Ginni was getting high (no pun intended) when needed in previous finals and I think he’s better 1v1 and more creative than Noble.

If it’s a case of ginni vs noble for sub - it’s line ball
Noble offers run and allows someone like Maynard to move into the middle for fresh legs late in the game on a hot day
Vice versa Ginni allowing McReery or hill to move more into the middle
I think the incumbent ginni is more likely to get a look in
Whoever it is that is picked I hope the change is made at 3qtr time.
Anticipating some tired legs late in the game

Literally no one else on the list of 44 that can instantly drag the crowd into the game by merely coming onto the field
He's dangerous, clever and makes opposition nervous. If they were to drop him it would be a grievous mistake.
For those lucky enough to attend, was there anything notable at training, other than Frampton in black and training with the forwards?
Any notable absences? Which of Noble and Ginni finished the session wearing black? Anything else catch the eye?

Ginni was in black, JFN was in white. Doesn’t really mean too much as it’s never that concrete

Ginni, Noble, Crisp and Murphy started in white, and all of those bar Noble switched to black later. Seemed illustrative.

Final ( 
) session for the whole squad for 2023. A few of these players won't be around come november, so a bit bittersweet.
The boys did a lap around the over to the fans as a group before getting into the footy aspect of the session.
A lot of past players were present. I saw Rocca on the way to the shop before training got started, I wanted to buy one of the new GF t-shirts before they sold out again.
Crowd was building when I arrived, when the session actually started, it was really insane. Reckon about 5k there, or more during the course of the session.
Once they came out, it was in blacks and whites.

Johnson was out but did some running only.
Nick was away from the main group for the earlier part of the session, getting some conditioning in, before he joined the group for the match play part of the morning.
Did some stoppage work, where play goes out for a stoppage and then moving the way toward the F50. They did some pressure drills for each group. They split off into Blacks and whites for this. Bih focus on pressuring the opposition and tackling. There was one play where Noble was able to split the battle of every player and run through to the other end. Good on him, but geez the coaches wouldn't have liked that from those defending him.
Bit of extra ball movement, and the general fundamental drills they do each week, focusing on kicking to targets.
Match play; Lippa lined up on the wing after he started on the "bench" Ginni was started on the bench, which explains why I couldn't locate him at first. Both were in black. Noble was in white, so I think we can guess who the sub will be out of the two. Or will it be Lippa?
Now confirmed that Lippa will be sub. Meaning Ginni will be starting.
Really good vibes. Lets go and win this thing..

Portraiture of today's training.
Before eight this morning there was a fresh chill in the air and it was grey overhead. Once the billowy cloud was complemented by generous traces of blue, it warmed up and by the time the players entered the arena it was bathed in radiant sunshine. Grand Final day will also be propitious, albeit considerably warmer.
Black tie security guards surveilled the oval and engaged merrily with the crowd who were patiently waiting for their heroes. Quite a few took the opportunity to showcase their dubious kicking and marking skills, as eager fathers tried to coax any dormant traces of talent from their offspring. The crowd thronging the fence progressively swelled and the press of people was palpable for those of us among it. Music piped out from strategically placed speakers and an Master of Ceremonies endeavoured to stir up the crowd by encouraging Mexican waves which were to be accompanied by noises of affirmation for the cause. A mascot entertained the smallest Magpies, while staff handed out an assortment of goodies, including lollies and three different posters of this year’s playing group. When the microphone was placed in front of the kids, they invariably identified one of the Daicos brothers as their favourite player. The announcer said that post training the GF team would continue to train and work on its strategy away from the voyeuristic eyes outside the pavilion.
Eventually the players emerged to the delight of the teeming mass abutting the playing arena. Mitchell was the first to appear and he started warming up with gusto. Crisp then as is customary, conducted his own limbering up routine as he moved towards the outer side sharpening his lateral agility. He and Murphy were sporting the white guernsey which was worn by those VFL regulars who failed to make the final cut. All seemed to be there and Ash Johnson wearing a black top also joined in part of the running with the white clad charges.
The rest of the squad immediately gravitated towards the mini-hurdles and many chose to jump over these obstacles, some looking very focussed, including pumping their arms in the air, as they applied themselves to the task. Some worked with staff who allowed them to practise their ground balls with the pounding of the ball to the turf facilitating this. Some focussed on forward kicks to work their muscle groups.
Therein followed some desultory kicking between mates as players waited the long whistle which signals the official beginning of training proper.
The group listened to instructions as they assembled on the glasshouse side and the MC implored the crowd to make plenty of noise as the whole cohort ran a lap which hasn’t occurred at any time this year. This was obviously geared towards allowing the spectators to see all the players in unison and allowing for solidarity among the group as they palpably responded to the collective rousing cheers.
The blacks and whites then cleaved with the latter doing more work on the mini-hurdles and the former engaging in a drill targeting ball movement with the emphasis on slick handballs releasing players to better positions. Those at the hurdle point undertook some sprinting. Both rotated to the other station and then the whole squad were involved in some longer sprints close to full pace.
Following this there was a drill on the outer side of the oval rewarded with some raucous applause. Half the players wore lime-green bibs and what transpired was a combination of evasion, quick handball drilling which also featured tackling. Firstly, the blacks, and then the white contingent completed this.
After a rehydration break there was some whole ground movement and when Markov slotted a clever goal he turned to the excited crowd for acknowledgement. JDG as per usual travelled incognito as he negotiated all the work in dominant style. This segment was characterised by fluent movement of the pill and the onlookers were treated to Nick Daicos’s effortless transitioning in and out of play.
While some of the forwards worked assiduously at their goalkicking craft, the ruck and midfield group rehearsed their clearance and stoppage objectives. Hill, McCreery and Jamie all had many shots at goal with varying levels of success.
The final main part of the menu was some match simulation. The black team representing the seniors prevailed 3.1 to 0.0 which one might expect. Lippa was lining up on a wing and the goals included a brace to the precocious Nick and one to Frampton, while JDG hit the post late. One of Nick’s goals was set up by a brilliant Elliott intercept. The ball spent most of the time in our forward zone because of the talent disparity. It was heartening to see Dean completing match play again. The crowd gasped when Moore chased a low ball on the outer boundary which was slippery and this tested out the hammies but he emerged with a handball which hit the target. Ginni was in black here and looks the obvious choice to be sub regardless of his relatively indifferent form in this role during the finals. Overall, the standard of the simulation was a tad scratchy at times but punctuated with some fluid ball movement which culminated in targets being hit.
Towards the end the DJ chose Kiss with its signature I was made for lovin’ you hit to reverberate around the arena as a dress rehearsal for the pre-game entertainment and endeavoured with mixed success to have the crowd sing the chorus of Sweet Caroline.
Momentarily some fans were distracted from training by some zones which were being attacked by Magpies as they circled the oval.
It’s hard to do crowd estimates but this was certainly larger than any recent gathering. Clearly many had truanted from work. Is there really a need for a Grand Final holiday when so many people seem to get school holidays every time they’re allocated?
Thankfully we appeared to get through the session unscathed given that Tay Adams was a casualty during that Friday evening slot. We will miss Adams and McStay but have to trust the selectors in how they’ve configured the team given that they generally seem to get it right.
The heat may be a call to arms for more runners, but equally may be conducive to the aerial specialists.
It's been a rollercoaster journey in 2023 and we've ridden the vicissitudes of fortune and fate with many more highs than lows and the army should be grateful that they were allowed to attend pre-Grand Final training when fans of sixteen other teams weren't afforded this privilege.
