Agree with most of that except Noble. Brought enthusiasm but little impact when introduced. What we saw tonight was pretty much what got him dropped last year.

Also think that if you're going to play one of Cox or Cameron forward, they need to start there. Was disappointed Cox started on the pine. I'm not sure how much Cameron actually lined up forward if at all. Watching on TV it seemed his scoreboard impact occurred while he was in the ruck.
I thought it was odd. Thought Cox should've started on the field and maybe spent more time rucking with the.more.movike Cameron up forward.

I will say in fairness to Mason, he's become a much more consistent player the last couple of seasons (remember the days thisnwas a regular output for him). That makes an effort like last night stand our all the more. I love the vibe he brings during the week, but sometimes he leads with his chin and it can come back to haunt him. But talk.of him being back to his absolute worst is over the top.

And I say all this as an ardent defender of him. So come at me. Looking forward to how he views his game on the podcast this week

THE GOOD:
•No injuries
•Pendles playing in front of twenty million spectators throughout his career
•DC, Maynard and Nick’s game

THE BAD:
•Apart from DC and Mihocek our talls were nowhere to be seen
•McStay’s absence is very significant
•Lots of fumbles and poor skill execution
•The defensive structure
•Not enough help in the midfield - this is the type of game a player like Mitchell gets exposed
•Lack of aggression when teams come at us

THE UGLY:
•Goal kicking accuracy
•Cox talking the talk but not being able to walk the walk
•AJ’s ineffectiveness without the ball
•The forward 50 connection

It's not the end of the world, we acknowledge where we went wrong and we get back to work.

Whilst we were really bad, we had more inside-50s and just as much scoring shots.

Looking forward to see how the coaching panel rectifies this.

Magpies defense was far below their best. The new guy was a weak point and it affected the veterans rotation and pressure.
But kudos to Giants for exposing it.

The midfield was a bit even except Giants were quicker and much more efficient in disposals that lead to goal attempts. Pies forward line looked disoriented. Felt that Schultz and Elliot combo along with Hill as being too small. The Giants defenders could spoil any aerial attempts and apply pressure easily with their lengths.... the Pies small forwards did not play fast nor spacious enough which neutralises the advantages.

With that said... I said last season that if Giants won against Pies that they would beat Lions in GF.... they are that good.

This game showed that Giants are a serious premiership contender side. They had no weakness and their speed and efficiency reminds me of Hawls 2015.

Pies need to find a strategy against Giants if they want to go back to back.
Giants are a very good team. They’ve been engineered that way for a very long time. Aka thanks to help from the AFL.

Markov if anybody. Lipinski is safe for now and in fact was pretty good early
Markov is a far bigger body and therefore a far more versatile option than Noble.
Markov has taken his spot - which is why people have said Noble’s only salvation is change his game and find a new position.

I don’t think we can play worse than that which is a positive. AJ has to go out for Reef next round, he is consistently inconsistent when the pressure is on against tough competition. Had me missing Frampton ffs! Let’s see what Reef has to offer sooner rather than later.

That’s why I qualified my statement with the “ if anybody”. I probably agree Markov is still the incumbent… but we still need to remember he’s still a fringe player and not a lock.

Yeah. Compare it to the banter of a week ago
A week ago we had convinced ourselves that the fitter and more intense Johnson would step into McStays shoes and give us strength at the contests. He didn't and frankly, at best, he doesn't look any better than last year.

Schultz was much heralded but has sent shock waves out among supporters who thing we may have jettisoned x factor material and replaced it with a little work donkey that fumbles. That maybe, after all, 3 forward midg*ets may be one too many, particularly in the absence of quality big men to bring the ball to ground. Schultz has time on his side. Let's hope he uses it wisely.

Let's hope some of last night's apparent exposure of inadequacy is somehow can somehow be papered over, or even better, that most performances were aberrations, never to be repeated, that Johnson can stride the forward ground like a colossus, or that their best is not truly behind the likes of Elliott, Cox, and Pendlebury.

We couldn't have a better test than the Swans. The chinks in our armour will have been noted and planned for, and Grundy will be eager to show us why we were wrong in not believing he is worth a million a year. We need to win this one.

i agree
I mentioned that on this board last week and got shut down
I think dean can go alright, but its really clear we lack a strong body in the backline
The thing is that Murphy has been that very player for us up until this point and we sorely miss him, so IMO it’s not been a case of us overlooking a list need, rather unfortunate circumstances putting us in the spot that we’re in with our available KPD stocks.

