Pretty silly thing to do really, I don’t necessarily think JF is a homophobe, but punishment is required. A week or two and a donation to charity - pride cup?

Players say things on the footy field for a multitude of reasons. Frustration, retaliation, psychological edge. If it is racial or, in this case a gay slur, the AFL generally applies a strong community standard as most professional codes do.

Labelling Finlayson homophobic is a moot point tbh. He might be, he might not be but he certainly lowered his colours by the sound of it.

My understanding is he told a trainer what he said and trainer told him to apologise. Was he genuinely remorseful or worried about getting rubbed out or both? None of us know.

The AFL or maybe a federal body need to come up with a definite list of slurs and the group they harm that must not be uttered in public, sort like the '7 words you cannot say on TV'.

So would calling someone a 'cs' be homophobic? or a 'mf' be implying someone was incestuous?
How about calling someone 'soft'. Can you be sanctioned for implying they have PED and is that a vilification?
How about vilifying someone without using specific unacceptable terms? or if the 'victim' actually couldn't give a stuff and genuinely laughs at it?

My point is, it can be difficult to say what is and is not a slur. Especially when a particular slur is used within the victimized community themselves. Is it possible to have a definite list and boundary that can be used to adjudicate these things, or will it always be a subjective situation?

My point is, it can be difficult to say what is and is not a slur.
Wrong.

It’s actually quite easy for people with functioning brains.

Do you find it that hard to comprehend that your intrusion on the discussion btwn Malice and SAweagle is neither required or wanted?

Sheesh! Talk about NO filter.
It’s an internet forum. No invitation is required to participate. If anyone wants to have a private discussion, there is a function for that.

The AFL integrity unit called him in for an interview.

JF: What's the story?
AFL: We caught on mike someone saying something very offensive
JF: Did they say gay?
AFL: No Jeremy, not the G word
JF: Did he say f*****?
AFL: No, we didn't hear the F word

JF: Well then you didn't hear it from me!

---- End joke

I'm happy that it's being treated like any other immutable characteristic.

Despite what people will say, context actually matters in situations such as this.

Using it as an insult towards a straight person is completely different to doing it to a gay person.

It’s still not appropriate, but intent matters. Using a bad word doesn’t automatically = raging homophobe.
How would he know the sexuality of the person he used it against?
Spot on. God society is precious. It’s pathetic.
Given the AFL openly promotes LBGTQ+ inclusivity, it's actually not that difficult to work out why they don't want players using homophobic slurs on the field.

Beating up a straight person, and calling them a f***** because you think it is an insult isn't a hate crime.

Beating up a homosexual and calling them a f***** because they're a homosexual is a hate crime.

Thats where we hit on the differences between Tex's actions and Finlayson's.
No, it's assault. A crime is a crime. No such thing as a "hate" crime.
