The Pies got the biggest home and away crowd in Sydney 20 years ago. It isn’t growing the game or helping the giants at all.
And as explained his call of more interstate trips than the pies have had in 9 seasons is factually incorrect.

exactly why they need to keep growing the game up there to get a new generation of supporters in Sydney that will support the sydney based clubs, they are taking advantage of the week the NRL are not in aus to get more eyes on the game it will be only sport there that week end more people will be keen to go

You were both exaggerating to prove a point.
But what's not an exaggeration is that Collingwood, on average, travels much less than the rest of the competition. So complaining about travel makes you sound ridiculous.
They averaged 9k in Sydney when you take out the Swans outlier
It is not growing the game if the attendance is predicated off fans travelling up from Melbourne. It just papers over the cracks. Also if they were after attendance to grow the game they could have got 60k at the Olympic stadium next door. I mean the idea is to get eyes on footy while the NRL is in Vegas. You could say it was the perfect opportunity for the Giants to get the highest home and away crowd in Sydney for any sport in 2024

1990: Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Richmond, Hawthorn, Geelong, Melbourne, Perth, Fremantle, Adelaide, Port Adelaide, Tasmania, Sydney, Brisbane.
Starts out with 14 teams, then in the 90s, Gold Coast and Canberra join to make it 16 teams.
Then in the 2010s, North Perth and Western Sydney join to make it 18 teams.
The last expansion cycle would be >2050 with Darwin and Cairns to make it 20 teams.
Instead, we are looking at a different future. Personally, I'd prefer to see Canberra, Perth 3, Adelaide 3, Darwin and Cairns first over teams in New Zealand, Newcastle or wherever else, even though they're miles ahead of most in terms of population.
There really is just 2-3 too many teams in Victoria. Viable or not, it limits what expansion could be rather than is.

Completely agree. And the unfortunate result is even when these Victorian clubs sell games to secondary markets due to financial issues, they only do it as a temporary measure, so that they can afford to then play all their home games in Victoria.

Newcastle is big enough but Canberra isn't? How's their "size" a limitation?
Also, this, "There’s a reasonable argument that the Giants should consider relocating to the capital as it is." Never gonna happen, Western Sydney is a much bigger market than Newcastle.
I agree with him about WA3 not adding much to the game other than balance as Vic having 10 teams and WA having 2 is absolute bullshit.
But Newcastle needs to actually be tested as a secondary market first, that's the huge flaw in his argument. Number of AFL games that's been played in Newcastle? 0.
Why not give them a taste in 2033? Give Canberra a team, get the Giants out of there (the AFL can force them out if they go for Canberra for team 20), turn the Giants attention towards Newcastle.
If support is as good there as he thinks they could be, give them a serious look at for a team 21-22 expansion if it ever happens.
Newcastle would have to be the most pro-NRL city in Australia. Establishing an AFL club there would be a significantly harder task for the league than GWS. Canberra already has a strong Australian Rules fanbase as evidenced by the strong crowds for Giants games at Manuka.

It would be lunacy to make them the 20th team.
If they ever have an AFL standard ground and can host 2-3 games per year while cracking 20k crowds (majority of whom are locals) then yeah, consider it, but until then, it's just as fantastical as an NT team is.
And if you can't get anyone to play games in Newcastle then they can't be considered an expansion option.

I don't think WA3 will ever happen. Just because something can be done doesn't mean it should.
The thing about WA3 is that 10 teams in Vic and 2 in WA is kinda bullshit.
If Vic can have 10, WA should have 3, but not at the expense of Canberra.
Canberra first, then WA3 as team 21 or 22, but I do suspect that if the AFL ever does go beyond 20 teams, that you're right and neither WA3 or SA3 will be on the AFL radar.
There's just too many potentially new markets the AFL could tap into and WA3/SA3 just takes up valuable expansion slots that will be increasingly limited in the future.

has to be Canberra they deserve it, GWS are finally getting strong support in western sydney time to grow on that and move on from Canberra so they can have their own side

I agree. Where do you think GWS should play their home games during the Easter Show period when the Showgrounds is unavailable? This should be an important consideration, because their choice of venue would be key ensuring they can maintain their presence and momentum with fans in Western Sydney throughout the entire season.

unsure but they still have Canberra for now use that when their home ground is not available, or schedule it so they are away during that time or beg the swans to use their ground
