Personally would rather picks than players. Doubt it will be an issue either way,

why would you rather draft picks than a player or 2??

Build for the future, look at it this way without him we ain't gonna win a flag in the next 3-4 years so it is better to get our own kids from the draft and develop them. Its something we have never really done before and i think the time has come to do it.
WOuld rather keep him though.

Re: Craigy's Interview On Pavlich.

Craigy has almost written off trading anyone of quality. So Fremantle wont be getting what they wanted anyway. A couple of good draft picks may get the job done ?

By a couple of draft picks i assume you mean two x top 5 picks?
