My simple question is “Which players are a realistic chance of being on our list in a couple of year’s time”?

I am a known optimist but here’s my list who are very unlikely.

1) McHenry - no chance
2) Hamill - he continues to use his head as a battering ram. Sadly, it’s just a matter of time.
3) Borlase - he has been O.K. but is way behind Murray, Keane, Worrell and we need to get Curtin in the team. Ultimately we will have to choose between Borlase and Butts as our back up key defender.
4) Parnell - has shown some good traits in the SANFL and occasionally in the AFL but not an AFL body
5) Cook - I love the “concept” of Cook but after three years on our list he can’t find the ball at AFL or SANFL level. He has performed exactly as I predicted. Perhaps we give him a few more games and hope for a miracle.
6) Smith - The end is near.
7) Gollant - he is not a back up ruckman but neither are Himmelberg and Burgess. Probably will end up a back up player at best but this is the year to play him until Thilthorpe return.

Over the next 17 games we need to work out whether Berry, Schoenberg, Taylor and Dowling have a future.

Having watched the SANFL games except their last trial match, Bond, Edwards and Ryan are a long way from AFL ready but if they can string a few good games together then give them a taste.

Curtin is a tricky one. When he has the ball in hand he looks fantastic but he has struggled to defend against SANFL journeymen like Freitag and Pearce. I will watch closely to see how he handles the Tiger tall forwards today.

Looking at that list of 7 names, Hamill should probably get a 12 month extension. Apart from 7 delists/retires (plus Sloane) being a large number, Milera is somewhat a risk and with Smith and Parnell gone, there's need for depth behind the ball. Notwithstanding the inherent concussion risk Hamill brings with him. Happy to defer to your SANFL assessment, I do actually find those posts enjoyable and very informative.

Our senior players.
How many make it in to a top 4 team?
How many will retire or should get moved on?

Over 200 games. Walker, Sloane, Laird, Smith.
150-200 games. None.
100-150 games. Crouch, Keays, Dawson, O'Brien, Murphy.
50-100 games. Milera, Fogarty, Jones, Rankine, McHenry, Butts, Schoenberg, Sholl.
The real problem is that 50-100 games group.

Guys who have been given huge amounts of opportunities under Nicks.

The problem is with the exception of Rankine, this entire group is rubbish. Jones and Fog play the odd good game but are more of a tease than anything. The others should have been delisted already.

Where will the Book of Neil go though?

Pedlar for McHenry is just obvious
Crouch for Laird (Laird sub and Sholl out)
Toby Murray for ROB, don’t care how that happens, maybe dress him up like ROB or something

Unfortunately, tonight was the end of Brayden Cook’s crows career. I’ve been all for him being given a go, and his skills are sublime, but he just doesn’t try hard enough. Simple as that. Luke Jericho. Lewis Johnston. And now Brayden Cook. Bye.

Laird offers absolutely nothing. He doesn’t even win clearances anymore (13 players had more clearances than Laird tonight). His kicks inside 50 are diabolical. His handballs create nothing. Should not be in the team, it’s not even debatable.

Brodie Smith is a complete and utter mess. He has absolutely no idea what he’s doing. None. Mentally shot. Elevating him to the leadership group was bizarre and he’s not only not up to that title, but he’s not up to being an AFL footballer. Career over.

McHenry is an embarrassment to the club. The fact that he was selected in the starting 22 tonight after his worst on ground disgrace last week should be all the evidence anyone needs that Nicks and co have no idea what they’re doing.

Sholl’s missed tackle just outside 50 for Essendon in the 4th quarter summed up his entire career. Why on earth do we ever pick him?

Out:
Berry (inj), Cook, Smith, McHenry, Sholl (none of those 4 omissions should ever play for the club again)

In:
Crouch, Dowling, Curtin, Taylor, Pedlar

Sub:
Pedlar

I haven’t seen to much of Curtin but surely he’s better then Smith ATM, can we turn him into the running half back now before he moves into the midfield. Due to his height and running ability, he will fit in perfectly. Smith was the worst player last night and provided nothing except high ball which went to the opposition.

Anyone is better than Smith now, the guy can't run so does semi turn on the spot to get tackle. He was lucky he didn't got caught HTB a few time at the most important part of the ground.

What you suggest makes sense as the season is shot so lets get our better youngsters in and just play them this year and ride whatever highs and lows happen as its all about building for next year now and hopefully a new coach halfway through this year to take them forward

I don't rate Strachan, so until we draft a better ruck, I'll just have to live with ROB
No, we can't just reward his poor performances.

If nothing else so ROB gets the fire in the belly again by being dropped.

It's sets a poor culture when players know they won't be dropped for regular poor performances.

That's why we are in this position.

Smith has been poor most of the year & now injured... yet we still play him.

Hinge was horrible in 1st couple of games yet we kept playing him.

McHenry has one of the worst games on record so we reward him with another game which he was still horrible.

Meanwhile we have young players like Dowling who are performing in the sanfl thinking wtf is going on with selection criteria...

Hinge needed to be backed in and did respond very well last week.

Fortunately he has come good.

Smith hasn't & is injured yet we still pick him.

The selectors are deadset morons!

For this reason & no idea game plan there is no light at the end of the tunnel under Nicks.

I have seen enough.

I originally would have gone that way, but Dawson playing his best game of the season the moment Crouch is out doesn't entirely feel like a coincidence. And at this point, I'd rather just play younger players so we can get a look at them - we're not contending for finals at this point anyway.
