Autopsy Round 10, 2024: Hawks get pipped by Power

Gave it a day before comment-Extremely excited about our future. Another pre-season or 2 and 20-30 games under the belt and I reckon I will be spending a lot of Friday nights at the 'G' watching us obliterate teams. As a side note, if someone kicks 5 goals FFFS don't shift them to the backline. Deserved an extra F.

Just watched the last 2 minutes again and I still can't believe we lost, such a crazy finish!

The half glass full tells me that we will take away more from that loss. Saints nearly pipped us at the finish line last week too don't forget!

A few key positives I took out of the game:
  • we were 40+ points up against one of the better teams in the comp
  • Dimma kicking 5 goals
  • Day's best game of 2024
  • CJ getting through unscathed
  • Frost continuing his blinder of a year
Let's hope that fire continues burning and we come out strong vs Lions!

Was a devastating loss at the ground. My 10 yo daughter in particular was shattered. She was nearly ready to bee-line the boundary to try and get a winners footy.

Felt the last few mins after McKenzie's goal in the 3rd was where the rot started- we should have been 6 goals + clear at 3/4 time, but let them get a couple of pretty easy ones (and lucky Marshall shanked another).

Actually think the rain hindered us- we were much cleaner than Port in the drier conditions.

We were absolutely gassed at the end. Reckon the last quarter went for 34 mins in actual time.

Our sub choices all year have been baffling.

Phillips and Dear- if you told me those 2 were starting spine and we pushed Port to a point at the start of the year I'd have had you sent to the asylum. Both did really well.

Lets see how we react v Brissy. They play Marvel really well so expect we'll have our work cut out.

Said at 3 quarter time we needed 2 more scoring shots to ice the game. We didn’t even try for 1.

The one we did get should have been from the goal line. Aliir clearly booted the ball away well after the free was paid. We got pinged literally a minute or 2 before for the exact same thing.

Still if CMac drills the goal all is well.

Breust will be the first to admit he had an absolute mare but clearly he just struggled to adapt coming in cold to what were very slippery conditions. So very harsh/embarasssing/disrespectful for supporters to say he's cooked.
I don't think we are basing our views just on this one game. He's looked off the pace pretty much the whole year.

His game was always based on having the quick burst of speed/power to break a tackle or rove a pack and now he has lost it and is getting bought down often you can see him second guessing what to do which is never a good sign.

Like Gunners he still has the tricks and game sense to bob up here and there with a good performance but I'm not sure we can carry both of them going forward.

You are right that we shouldn't say he is cooked, that is disrespectful but eventually father time catches up with all players.

Port was always going to push numbers forward to try and get back into the game the fact we only could get 1 shot on goal shows we have a lot more work to do to take advantage of that.

There was another one in the last where Aliir got caught HTB, it spilt to Butters, he got caught HTB and it was play on.

In any event, shouldn't have put ourselves in a position where umpiring decisions mattered.

After a sleeplessness night going through several parts of the game where we could have done better. Could have kicked the goal that won it. I have woken up this morning still down on that result. To be expected However...

What a game. We came out with right intent and endevour. So many things to like

  • Our backline for the most part held up pretty well given the inexperience down there. In fact, our defensive intent all over the ground was first rate.
  • A great debut by Easy. I must admit he did better than I thought he would.
  • Frosty was enormous nearly won the game for us in that last qtr
  • Seamus played a great game.
  • Our pressure throughout that game was excellent we had nothing left to give
  • Dear could have won that game of his own boot. A real game changer in the making. Ran out of petrol tickets by the end of the game.
  • Will Day is back. The boys got around him. Would have been a huge roar at the MCG had he kicked that goal there.
  • Dimma showing again he can be a real swingman for us
  • Meek continued his great form this season. I would say the pivotal move was getting Dixon in the ruck for them as it limited his influence as he started to tire.
  • Mass another great game.
What has been really impressive about the team is their ability to now grind in game change the way they are playing to suit the conditions the time in the game. We are not there yet but we are definitely gaining valuable experience. So much improvement from the start of the season.

