Rumour Jeremy Finlayson under investigation - 3 game suspension

Geez I think this punishment is completely way over the top. Finlayson stuffed up but his actions in the immediate aftermath suggests this was more of a slip of the tongue rather than directed with malice.

I think an education based program rather than several game punishment has considerably more value here.

I don't get the slip of the tongue argument. I have in the past inappropriately told people to "f*k off" as I have used that term multiple times and in tense or uncomfortable moments I have grabbed it from my very limited retort list. But I never use the word F**** or R***** as it's just not at the forefront of my mind. It may have been 30 years ago but not now.

We need a panel set up and list a number of words / slurs to see how offended people get so we can set fines / weeks for each. Least then it isn't a shot in the dark type response.

C***sucker is not inherently homophobic, while it can obviously be interpreted as such, it also has roots in the act of a blowjob being considered a demeaning act of sexual submission. This is common in pornography and is an example of rape culture.
It's the same way that telling someone to 'suck my d***' is an insult.

As a North supporter, I'll try to be unbiased. I don't think there is any role for a coach/official/runner/trainer/spectator to approach and insult a player during a game. I think that's worse than what Clarkson actually said.

Otherwise it risks non-players interfering with players, and I'd hate to see a brawl with people coming off the bench.

Regarding Finlayson - if I said something like he did at my work, I'd be stood down for a similar period, and risk being sacked. So although 3 weeks is a big penalty, it will now have everyone on notice. Good to see he immediately apologized, and I think it was more likely said as a childish putdown as a spur of the moment thing, than him intentionally being homophobic. He'll serve his time, and be better for it in the long run.

No problem with suspension, think a fine was enough but can live with suspension. But i draw a line on him having to do a pride course, that is out of order by the AFL. They should have no right to enforce that.