Howe returning will go a long way in terms of plugging that defensive hole, however until we have clarity on Murphy, we are going to need one of Dean or Frampton to take a big step up in his spot.

Given it was the first proper game of the year, I think there will be a bit of a 'shaking off the cobwebs' approach, players who may not find the selection committee so forgiving if it was mid-season, will get another crack this week.

However, we really did have a lot of passengers and more than a few concerns. Talls murdered, terrible entry into the forward 50, really missed Howe and Murphy down back. Mitch, Pendles and Steele aren't getting any younger, nor is Cox. Plenty to keep and eye on this week and ponder. Swans will be very hard to beat.

Mids smashed? We won clearances!

Smacked on defensive running. GWS ran hard to help thier defense and then blitzkrieg it back out on turn over.

Also thought many times in skirmishes for the ball in packs around the ground, they put thier heads over it and went in harder. Where as some of ours were ball watching and staying out when they probably should of cracked in.
Imo it's an area Nick Daicos needs to improve when there is no one else going in and he's there sometimes it's his turn.

It's an area Josh Daicos has come on in leaps and bounds.

COLLINGWOOD
Nick Daicos: A+

Typical Nick Daicos game. Did things others can't do. Had plenty of clearances, disposals and hit the scoreboard. Just didn't have enough teammates supporting him.

Josh Daicos: A

Picked up where he left off last season getting plenty of it and hitting nice kicks.

Darcy Cameron: A

Enjoyed a ruck battle with Kieren Briggs and edged him. Was clearly Collingwood's main man at the centre bounces and hit the scoreboard a couple of times.

Patrick Lipinski: B+

Had a strong pre-season and looks back to that 2022 form that made him such a boom recruit in the first place.

Brody Mihocek: B+

Had a solid battle against Sam Taylor and hit the scoreboard a few times. Could have been a bigger night if he kicked straight.

Brayden Maynard: B

Was made to play taller than usual and was caught out on some occasions. Still played well and helped keep Toby Greene relatively quiet.

Darcy Moore: B

A decent performance from Moore but clearly missed having both Nathan Murphy and Jeremy Howe alongside him. Too much left to the tall defender.

Isaac Quaynor: B

Looked great when he had it but didn't have his best night defensively.

Lachie Schultz: B

Showed plenty of signs in his first game but wasn't accurate enough in front of the big sticks

Beau McCreery: B

Did his role well and hunted GWS defenders all day. Didn't get a heap of footy himself.

Will Hoskin-Elliott: C+

Started well off half-back but went quiet as the game rolled on.

Jack Crisp: C+

Used off half-back for most of the game and didn't see a heap of it. Was eventually moved into the midfield and had a few moments.

Steele Sidebottom: C+

Worked into the game but didn't do a lot.

Oleg Markov: C+

Jamie Elliott: C+

An almost night. Just didn't have the finishing touch

Scott Pendlebury: C+

Came into the game with a knee issue and was poor in the first half. Worked into the game.

Jordan De Goey: C

Was well held by GWS who put a lot of work into him at stoppage.

Charlie Dean: C

Solid for a debut but wasn't able to break up enough of GWS' aerial entries.

Bobby Hill: C

Looked electric early but ultimately was pretty quiet without much opportunity.

Tom Mitchell: D+

Looked a little slow against a quick GWS midfield and was subbed out in the third quarter for John Noble

Mason Cox: D

No influence.

Ash Johnson: D

Didn't do enough to warrant his selection and was well beaten.

John Noble: N/A

Came on in the third quarter and tried hard. Wasn't out there enough to really impact.

The player who has gotten out of any criticism unscathed is McStay. Zero marks, zero goals and no presence whatsoever. It is like he wasn’t even out there
Yeah. Just the same as the criticism Jason Cloke received and rightly so for playing in the 2002 GF. Just ask Mick.

Whilst last night's result is extremely disappointing. It is one game. It was reminiscent of last years game against the Lions in QLD. We were impotent across the ground collectively. We were out Collingwooded. Our fast ball movement was missing ss was our chaos ball movement that was so predictable. We bled goals. Majority of their I50 marks and their goals were without pressure. Schultz had a servicable 1st game. Sidey, Bruz, IQ, Naicos, Josh and Cameron were our best. So many of our prime movers were MIA

Meltdowns here epic. Now that we lost, bringing Dean in was the wrong move. Frampton was the answer. When we win next week everyone will be singing praises again. Get a grip.

We need to get Dean in there, but it should have been alongside Frampton, not instead of.
