To be fair to Matt R he did pretty well in that years rookie draft...Rory Laird.
Just had a check on Nick Joyce. I couldn't recall him playing any senior football for WWT. Apparently, he played 10 matches. Scored 2g 2 b in those 10 matches. I think the rules back then forced clubs to play these players.

He needed both shoulders reconstructed at age 20. Pretty sure he gave up footy completely and got into photography.

With talk - yet again - of the Brownlow being a midfielders medal, I thought I’d knock out the following for a bit of fun. Two teams based purely on the AFL player rankings. One, the top 18 mids in the country. The other, the best of the rest. That is, the top ranked key forwards & backs, general forwards & backs, along with the top ranked ruck too…

Here’s how they line up:

Mids Team

FB: Z. Merrett, N. Anderson, J. Newcombe,

HB: J. Sinclair, P. Cripps, C. Serong

C: Z. Butters, T. Liberatore, N. Daicos

HF: C. Warner, J. De Goey, C. Rozee

FF: S. Bolton, C. Petracca, E. Gulden

Ruck: M. Bontempelli, L. Neale, C. Oliver

The Rest

FB: T. Stewart, D. Moore, B. Dale

HB: J. Sicily, H. Andrews, D. Houston,

C: N. Blakey, Z. Bailey, I. Rankine

HF: D. Martin, J. Cameron, C. Cameron

F: T Greene, T. Walker, C. Curnow

Ruck: M. Gawn, J. Dawson, I. Heeney

Who wins and why? Does this say anything at all about the worth of mids compared to other types of player?

Absolutely sickening how North get gifted all these picks due to awful list management.

But will be gifted a top pick for McKay who’s managed 71 games since 2016 because he’s a North player, if he was playing for any other team it’ll be a second or third round pick

Band one compensation should be fixed at Pick 11, irrelevant of your finishing position.

Cripps get 3 votes for a sub 20 possession game - carry on

Neale gets 3 votes for a sub 20 possession game - it's rigged

QLD player wins Brownlow after a few iffy calls = "Decision MUST be removed from umpires! Umpires MUST be allowed to look at stats!"

Victorian club gets unfair home advantage on Grand Final day = "Traditionz!!!1"

West Coast made finals 3 years ago, they’d need to be s**t again next year to ask for some compo

Fair point - But Collingwood made a GF in 2003 then got a Priority pick in 2005. Hawks payed in a Pre lim in 2001 and got PPs in 2004.

Norf ALREADY got PP's last year. The whole system stinks.

After winning 5 games in 2 years, When do WC get one? When the VFL feel like it?

Had to laugh at Gills defence yesterday, all clubs have benefited, bullshit

Ignoring Carey off field indiscretions, I enjoyed his comments, not so much commentary per se, just his insights and views.

Danger would be similar too, problem with Danger is that his ego bigger than even the game.

Richo comes across as that "slow kid" at school at times.

Welll, he is.....leave it Pugsley 😉

They changed the rules around PP 10-12 years ago that benefited Carlton, Collingwood, Hawthorn, Richmond, WC previously

WC will probably be able to present a case next year though if they're still stuck down the bottom

Edit: went and had look, Fremantle, Melbourne, St Kilda and WB all benefitted from PP. Rance was also a priority pick, though not listed below. I think he was an end of 1st round

Laughed at his criticism of Chris Scott, saying Geelong have benefited from father-son so he should jog on

At least its the same rule for all clubs for f/s and we know the rules.

So what are the rules for North's handouts, and how do we get them? Should we have got them for 2020 & 2021?

Dawson not a mid?

When you combine priority picks, list build concessions, priority father son access and exclusive academy access, the Crows have benefitted the least of any team in the AFL by far.

Zero priority picks
Zero academy players
One high end father son

That's it

So 5 of the 8 non Vic clubs haven't received a first rounder PP
But 9 of the 10 Vic clubs have. And 7 of those it was pick 1
And people think the AFL isn't biased. Imagine getting pick 1 for free

What about Walker, Brown and Crouch? Weren't they special sauces?

Walker was NSW academy, Brown and Crouch were something else

A lot of the Victorian clubs heavily benefitted from the early 2000s policy of handing out start of first round picks for winning under a certain amount of games. At the time, non-Victorian clubs were powerful (Brisbane, Port Adelaide, Adelaide, West Coast, Sydney all regular finalists)

When the tide started to turn and clubs like Brisbane, Port Adelaide, Adelaide and West Coast begun to fall down the ladder, the AFL wound back the first round priority pick system. The last one was handed out in 2009. In 2010 they instead started handing out list concessions to Gold Coast and GWS. They never reintroduced the priority pick system.

The clubs that suffered, were the rules similar to 2004?

Gold Coast eligible 2011, 2012, 2015, 2018, 2019
North Melbourne eligible 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023
West Coast eligible 2010, 2022, 2023
Brisbane eligible 2011, 2015, 2016

St Kilda eligible 2014, 2018
GWS eligible 2012, 2013
Carlton eligible 2015, 2018
Adelaide eligible 2020
Port Adelaide eligible 2011
Essendon eligible 2016
Fremantle eligible 2016

Collingwood, Geelong, Hawthorn, Richmond, Sydney, Western Bulldogs not eligible
