A bottom 5 finish would mean the dogs will ask for that and not leave it to chance by accepting our future first. But we can't be giving away a top 5-6 pick with so much talent available in this draft re-mids. It will set up our midfield stocks for 12-15 years which includes McKenzie, Ward, Newc and Day.

Can't see us sending them a top 5 pick for Smith.

F1 seems likely. I suppose it will depend on whether Smith pushes for the move. If we end up sending them a F1 then we, obviously, are going to back ourselves in to finally make a move up the ladder.

Also over the last few years we've brought in Ward, Mackenzie, Weddle, McCabe and Watson. We take pick 3 or so to the draft this season, and even if we are out of next year's first round we would still have drafted 6 first rounders in a 5 year period.

Obviously this is hypothetical discussion but worth keeping in mind by the time we hit this draft/fa we will have another season of games behind us .

We might be in a very different spot with how our players have developed in that time than we are right now.
We might have a few suprises pop up .
Young players can improve rapidly in season ( even at BH ).
A need now might be filled by a player we already have.

A Future first for Smith might seem like overs now but come end of season it could be an absolute no brainer to do it .

I reckon its worth keeping it in mind before dismissing a deal that might seem 'overs' right now

It's hard not to be worried about the injury and his recovery. The main issue is that we would be signing him without seeing him play, post his rehabilitation.

But some pace and drive around the ball is needed, and at his best Smith is one of the more damaging inside/outside midfielders in the league. The club has identified this hole and is being proactivr in trying to address it.

I'm confident a midfield group of Newcombe, Day, Smith, Mackenzie, Ward, Worpel and Nash will become one of the best (and deepest) midfield units in the league.

After the we need some KPD depth.

I wouldn’t mind getting Lewis Young from Carlton. 25yo 202cm KPD that can also pinch hit in the ruck. I was impressed with him early last year.

Kemp and Marchbank have been the preferred options. He can’t get a game in the seniors unless Weitering is out.

Would only cost us a 3rd or 4th round pick.

Bloke can not kick for shit, no thanks.

like Kingy says, there's no alternative to pace. speed solves everything. We got none of it in the midfield, time to pay up and get some!
No doubt we lack pace through the middle- Newcombe, Worpel, Nash, Ward, Mackenzie are all similar one pace type players…

Whether or not Baz is the answer coming off an ACL is the question… I think at the right price it’s worth the risk but given we’re not in premiership contention- giving up a 1st rounder would be destroying our future…

They wouldn't get a game at Hawthorn either.

SYL I listened to the podcast interview with Rob McCartney on Hawk insider that you posted in the Sam Mitchell thread and said people should listen to on how the rebuild is going to go.

Rob at the start admitted after the pre season games that what they saw is not what they expected to see in performance without paraphrasing, it has continued so do we need more talented kids on the list.
He did say that we have a quite a few holes that need to be filed.

He also said that they expected to have a slow start again and win more games in the second half pretty much the same as last year, but try to push for more wins and without the big blowouts in the first half of the season which I agree haven’t been massive margins at the end of the games but have been at half time.

Which really hasn’t happened the way we are playing and they expect more than 7 wins this year.

So if this continues the way it’s going at the moment maybe we need to pivot slightly.

I also listen to What makes Brad angry and he was pretty spot on with his assessment.
It’s good that you listened to the Pod with McCartney but now the hard part for you is you have to stop making declarations of where the list is at for talent based on the win/loss columns and wait and actually see what the year brings.

We won’t be getting him for his kicking. Look at what Frosty has been able to do this year.

We are not sure if Blanck or Phillips will make it. If we can find a KPD that stops the oppo forwards from kicking big bags that’s all we need.

It would free up Sicily, Scrimshaw and Weddle to play further up the ground.
I would prefer Battle but we are not a destination club at the moment.

I’m not sure how many people rated these players before they moved clubs for next to nothing in recent years and have become good role players.

G.Hewett, B.Acres, T.Bedford, B.Frampton

However bad you think Frost is at kicking, triple it and you have Young.

Same with Battle. Made him a huge offer - knows he can just walk to it as a UFA. That's why Ross brought it up in a pre game interview. He knows.

Not to mention Roughy I assume would have some level of relationship with him already after being at the saints

Caleb Graham from the Suns was highlighted today by Cal on AFL.com.au as possibility to move via trade.

A FB who can not break back into the suns line up and hasn’t played AFL since 2022.

Hmm poor agility and tank i would rahter stick with DGB.

Does anyone understand how pick purchasing might work? Would clubs purchase picks out of their cap allowance? If so, why would another club agree to sell given they (presumably) can't just roll the cash they get into their own cap (or can they?). If they rolled it into internal revenue then wouldn't the AFL just cut the allowance the club receives the following year on the basis that they had received a windfall for the sold pick?

And how does it work for clubs like us, the Tiges, Pies and Eagles, given we receive minimum money for the AFL? I guess we would be bidding for picks against clubs using money they got from the AFL that we didn't?! If the Roos out bid us for a pick using the extra money they get from the AFL I'd be pretty p*ssed off!

Anyone actually know how these schemes work?

We've met with Battle - three clubs besides the Saints vying for him - Dogs, Cats and us.
Grew up a fanatical Hawks supporter as a kid. His dad said he's pretty settled at the Saints and will likely stay. Looks like his manager is using us to get his contract dollars up. Dad did admit that a Josh and Roughy have a great relationship from roughs time at the saints.

True. All parts. I was more confident, but not sure, 10 days ago. I believe his management is using us. We need a commitment.
