With Gardiner and Doedee down a key defender is probably needed just for depth purposes. If Kye Turner from Port Melbourne was injury free then he’d be a good pick up.

Also I really like the look of Jack Riding from Werribee for a forward/ wing option that’s ready to go. He can play wing or front half. Can alternate with guys like Lohmann, Sharp and Reville. Give Fletcher more mid minutes as the season progresses.

Yep, my thinking was along the lines of current depth players moving out so the list spot opens up anyway. It may happen either in the form of delistings or retirements or players choosing to leave. Rather than replacing them with late draft picks (after all our first/second round picks get used up for points), I'm thinking we could get 4 mature agers now who have potential.
History says the depth and quality isn’t there for so many picks in the MSD.

It’s not like most of the draftees are actually National Draft quality kids or mature age players.

I still don't think we can afford to take four at the MSD because it'd require us to delist that many players to accommodate them past the end of the season. And that's before the delistings we need to make to create space for draft picks.

How many out of contract players can we reasonably delist? Lyons, Lane, Prior, Madden, Joyce, and maybe Michael and Lester in order to redraft them? That's only seven slots available at most. If we use four of them at the MSD, there's only three for getting picks in to match Levi and Marshall. Way too few IMO.

The better strategy would be taking two players at the MSD, leaving 3-5 picks available for matching at the national draft. We can always sign mature age players at the national or rookie drafts to pad out the list if they haven't been taken prior to that.

I think some are over rating the mid season draft.
The likelihood of picking up 1 player that is AFL quality is highly unlikely, let alone 4.

But if you take 4 you have more chance of getting 1

Out of interest has there actually been any success stories from players taken in the MSD? I’d be reluctant to take more than 2, even with our depth thinning out due to injuries.

Jai Newcombe, John Noble and Marlion Pickett are probably the most notable.

Certainly not if they require 18 month contracts and take up 4 list spots next year just for the sake of it.

Don't they still get six months as a default, and teams can offer 18? Or has the default changed?

I think it is more about managers asking for 18months or nothing.
Especially is they have to travel interstate.

J Lohmann? Like for like McCarthy. He’s here already so no need to relocate him. Smart one touch player. Seems more physically developed than Kai. I guess he is the older brother. Does anyone know his back story?
Older brother born in 2000. Has a way to go for picked up IMO but has clean hands and makes good decisions on the field (extremely important for the AFL level).

Interesting that his mother wanted them to play together.

I’d be happy to put 2 of our VFL top ups on the rookie list for 6 months. Maybe even 1 of our of age academy kids.

But they have to show something to earn an extension beyond the end of the season.

I think if they know they needed to impress you they’d perform better Briztoon. I know I would.

Too early for the Ben Thomas? Looks good anywhere near goal.

Player nominates 6 or 18 months, or “other” terms as Newcombe did.

Ballenden threw his name in last year, and nominated other terms.
That's what I thought (didn't know about "other" though).

The guys nominating 18 months are the ones more comfortable in being picked up. Given we're potentially taking a few options, I think we're going to have to dig into more speculative options so I don't think assuming we're going to be locked into 18 month contracts for all of them is fair - it's quite unlikely.

I think it's a little cruel to get someone to move interstate just for 6 months with little prospect of staying on. But hey, they're free to nominate longer terms if they want I guess.

Of course, we could draft players who are already in Queensland and don't need to move. Some very good players at Southport but unfortunately after the repeated fights our players got into with them, I can't imagine recruiting any Southport players would help club morale or culture.

Ultimately it's their call - they don't need to make it. Given we're looking at taking four in the MSD, at least #3 and #4 are going to be fairly marginal options so I don't mind giving them a six month taste of the AFL environment as a fair trade with inside track for sticking around if they manage it.

I'm sure we'd ask any players we'd potentially draft what their thoughts are regarding a 6 month move to Brisbane. Like you said, it's up to them what terms they nominate.
