Timely comments from AFL Talent Manager Mick Ablett re folks referring to a shallow draft. Some bright sparks here have declared categorically that there's not much to come after 15 or so; how can they be so emphatic?
I swear you just come in here, call people out, then disappear for a few weeks, and rinse and repeat.

Say what you want about certain posters, but at the very least they tag who they call out, or respond to the critiquing with their own POV.

This self policing about what other posters are allowed to say or discuss isn't helping anyone.

As long as nobody is hurting anyone else, bullying or trolling another poster or player, it's okay IMO.

We're here to discuss opinions on football, it's literally what the site is for.

Gone on my ignore list now. Same schtick everytime, and loves to be contrarian for the sake of it.

Nevermind that all and sundry from draft scouts on here, to club draft scouts and leading industry people, have all said this is the most shallow draft in recent memory.

Also neglects to mention that while Michael Ablett thinks it's disrespectful and talent managers need to 'look deeper', that the reasoning the draft is more shallow, is because clubs are now leaving spots for the SSP and MSD - and letting more speculative picks develop further before they draft them down the line.

So in actuality, Michael is not even entirely disagreeing, just hates how it reflects on the draftees who work hard for the opportunity, and wants those factors taken into consideration when calling it a 'shallow draft.'

Poor reading comprehension it seems - as too overtaken by the need to be the one with the different 'independent' view...to actually understand what the article and Ablett are actually saying.

Have a look at the footage of some of the blokes in Twomey’s rankings and tell me this is a deep draft.

Bang on.

I like Mick Ablett, he seems like a genuine, reasonable guy, likewise Shifter Sheehan.

But if you're to listen to them at draft time, every pick is a future 3x Brownlow medalist. Every club has got the steal of the century, every recruiter has just pushed themselves into legend status.

It makes sense. It's a the time of year to sell hope to footy supporters of all clubs, but it's just not reality.

Maybe it because these young men are still kids in many respects, and it's to be commended how respectful and supportive these guys are.

If I had a son or daughter being drafted, I'd love what they do, and it's a great confidence boost in a time of great uncertainty and trepidation.

Unfortunately though, it very rarely amounts to bring close to the truth

What's your estimation of how many get taken?

Worst I've seen stated is 40-45, best case I've heard is 55-60.

Thoughts?
I reckon there's some talent past the 40's.

It's interesting that I struggled to put 40 together I'd be confident get drafted without a doubt - so it definitely feels shallower.

Even Bangers on the main board only has a Top 40 this year, as he's struggling to see much depth.

Perfect year for us tbh, as not many have that many open list spots, and we love a good smokey at the end of the draft.

Might not even be that 'out there', if we've looked a bit further/deeper knowing the draft hand we'll have.

Beauty is in the eye of beholder.

This is the only time I can remember people at clubs publicly saying they think the draft is weak. Admittedly Port Adelaide don't have any picks and Gold Coast will only be getting academy players but it's very strange for them to come straight out and say the draft is weak.

For those suggesting we’d give up 8 & 25 for North’s 17 & 18, after bids that will be 10 & 29 for 22 & 23. I’d hope there’s no way we’d do that.

No chance i agree. I might do it for 11 and fr1 from melb though or 10 and 14 (maybe we send picks back) from adel though. Only live on the night once we know who is there.

Its not the first 5 are very good the first 15 or so will be pretty good afl players and then its spec picks after that.

Jay Clark saying Cats are keen on Caddy but expect Melbourne to take him at 6

I would be surprised if melbourne dont take whichever of caddy or watson are there but that might mean curtin or sanders get through to us. Be interesting to see if wce or freo offer us a future 1st for our pick if curtin is there.

According to Jay Clark

1. REID
2. MCKERCHER
3. DUURSMA
4. WATSON
5. SANDERS
6. CADDY
7 GWS ?.??

He believes Giants could trade pick to somebody who wants Curtin.

I don't like how Jhye Clark hasn't re-signed...
I hope we hold pick 8, trading it should only happen if North (Sanders) and WCE (Curtin) is available.. I would only accept a future first and an end of r1 pick though.. It sounds overs, but if your trading into a future draft you can't assume it will be a top 10 pick. A sweetener needs to come back as well..
He and his family huge Pies supporters.
That's where he'll POSSIBLY end up.
