I wish it wasn't always being cleared to cement hands can't kick big forwards and most importantly they weren't being coached by Sheev Palpatine and his band of bald idiots because just the midfield alone could almost win us the whole thing if all of those factors were gone.

Great first game back by MG. 2 goals is a decent return. Looked really comfortable out there, was moving well, and I thought did some really good work up the ground as well.

He had16 possies too should've had at least 3 goals

JHF needs to now focus on hitting those passes from centre clearance to Georgiades. Mitch is his best bet to lace out charging from the goal square. Cement hands Charlie and Finlayson will either be led to the ball by their opponent or spill it. Hot Toddy? I don’t know any more. Maybe he’ll tap it to someone for an assist or something. He does a bit each week but with tonight’s service should have had a field day.

Said it in the gameday thread but we absolutely should have shipped Wines off when we had the chance. Disposal much better without him.

I think Mead could take his spot as he has baulked up a bit and has better disposal.

He’s spreading ok to receive little outlet kicks, but it’s the getting caught holding the ball in traffic that he needs to work on. Mead should be modelling his workrate and game on Drew. Get to that level and he’ll have a very good career.

Yeah we did. We’re not winning it. We haven’t got the necessary forwards to. Dixon, Marshall and Finlayson are unreliable. Our defence is still a work in progress. In spite of that and Hinkley, with our midfield, we’ll go far but not far enough.

and JHF decided to remind Port supporters of the magic in #18 and that he wants to be Russell Ebert. Just a phenomenal midfield performance. Drew the perfect straight man to these superfreaks.

Soldo is a machine, rucked most of the game, demolished Goldstein and Draper, hitouts to advantage, who knew how good they could be. Goes to war at ground level and that balk and goal, lol.

All 3 tall defenders worked together with precision, Esava keeps improving, BZT does a job every week. I was sad to see Duursma leave, but really liking what BZT has added.

Was surprised to see X had 26 touches, hardly noticed him. Essendon overpossess the ball something chronic and go nowhere.

DBJ has become ahandy forward, pretty reliable kick for goal too.

Mitch, welcome back, didn't realise how much we missed you. Didn't miss a beat, covered plenty of ground, some nice leads and marks and a couple of goals. Really solid game back, put a smile on everyone's faces.

Finlayson best game for the year. For a guy who just feared the goals in the first quarter, he slowly came to face his demons and 3 goals was a good return. Found plenty of the ball too. Shoutout to Coobk001

Free kicks 9-20, only one team in Adelaide gets perpetual wristies from the umps. Then again, a good ride in this game would have been a waste.

Feel like the first few rounds, round 1 especially our mids were kind of like oh crap now we’re actually winning hitouts now rather than oh lets react to a losing hitout like we have the past few years after Ryder. It’ll take more time but for Soldo to do it against draper who is a good ruck and albeit an aging great in goldstein is still impressive. Today only marks the start of the clearance group gelling together

Quite ironic how 7s coverage had the low batt sign up and we seemed to go nuts instead of slow the game down. Maybe it meant the other team was gassing and to go hard.

as it stands right now DBJ is equal 5th in the coleman and our leading goal kicker. Who woulda known

Rioli is insane how he gets hand to ball to foot it is so quick and he knows where the goals are

Our forward spine in marshall and dixon had trash nights yet we chuck 17 goals and 100+ points on the board. Not bad

Goodness was just watching a midfield of Rozee, JHF and Butters and thinking it could end up being one of those legendary mids people always talk about like Voss/Black/Akermanis/Lappin, or Cousins/Judd/Kerr

What a turnoverfest of a game. Essendon didn't punish us at all, just basically kicking the ball straight back to us every time we turned it over. We'll need to be more tidy against a better team.

Midfield was elite. Soldo completely changes our stoppage setups, we're now super attacking and our centre clearance domination was the result. Rozee was incredible, that goal from 48m over his shoulder was unbelievable. JHF was so dominant at the clearances it was unbelievable. So much to like.

We just need to be coached a bit better. Tidier and more disciplined. The talent level is insane.

We really need a Blight like coach to come in and piss off all the old guys. Start with Dixon and then Wines and (sorry but also) Boak.

Dixon drives me nuts. He just plays so stupid. He never leads into the available space and his general play is just so dumb. Half the time he just bangs into his own players. I think it was the third when all he had to do was kick over the top to Marshall and it was a gaol. It didn’t even need to be a good kick - just kick it forward 30 meters so Marxhall could run onto it. Instead he waits an eternity and kicks it to the opposition. And the rushed snap was from the pocket. That should be a simple kick if you think it through. The only thing dumber than Dixon is the use of Dixon. What the hell is he doing playing deep and clogging up the space and getting in everyone’s way and then missing shots anyway. The forward line future is Marshall and Mitch. The future should be now. Get Dixon out of forward 50 and playing 2nd ruck or out of the team.

Surely the improvement with a mediocre ruck compared to lycett should show them the way of moving on old dead wood. That should have happpened two years earlier.

So why persist with all the plodders in the midfield when we have the most dynamic midfield trio in the AFL. The whole thing works so much better without Wines.

Finally just at observation - but at quarter time break it looked to me like all the players were in their groups with the line coaches and Hinkley was wandering around like he was some fan who had won a match day experience. I was deep in the riverbank stand so couldn’t be sure.

The real coaching problem is the guy in change of the forward line!!!!

Man, we have the three best midfielders we have ever had in the afl. (Counting Robbie as a forward). We have to make this work now.

Sorry this is so negative after what was a good performance.

Shout out to DBJ who seems to be turning his career around.

Rozee's game tonight is one of the best midfield games I've seen for a few years at least. Great games by Soldo & JHF.

I think that Mead and Burgoyne deserve a word. Mead got caught a few times but persisted and Burgoyne showed that he has a future at AFL level manages to get one on one wins and while his kicking isn't convincing both these guys can work to be better.

We were a bit easily opened up a few times in the first quarter when Essendon had the breeze, but we held them to 6 goals for the match. Can't ask much more than that.

Aliir and Esava were really solid, guess I didn't see their games the same as you.

Just on the frees, at the ground they counted the frees as against, hadn’t seen that there before.

FWIW, a behind is considered an inefficient disposal despite the fact it adds a score. Not sure exactly how they determine what is efficient and what is inefficient but that probably explains some of it.

Was similar to the GWS game late in the H&A season last year. Just a supreme midfield masterclass. Rozee, Butters and Horne-Francis with 93 possessions, 20 clearances and 3 goals between them. When that happens it's game over, doesn't matter who the opposition is or what anyone else on our team or their team is doing.

His scoring accuracy was 43% which I guess means 3 goals, 1 behind, 4 misses
