"Blatant manipulation" says coach of Jack Bowes...
There's a massive difference in a lopsided trade and picks being pulled out of thin air.

Every club could trade for Bowes only North gets PP. Conflating the 2 is borderline insane.

Both are bad. They can't take advantage of some parts and complain about others. Hypocritical.
It's not at all hypocritical. They traded cap space for a pick, every club that could afford to would do that deal. No different to the Dogs getting Treloar for chips.

Priority picks and compo push every clubs picks back. No other team was affected by the Cats doing that trade.

The reigning premiers literally purchased a top 10 pick. Weird you're ok with that but not priority picks for rubbish teams.

Exactly. We could have done the same if we weren't dumb with our salary cap.

From memory our assistance was the mini draft pick which we used on Hogan and the pick 3 compo for Frawley. Staggering what clubs are getting nowadays.
Yeah and the mini pick was for losing Scully. Which actually didn't get any free assistance picks in that era. Although could argue the AFL were verrrrry lenient on us for the tanking saga. Could have killed us

Because they are totally seperate issues.

Yeah it's annoying Geelong could do that but it's not manipulation. A premiership team having enough cap space to do that deal shows how well run that club is. How is it any different to a team getting a good player cheap because they're on an inflated contract?

The cap space isn't the issue, good on them, the issue is literally purchasing draft picks - In no way should that have been allowed.

So 2019 we finish 17th and the AFL gives GC pick 2 (Noah Anderson) pushing our pick back, we take Jackson instead and now that he's been traded our pick for him is going to be pushed back two spots because of FA compo and a GC academy pick, taking us out of the elite end of the draft. Wonderful system we have.

Was thinking about this too (although we still likely have pick 6 because GC pick 4 effectively becomes pick 2 meaning no effect on our pick - thank Christ, Freo didn’t finish 3rd or 4th last though). The issue is the lack of transparency and explanation to the footy public. A case can be made for North getting assistance given how awful they’ve been over the past 4 seasons same as Gold Coast getting pick 2 four years ago (they’d been very shit and had terrible player retention issues). However, the AFL pretends that they aren’t doing that and acts as though the system is just. What’s to stop West Coast seeking similar compo next year if they have another terrible season?

Gold Coast are going to trade pick 4 though. North basically the best placed to trade for it too.

Just getting sick of how compromised the draft has become. The AFL just keeps adding shit to what was once a close to pure system. Priority picks, compensation picks, academy players and father-sons. It's gotten out of control. The academies are the worst of it. Jed Walter grew up in Perth and was playing footy as a 9 year old. Gold Coast just pluck the talented kids out of existing programs and get him for free on the basis that they're growing the game. Two more top ten players on top of that and a host of highly talented players to come over the next few years. It's only getting worse.

the North picks get reviewed after each season though. So if they do well then their remaining assistance picks will get scrapped.
Don't know how that works if they trade it.

Any sort of success they have just gonna be tainted now anyway.

Chris Scott and Ross Lyon are totally right. The leg up for a club who have dug their own hole is ridiculous. Undermines the whole integrity of the competition. The AFL just refer to bums on seats saying the game is more popular than ever, but the kids are watching basketball and Netflix now and incompetent s* like this just pushes more hardcore fans into casual fans. I barely watch any other games these days other than ours. Just losing interest with all the woke BS and the AFL making s* up on the spot like this. Norf should have been shipped off to Tassie years ago.

Surely they can’t trade the picks that are subject to ‘review’?
If they couldn't then why even bother giving them to them this year? Just say the AFL reserves the right to award those picks to them next year subject to performance.

North are as well positioned as any team that's received priority picks. I'd be taking their list over West Coast, Essendon, Saints, Hawks and maybe even Freo and Adelaide. As Chris Scott said, the worst thing you can be is mediocre because then you get nothing.

Gold Coast the other team that has gotten massive draft assistance in recent time are also incredibly well set up for their future.
