Exactly. No one. When McStay was injured, we had no forward options to replace him. The only option we had was to play someone on Andrews to nullify his impact. Enter Big Bill. If he kicked a goal or 2 it would have been a bonus. But he allowed other forwards the freedom to do their thing.
If he had taken and converted each of his 3 easyish marking chances he might have had Norm Smith votes.

Wasn't really referring to whether those players & us are better off where they now are..we've all got different opinions & it's been done to death on this thread & its over & done with now.

...just saying that previously in these circumstances, Eddie would have demanded they stay and paid them whatever was needed to keep them there.

And we all know we're still paying players who are not playing for us. And Wright is still cleaning up the mess that was left behind.

At the end of the day, what's done is done with Adams & Ginni. They're probably better off individually & the club is not paying ridiculous contracts to anyone, anymore.

And we just won a flag. So onwards & upwards 😉
Yes, Eddie was responsible for getting Beams back and retaining Grundy at all costs.
And the coaching succession plan.

We are sitting pretty. There's no obvious hole for next year on the list. Ruck is the only area you could say we don't have elite talent. Also really bullish on Mcinnes, Finn, Ryan and Allan all pushing their way for spots. Beyond 2024 we will need to look towards some inside talent to replace Pendles and some tall defensive cover.
Hopefully we can pick up a really good mid of key back at our 1st pick in this year's draft.

Do we read anything into that Hawthorn poster's comment that Wrighty is good on the way up but not on the way down?
Wright tried to turn over the list after their threepeat side retired. The other leaders (I assume Clarckson and Kennet maybe) decided to keep rolling over older players but Hawthorns draft capital had eroded (they were the FA kings which didn't endear people) and their punts didn't pay off: so the "less good on the way down" is factual, although there are arguably extenuating circumstances.

Maybe he cracked the shits but he said himself he needed a change.

I think he's a realist and will pull the trigger on a rebuild slightly too soon rather than much too late.

He's clearly learned that hardball doesn't pay off, kind moneyball has been the order of the day.

Oh SEN said he went well, I stand corrected
If you've listened to 'all' the radio broadcasts & TV replays like many of us have, and the commentary afterwards..it was widely acknowledged by commentators that Frampton was playing a defensive role on Andrews. Which he did well. Andrews had 1 intercept mark & 1 spoil up until 3 quarter time.

It definitely wasn't just one person on sen who recognised & acknowledged this.

It was a great coaching directive from Fly when he knew we had no like for like replacement for McStay.

No your opinion is just that it’s your opinion and no one agrees with you that’s all Frampton played the role the coaches asked of him and helped his team to win a Premiership and all your doing is complaining about Billy’s performance I bet the Lions are more upset that Andrews couldn’t take advantage of the match up he underperformed for 3 quarters and that’s thanks to Billy and the rest of the team it’s about a TEAM performance and Billy played his role Andrews was useless for 3 quarters Billy did amazing to keep him out of the game for so long
🙄

Yep. No doubt he wanted to ensure Stepho stayed & on the big bucks.. others have said he was also responsible for Treloar's contract being heavily back-ended..

Our midfield is full of guys over 30, we desperately need a young mid to step up because the over 30 group is gonna get worse next year not better.

If Shultz can be a genuine midfield option that obviously helps too

Our cap will be getting better by then and a heap of space will open up. We’ll attract some nice RFA’s.

Who knows, but maybe McStay missing the GF was a blessing in disguise.

Thats assuming the performance from our older players doesn't drop or there aren't injury issues. The chances of injury problems being a problem increases with an older list. There's not much we could have done about that either way in one off season anyways, but we were sitting prettier in 2010 with one of the youngest premiership sides than we are now with one of the oldest IMO (and obviously that didn't work out quite like we expected).

Lol fair enough.
I take some hope that our older players have had younger ones surpass them across the season, even though they were huge in moments that count. Pendles has Nick and Jordy pushing to new levels. Josh made all Australian in Steele's position. I don't think we have the same level of quality to cover Howe, but we do have AA talent in Maynard and IQ in that role. I actually think Schultz is about as good a replacement you can find for Elliot also.

Regarding 2010, I think people focus too much on the "premiership or fail" mentality. That team made the next grand final and the prelim after that before dropping off. If we make the top 4 the next 2 seasons then I see that as a massive win and hopefully we can snag 1 or 2 more.

The new team including McRae, wright and co inherited this list. It is well know to have holes through no fault of their own. We burnt high picks in beams, screwed the 2013 draft, threw away picks with treloar, cap issues, and so on. It’s not faith they are putting jnto them. It’s the hand they’ve been dealt. Wright and McRae are only beginning to turn the list over. We seriously lack picks to really fix previous admin problems. But at least we’ve got a flag

I know you are right McRae and Wright did inherit a poisoned chalice and have done a fantastic job of turning it around so fast but I would liked a bit more for Ginnivan but water under the bridge now.

McRae is a great development coach and if anyone can make Reef,Allen,Steene and co into AFL players I think it will be him,I had a hissy fit over losing Ginnivan for not very much but I am over it now and your post helped me see the wood from the trees,Go Pies.

Fly stated he was contemplating switching Billy when Murphy went down but didn’t want to give up what he was contributing to keeping Andrew’s quiet

very early on in the game though, and we were in control in that first qtr even though the scoreboard was close due to their accuracy
look we won, that’s the most important thing
how it ever got that close was my concern

I’m still feeling “we” got ripped off; not hugely. I don’t have gastrointestinal issues but I’m experiencing a slight dyspepsia regarding losing Ginnivan, Adams and gaining Schultz. Just would have preferred more for Ginni and Adams.
The list is good and hopefully some in the two’s really step up. The loss of next years first rounder doesn’t sit as well as it might.

It commenced with Adams albeit a toe in the water. We could have dug our heels in and kept him to his contract then got essentially nothing for him in 2024. Going early while there was value there was the start of that transition process. Hopefully it’s more 07-10 than what WC and now Richmond are going through.

We're pretty luck to be in a position to have what looks like a generational talent (Nick) arriving in time to replace a Goat (Pendles). Every premiership team has 3 or 4 players who seem to just have come from nowhere. I can see us needing some serious impact from Macrae, Carmichael and Reef for us to stay out in front. I wouldn't be surprised to see some new teams (adelaide in particular) shoot up and challenge too.
