So sick of all this fan posturing. When has a club ever in history hung on to an uncontracted player that has asked to leave? This ‘we will match and keep him’ rubbish is just that, absolute rubbish.
I guess it depends on your clubs list strategy. Gresham is a restricted FA. The mechanism of ‘restricted’ is designed to give the club some power should they choose that they need that player and it works within the strategy.
We’ve been pretty adamant we want to invest through the draft for the entire season, so for us, it makes sense to let Gresham go IF he helps us get into the pointy end of the draft. However if the offer tabled to him is modest, and doesn’t improve our draft hand, we’re within our rights to match and retain him, on a contract that would clearly be friendly to st Kilda because it didn’t trigger an early compo.

Back to the question - when has it ever happened in history? I don’t think you understand how free agency works. You don’t get to retain him, if you match and he still wants to leave you have to trade him. Just like a standard uncontracted player.

No one is saying we will keep him.

We are saying we will match to force a trade.

The situation Essendon is trying to avoid - hence this entire compo bs.

A contracted Gresham would cost a first round pick (middle to late)

You can sign him to whatever contract he agrees too. That doesn’t mean the compo is fair to us and restricted free agency - which multiple clubs have used, has shown that as an avenue to extract better compo.

And if he doesn’t want to leave? He stays..

And if he still wants to leave, you need to move more than just money, you now need to cough up an asset.

So, with all of that in mind, what benefit is there to St Kilda in moving on the compensation we receive from the AFL?

Bumping up his salary means we don’t match, which means we don’t force you to part with anything more than cash, and to offset the cash you’ve had to fork out we’re happy to take on Shiels contract. The same Shiel that’s body is falling apart and is currently recovering from surgery.

Son of bitch you beat me to it, and you did it better.

You guys are wasting a lot of words typing scenarios that won’t happen. You’re not going to match, Lyon doesn’t want Gresham and you won’t do better than a second round pick for him via trade which is what you’ll get as compo anyway. I’m genuinely shocked this is even a conversation.

The only free agents that have been threatened to match and actioned are ones that are stars of the competition where the compo is so far removed from the real trade value (Danger and Cameron). This is not the case here. End of story.

They don’t get it.

They believe the only reason to over pay Gresham is to give themselves a first round compo and we can enjoy their second rounder and the corpse of Shiel 😂

You Essendon supporters talk so matter of factly - yet you are so far off the pulse.

Gresham is a good afl player - hence your interest is going to end up giving us pick 19 at worst.

There isn’t a genuine scenario, where we say. No worries Essendon. Enjoy Gresham and enjoy his compo pick too. Yes we will gladly enjoy your second round pick and Shiel ffs 😂

We don’t ******* want Shiel. We want the pick (band 1 compensation) that comes with taking Shiels rotting corpse for the remainder of his contract.
I don’t think I’ve mentioned Shiel at all? The fact you think we would be concerned about you matching as the reason for us bumping up the offer is the funny party in all of this.

Are you planning on splitting 8 or trading your future first?

Because you have nothing else to give us … if we match.

Which we won’t.

You’ll pony up.

We would match anything that we feel doesn’t get us appropriate compensation for our asset.. to then give us a better opportunity at getting appropriate compensation, directly from Essendon and not from an AFL hand out..

As you said, when in history has a club matched and the player stayed put? Never. So under that premise, did it cross your mind that perhaps GWS matched Cameron, not to keep him, but to obtain compensation they were happy with for their asset.

Wheres the bang my head on a table emoji?

If you match and he still wants to go, there is zero chance you get a first round pick dude. As I've explained to you so many times.

Which is exactly why you won't match. We're increasing the price for a net benefit to us for a player that approached your club about a trade.

The supporters don't want Shiel. The people actually in charge of the club quite obviously do. If they didn't this round and round with you lot wouldn't be happening. It's not that hard a concept to grasp.

Your over confidence is going to be quite funny.

You have convinced yourself the only thing that makes sense is getting yourself a first round pick 😂

Yes. My repeated statements of saying I don't think that'll happen clearly shows that.

As far as overconfidence, you seem to be quite proud of the fact you continually miss the point.

I don’t think we’ll necessarily get a first rounder if we match… but we may ask for a player that we feel is equal value to Gresham. In which case, would this align with your list strategy?
