There always a higher risk of not flushing a snap then a drop punt from distance. It just wasn’t a percentage play.
Nah. Not the way they do it with set shots - it's not a contorted snap from a pack.

From close in the snaps are higher percentage because you've got a bigger area of the ball you can strike for it to still go straight enough to be a goal - that bigger area gradually shrinks as you get further away from goal. From that range you'd have to computer simulate it to know when it becomes lower percentage.

I’m happy for players to go with whichever they feel most comfortable. If he felt he was a better chance to score by snapping from 40m, then so be it.

Skill error. No different to Cox missing a set shot.

If a player wasn’t feeling confident about his drop punt, no point to force it. How I wish Travis Cloke had this mentality when he was kicking 20m out from goal.

Nah, snaps are definitely easier to miss kick from distant set shot or not and you don’t need a computer to tell that Ginnivan’s shot was a low percentage one.

I care more about facts than feelings. Fact is he was always going to struggle with distance snapping from there regardless of whether or not he felt comfortable with a drop punt or not.

Agreed, if the coaches directive is to do what they need to do to relax and calm the nerves he has done exactly that
As a Dir Football explained it to us. It goes from Sunny having a meal at the pub with his wife drinking lemonade, to Sunny at the pub, to Sunny drinking, to Sunny pissed at the pub, to Sunny being locked up, to half the team being out on the tear and locked up pissed - ‘no wonder they lost. Did you hear about last night?’

Not what sponsors want to hear. Best to stay away from all places that serve alcohol after Tuesday.

He strikes me as the kind of guy that will talk about getting into super shape over the preseason but doesn't have the discipline to do it. Has smarts and skill, but no great athletic traits and doesn't have defensive bone in his body. He had 16 tackles in 14 games this year.

I hope I'm wrong, but I see him either moving clubs this time next year or being delisted given his contract expires next year.

You gotta have faith in Fly though, and he seems to believe in him!!

What is the difference? From all we know it was a brief, sober, early outing on a Friday night.
McRae saying he "will learn" is a political way to say that it wasn't a brief or sober or early Friday outing. Why not just say it was a boring night the club green lighted? The fact it needs consequence indicates something.

Jack will need to grow sooner rather than later or risk wasting his career.

I'm in two minds about this.

On the one hand its a bad look and its stupid to put yourself in that situation. By extension it has the potential to bring avoidable scrutiny on the club at incredibly important time. So it lacks awareness or is selfish.

Then again I reckon there must be a battle to calm nerves and stay composed before a GF. In that light distracting yourself with a social event seems harmless.

He won't be delisted but he could be traded if we want draft picks.

No mate, I think it was more that Fly was a bit concerned about the 'look' of it, and him giving the public ammunition to use against him and the team by making an appearance there. I don't reckon him going to the races on friday without drinking is actually an issue in principal, it's more what others will undoubtedly say about it.

Fly's comments seemed somewhat tongue-in-cheek to me anyway and I don't reckon young Jack is actually in any significant trouble over it.

It was a dumb kick. About 40m out with not much of an angle.
That is a drop punt every day.
A year ago eeryone was saying that whenever someone missed a set shot snap 20m outs. Now, if you're going to be critical Elliott should have copped criticism for missing a drop punt against Melb from 20 - should have been a snap every day of the week. There's little doubt that there's a distance where the drop punt becomes a higher percentage option - but I don't think that's been worked out yet.

I don't think Fly was implying it wasn't a sober or early evening, just that he'd prefer Jack had've made a difference choice altogether.

Jack was fortunate to be surrounded by great players, great leaders and great coaches to pull him through much of the year. He should stop and ask himself what will happen to his career if he ends up at the Bulldogs or Essendon who do not have the culture we do. His career will go fast off the rails. Does he really think going to the races the night before the grand final is something his coaches and teammates wouldn’t care about?

I've never been a fan of Ginnivan's on field antics, but I don't get the pile on about his Friday night or his grand final play.
As with McCreery, he could have put the Lions in an impossible position if he had been accurate, but he wasn't. He didn't get a lot of the ball, but he rarely does. His high ratings in games depend on good disposal. Nobody seems to be saying he did anything against team rules on Friday night. Leave him to enjoy his premiership, and enjoy your observation of it.

Just seems to be a case of just because you can doesn’t mean you should.

2024 is make or break and it’s all up to Jack.
To be honest, he has a lot of work to do on many areas of his game. I'm not sure he's going to have a super long career. Needs to add speed off the mark and improve his leading patterns and marking

No there was an undercurrent of annoyance there - not fury - but for me the unspoken extension of "read the room" was "time to own your career and leave adolescence behind".

Ginni is a great kid but he is playing with fire - average AFL careers are SHORT and Bobby is already taking the Lions (sic) share of the attention as a small forward.

If he doesn't focus he could easily find himself looking for another club - not so much because of his social actions per se but because of the perceived lack of focus on a career millions of kids would kill for.

Ante up Ginni and be the player you can be . . Fly will back you as will the coaching staff and player group but you need to own it.
Ginni’s not perfect, but he worked incredibly hard to get back into the team. I don’t think this point is completely lost on him.

Yeah this is fair. You read one article on this and it's like Fly is telling Jack off, listen to him and he sounds relaxed.

I don't think the club will be hiring Redman to execute Jack over the matter but he may face a little fine or something.

I think the “read the room” comment was a nod to McStay, Noble, Adams etc. You don’t want to take the opportunity for granted, because they don’t come around every year.
Yep I'd say so. It's not really about the actual impact that this has, it's how it looks. The media will make a thing out of it which in itself is not ideal (would have been worse if we'd lost), but how it looks to the players who did miss out is the real potential problem.

Some of you need to get off your high horses 🐎

Nope, criticism of Ginnivan is entirely appropriate. if we lost, the coaches wouldn’t be too thrilled with his game or going out the night before.

0 tackles, 0 attempted tackles, after all the work the coaches put into him about improving his defensive efforts, is a big step back.

Going out the night before?

He was there for an hour and the last race was at about 9.15.

Sounds like a real bender!