The self-belief is increasing after each game. Lots of improvement to come in the form of players coming back in and CJ getting fitter. Plenty to be proud off and plenty of positives and alas 5 to 10 seconds away from a famous victory. Not to be what do we do? We do it the "Hard way"

The coaches can't win in a loss like that.
Imagine the angst of they DIDN'T move players behind the ball !!!
Well yes, I don't think a coach can 'win' when their side gives up a 41 point lead

Like a number of the players, he got stuff wrong in the last quarter and we lost what looked to be an unloseable game. The coach has to wear some of that, as any coach would if their side gave up that sort of a lead, including moving a guy with 5 goals to the backline for the final quarter. Or releasing the shackles from Butters, the best footballer either side has, who proceeded to go ballistic. He made some major moves against what had worked for 3 quarters and got them wrong.

Doesn't mean he and the players did not do a lot right for 3/4 of the game. They did. It was an excellent performance for 3 quarters. As good as the side has produced in a long time. But a dire performance in the fourth.

Bruest got the ball 6 times and had 5 turnovers. Were going to have to be very selective on when to play him and Gunners, they're both absolutely cooked. I would rotate them in the side for their experience and injuries aside they should be the ones subbed out of most games.
They can’t play any more. Hawks dominated the first three quarters with manic intensity from players who are either in the prime or kids. It is not much of a surprise that the kids cannot sustain 4 quarters. Breust and Gunston do not add to that energy.

Leigh Matthews summed it up perfectly on Footy Furnace last night. He explained the moment you elect to push a player back into defence, you are now playing the game in your back half. He claimed the best way to protect a lead is to have the ball in your forward line where the opposition can't score. Makes perfect sense to me.
The problem was that we couldn’t win a contested ball to get the ball forward.

Even the few we did win it was a near immediate turnover and port were attacking again.

Had we been able to win or at least halve those contests up the ground the team wouldn’t have looked anywhere near as defensive.

Hardwick went back because we needed an experienced defender back and CJ who is a defender was subbed off for Breust who is a forward

Day probably ran to the goal square as he could see the dire situation and wanted to help out the defence - he also spent the first two years at the club playing off half back

Don't take this the wrong way but you are an awful ******* of a poster who doesn't even go for the Hawks so heck off back to your own board you campaigner
That's still on the coaches who selected Jiath and Bruest. Jiath had no injury but I assume was always planned to sub out. Why then did we not select Bailey Macdonald as sub? Why a guy who can only play forward when we knew we were subbing off a defender.

And Jiath by the way, is a winger. He should have been selected to play Wing, probably only playing defence because sicily and scrimshaw were out.

I hear you. I'm from Adelaide as well, and over the years have had a gutful of being beaten by 1 point by Port Adelaide. It took me awhile to fathom why yesterday's loss hit me worse than some others, but this is it. I couldn't see any positives, all I saw is bloody Port Adelaide coming from well behind and beating my team once again.

Like many Hawks fans just want to beat the likes of Carlton, Essendon, Collingwood, etc, the team I want to beat more than anyone else is Port Adelaide. Yesterday's loss really hurts.

Unless you've lived in Adelaide it's hard for others to fully understand what living in a one team/later two-team is like and
how you want nothing more than to beat them over all other teams. In saying that though I'm sure other interstaters have a fair idea although up here it isn't as bad considering NRL tends to dominate discussions.

I haven't lived in Adelaide for 20 years now (still go back regulary however) so my hate for both the Crows and Port Adelaide has subsided a bit over the years, but I know it's there bubbling under the surface and comes out everytime we play them. Beating them means everything, losing to them hurts. I should apologise to my neighbours because when Port kicked that last goal I yelled the F and the C word, something I'm not proud of but emotion got the better of me.

Bucks saying that Amon is not a defender.

Time to put him on a wing once Scrim and Sic are back this week.
Something many of us on here having been banging on about all year.

Top 3 for hardest loss to cop alongside the 2012 GF and Hawkins after the siren in the same year.

Genuinely gutted and getting myself to work this morning with a positive attitude was nearly impossible.

For the mental health I think I'm going to plan a day trip with the family on Sunday at 1pm and watch the replay if we can knock off the Lions.

The one positive I guess I can take out of it is that I wouldn't care so much if I didn't believe the win would mean so much. We're almost back to the point where every week counts, which means the rebuild has entered its next phase.
