Thoughts on Kings return?

Does King ever get a touch which isn't a simple, flat-footed one-two? They are 'nothing' disposals.

Exactly.

His ruckwork was good, not great, but I didn't think he gave us anything around the ground that Blake couldn't have done.

Mick Turner had a good point on King. When he gets the ball he always wants to kick it,where as the way we've played with Ottens and Blake it's handballing that's the option.

Could have fooled me.

I gotta say guys, that was one hilarious mark. At least he got something out of his return back, even if it is short-lived.

A solid game I would give him 6.5/10.

He did nothing really wrong and generally won in the ruck and did his job. All in all he was good.

One play I was a little disappointed with was when Hunt kicked the ball to King on a lead and his opponent ran straight past him. Definitely lacks a bit of pace.

King was doing a lot more 1percenters than he had been previously - putting his big body on the line and shepharding the midfielders. His 1-2s labelled as 'nothing possession's' by a previous poster are all that we require from him... as well as the odd mark over a goal umpire. We've got guys like Monica to be doing the running. Obviously wasn't his best game ever, but considering that he has been out for so long, and that he can walk in to the best team in the country and do what he did means that in my book he deserves another game.

Perhaps next week Blake will have the flu or something? I can see Ottens/King sharing the duties next week.

I too think he passed the test today. I would like to see how he goes against a stronger ruck division like the Roos, Lions or Power. I'd expect another good game against Adelaide's weak ruck division next week.

Thompson also reserved some praise for former captain Steven King, who made his long-awaited return to football since undergoing arthroscopic surgery in May.
"I thought it was a good game first up," Thompson said. "He hasn't played for a while and he got a bit of the ball, helped us win a few stoppages. He had the same pre-game focus as everybody else. That was to respect the game and play to the standard of footy that we've all been playing to, and that's just doing the basics really, really well."

Good enough for the coach = Good enough for me.

I'll run with this while we are winning. Thought King was OK without really starring. It was a game riddled with mistakes - so many poor decisions in the forward line staggered me. The Crows will pounce on us if we do this again - Richmond seemed unable to cash in on these fortunately.

i wld give him another couple of wks b4 making my mind up. he was never going 2 star against the tigs as he hasnt played a senior game in bloody ages. and who said he didnt take contested marks?! that 1 over the goal ump was a great contested mark! i reckon u cld plonk him in the goal square and he wld go ok as well. i remember back in '00, '01,'02 when we rested him he wld go 2 full fwd and went ok there.

Like most on this thread I'd probably give him a 5/10. When he picked up his first possie, he looked terribly slow. I thought to myself, oh no here we go.

He did improve though, some nice effective taps during the game. Used his weight a bit, still he did somethings on the average side, however you have to put up with that considering he has only played 3 games this year.

The lack of a spoil and having Richo take a mark over him was poor play, the mark over the goal umpire was just too funny. I think that the bad position of the umpire then King just looking at the ball and taking the 'contested' mark was hilarious.

Can that mark be but down as a 'contested' grab ? Probably his one and only for a long time.

I thought he was serviceable yesterday. Only real negative I saw was when he attempted to pass to SJ in the pocket rather than taking the responsibility of having a shot himself. What made matters worse was the Tigers kicked a goal down the other end. Will be better for the run though.

what about when he ran into the pack with his back to the ball??

whoever the richmond players were they were unlucky to not be kicking for goal after that.

he was okay but is still behind ottens and blake.

the big question is how will we go with 3 ruckman in the side? ottens will be wasted in the forward line to accomodate king.

There's no way that his mark over the umpire could be considered a 'contested' grab... simply because the umpire wasn't trying to take the mark, therefore he wasn't 'contesting'. All he managed to do was be a step ladder.
If King had dropped it, I would have dropped him like a sack of spuds, because that's the easiest mark you'll ever get a chance to take with anyone else in the vicinity of the ball.

And agree about the time he was running back into the pack. Should have been a free kick Richmonds way, which probably would have been a goal. it was things like that in his game that made me a little concerned.

Well I'm completely baffled.

Kingy came in and performed even better than I'd expected for his return game. Then Blakey tosses a very welcome spanner in the works by getting his competitive juices all stirred up, playing the greatest game of his burgeoning career. Wearing out? He's just getting started.

Rest Blake? Not after the confidence he gained from that match.
Rest Mooney? But how badly is he shin affecting him?
Drop King? I still believe he'll prove a better option than Blake come finals.
Play West and let Blake and King battle it out against the Bullants?
I wish we had a better form guide.

Take heed, BigFoots; tommy-sauce squirt bottles at 10 feet may yet decide this.

If King does not play in the next couple of games it will be the end of his career.

Blake will continue to improve
I remember reading an article by our coach which stated that they felt Blake would develop into a good forward option, alternating between the forward line and the ruck. He showed glimpses of this last week

If King does play on I feel we will be too top heavy with 3 ruckman
It is not fair to drop Blake after the year that he has had.

King is of no benefit in the seconds as he will hinder West's progress

Having said that he is good insurance this year just in case we cop an injury to our other 2 ruckman

Re: Steven King.

His stats;
Kicks - 3
Handballs - 4
Marks - 0
Possessions - 7
Hit Outs -15
Tackles - 4
Frees For - 2
Frees Against - 3
Goals - 0
Behinds - 0

Next week should be...
In: Blake
Out: King... FOREVER!

Re: Steven King.

You're kidding me, right?

???????

Do you think Byrnes should be in the team instead of Varcoe? Lets face facts, one of them will need to go when Chapman returns.

I was all for Byrnes being in the side after the last 2 weeks, but based on todays performance, Varcoes value to the team is MUCH more than Byrnes.
