I think there is no reason the club can't get a good or very good player from the VFL that fits our needs.
You would think a player would be up for a move interstate to get a go at AFL.
Just not a project player like Kalin Lane in 2021.
Need someone to fit into the current makeup of our side now.

SCOREBOARD

SANFL 1.1 5.2 8.4 10.5 (65)
VFL 3.2 5.4 5.5 7.9 (51)

BEST – SANFL: McLennan, Grant, Hosie, Proud, Wigg, Callow, Voss
VFL: Brown, Woodcock, Brew, Long
GOALS – SANFL: Hosie 4, McBean 2, Allen, Callow, Lowe, Reynolds
VFL: Long 2, Bianco, Crossley, Dixon, Smith, Woodcock

I think you need to temper your expectations. They’re mostly duds who have recently been delisted

I had a look through the mid season thread on the draft board and it's a pretty uninspiring list of players being put up as possible draftees.

If we do look at getting a mature ager in during the mid season draft I think as suggested above Boyd Woodcock would be as good as anyone else available, he is on the smaller side though but can find the ball and is handy around goal. He could play a role for us if we happen to suffer a midfield injury or 2, our depth is not all that good re mids.

Brayden Crossley is definitely worth a look.

We also need to find the best kick of a footy in the country and trial him at half back.
I think we need to give Torrent a good run in the VFL off half back because he is a beautiful left foot kick.

Rayner only has 9 plus 20 disposal games out of 116 AFL appearances. I feel for the young bloke, at no stage has he been afforded the opportunity to run around in the 2s and get 30 plus for a month, grab some monster marks and build his decision making/confidence. From day dot he was thrown in the deep end and not provided the opportunity to develop. He is not an idiot, he knows his output is nowhere near good enough, then he gets rewarded with fat contracts and a spot on the 9 man leadership team. * me! I bet he ends up somewhere else, wins a flag and then writes in his memoirs how the Lions were too soft on him and afforded him too many opportunities. There will be a tough love period at his next club, and he will then thrive or become a suburban goal kicking legend.
100% correct in every regard. The worst thing is that when it gets too tough at Brisbane, Cam’s management will announce he is requesting a trade to a Victorian club. Bookmark this post.

I always liked the look of Jez McLennan before he went to GC (assuming its the same guy). No idea why he didnt work out there

Shouldn’t expect anything from the mid-season draft but I wonder if we could target a professional sub.

Looks like more teams are using older, past their prime midfielders tactically as the sub to give their teams a boost.

Lyons worked ok at times last year but isn’t very damaging

I'd love to get a wingman from the mid-season draft. Someone who has running power and decent kicking skills.

I'm still bullish on moving Fletcher back to defense to do Coleman's rebound/playmaker role. For that to happen we need a proper mature winger who can take over from him.

Trent Bianco might be the right one, he's a good kick. Four years at Collingwood, now plays for Bulldogs VFL. Frank Szekely also did well in the VFL vs SANFL match. Hasn't been in an AFL system yet, but he's a couple of years older than Bianco. Szekely seems to be better known for his speed than his kicking.

I know highlights reels don't tell us the whole story, only the good parts, but Szekely really has some wheels on him and makes a lot of second efforts. Good signs.

That is one of the best highlight packages I have seen, amazing pace, X factor and overlap run, bloody good calm kick as well.

I googled him and he's 24 years old, I wonder what the knock on him is that he hasn't been able to get on an AFL list.

Send that video to our recruitment staff for mid season draft consideration JB.

A mature-age candidate out of the SANFL, Frank Szekely will be hoping his body of work at state league level prizes him a chance at the top level as a 23-year-old. Szekely impressed in his fourth year with the Roosters, stringing together a career-high 19 games in South Australia's top flight to put his name forward. He helped the Roosters to a grand final appearance, and also fared well in an exhibition match for the newly-formed Fitzroy Cubs against Carlton VFL, showcasing his speed and smarts as a small forward.

A factor which has set Szekely apart in 2022 has been his proven versatility. He cut his teeth mostly as a small forward, but began to utilise his sharp decision making and pace off both half-back and the wing this season. Capable of adjusting his game to roles at either end of the ground, his array of AFL traits have been displayed in different ways for recruiters to consider.

With clubs valuing running defenders who can stream forward and hurt the opposition, Szekely may fit that bill, with the remaining secondary value of his forward craft. He was a top performer at South Australia's draft combine too, finishing in the top five for the 2km time trial and standing vertical jump.

Good question. I didn't watch the state game but the recap on the AFL website says Szekely and another player caught the eye at different stages. So perhaps consistency is what holds him back. But his SANFL stats don't look super inconsistent either. Last year he had 6 games of 20+ possessions and 5+ tackles.

One thing I also noticed when searching BF, is that Geelong were rumoured to want him in the 2022 end of season draft, but ultimately didn't take him.

Just looking at the vision without any background re prior history or the things he can't do well he looks a very good prospect and ready to go at his age.

Some players do slip through the cracks.

Awesome. He's exactly what we need. He would actually suit both wing and rebounding off half back. Looks a bit Saad like.

He's a natural in terms of taking it for a few bounces and dashing away. That's what he's known, learnt and executed again and again in the lower levels so he'll blindly do it when we bring him into our team. I hope we get him.

We’ll pick another ruck and Geelong will pick this guy. He’ll then go on to win 5 all Australians. It is foretold.

Is he at Free Agency at the end of his contract!
If he gets decent offers elsewhere, I can see us not matching if he doesn’t lift his output. Similar to the McStay lowball offer we put to him.
I can understand him being a bit down at the moment with some personal stuff going on.
He is in the leadership group and his spot is the safest in the team. He won't be going anywhere unless we force him out.
