Really don't understand this logic.

He has a right to earn income. He's doing a job for an employer. Swans aren't his employers anymore. It's no different to Jude being in the commentary box saying whatever our opponent needs to do to try and win the game.

It's only damaging if you believe opposition coaches are acquiring their intel and strategy on the Swans from... an online news site. I know you know enough about the sport to know that that just isn't the case.
I know that all clubs are looking at us , but there might be something they can use out of it . Jeff White on X has had a crack at it as well . Just found it strange that he did it and personally i don't have to like it

Good on them , hype the pies all they like. I think they are cooked
I've thought since 2022 that we are way, way better than the pies. 2023 was the luckiest run I've ever seen. When they beat us we had our entire backline out and we still stayed with them for the entire game. I think if we meet them in a Grand Final we'll absolutely obliterate them, home ground or not. We just match up well on them.

I thought the Bulldogs gave us a bit of a bath in the midfield, so did Freo. Think there would've been more to be gleamed from those performances if you were an opposition coach than from Brandon Jack at the pub or Jeff White from X.

Brandon Jack doesn't work for Sydney he is just doing his job , you don't have to like it, but we don't have to like you complaining about it do we?

please tell me you meant gleaned

If brandon jacks article as a spectator and journo can better analyse our mid setup better than full time oppo coaches then i think we’ll walk the flag in 😂

And if thats all it took to stop our flag run then we alao have bigger problems

I bet Adam Kingsley was pacing the office with no clue how to approach this week until he saw the article.

Good on Jack and White for raising interesting points for folks to consider and debate.

Please, can we look at their comments on their merits rather than go down some “personality” dry gulch.

Matthew Nicks is a traitor as well. I happen to know that the Crows have been paying him to analyse Swans games and come up with a strategy to beat us.

Having said that, I think they are asking for their money back.

I read the Brandon Jack article on CODE. It's no secret I am a midfield nuffy (NOT an expert, as I have been accused of considering myself to be!!), so I absolutely loved it. He added no hyperbole and paid everyone their dues, and pretty much just analysed a bunch of different scenarios from the Geelong & Adelaide games, explained how our mids set up in them, and how he would try to prevent those scenarios if he were an opposition coach.

I'll try to summarise it as best as I can for those who don't have CODE:

Starts by going through the personnel and introduces them with one sentence: Heeney ("Main hit-to at stoppages"), Warner ("Starts more defensive side at stoppages and runs through"), Gulden ("Works back hard"), Rowbottom ("Disciplined, selfless"), Grundy ("Full 360-degree ruckman"), Papley ("will usually sweep at centre bounces") & Adams ("will let you get sucked into the contest")

Describes our strengths as ruck dominance & pro-active mids (mentions how formerly reactive we were), balanced & clearly defined roles, and multiple weapons at forward 50 stoppages.

Describes our weaknesses as "can get caught running forward and leaving the stoppage early", susceptible to elite opposition pressure, our slow starts & lapses in games (this is nothing new), and we become predictable when Grundy's out.

He then starts analysing the various examples of our set-ups, and goes on to offer tactics he'd deploy to hurt us. Hard to quote them here as he's gone so in-depth but if there's two constant themes throughout it would be: Stop Heeney from being the hit-to by blocking his run at the ball, and try to take Rowbottom where you want him at the contest, not where the Swans want him. Because Heeney's the "focal point" you need to try and make the ball drop where he is not. And because Rowbottom is the "anchor" you need to try and take him towards the other mids so he can't hold firm and keep the space for them.

(Jack does note multiple times that even in doing the above, you're likely opening up another bit of space for an alternative mid like a "sweeper" like Adams to get to the ball instead, but at least then it's not the Swans "dictating the terms.")

He also makes an interesting note that Grundy seems to rarely tap over his head, so whichever way his body is facing is where the ball will go.

That's about the best I can do folks. Hopefully someone can find a way to get around the paywall and share it, was a really interesting read. (Well at least I thought so.)

Thanks for this. All the players running through there are vital but imo the most vital is Grundy. Aside from the smart tap work tailored to our set ups he is a contested and tackling beast in his own right.

He is not a great mark or goal kicking ruck but I for don’t care. He is bloody cluey and seems to have developed a terrific understanding with other players and esp the mids..

Yup. He's a very smart player and a good leader, especially of his midfield group. I just realised that's exactly what you said. 🤦

The coaches that have added intellectual capital to the methodology (and realistically I reckon they have developed the method in an iterative manner with those who play there) deserve a lot of credit.

The ability of Cox, Horse and others to convey the methodology to our backs and forwards (as well as our Ressies) is intrinsic to the team to deliver on systems footy that still incorporates the flair of our players.

Never rated him as a player or person, or both?

as a person!?!
from what i've read about him, and by him, he's a very intelligent, thoughtful and caring young man with a lot more talents than just being a footballer ...
and while you might dismiss him as a footballer, he did actually make it to senior afl level ... he was no star, but that still puts him ahead of about 98% of the population

Yes, exactly my thoughts. Seems a smart, thoughtful and empathetic guy.

Would never have a crack at someone's footballing ability who has made it to AFL level.

Was just curious as to the above poster's meaning of not "rating" him.

I would rather have a yarn, scone and a cuppa with Jack or Luke Ablett than people like Kane, Clarkson etc.

It's been said many times, but if you get the chance, read his autobiography "28". Every year I give away dozens of books from my bookshelf, but that one always remains with me. He is a very good human being who writes about an incredibly raw period of his life.
Right up there with the Boy's Club to help understand our game.

I agree with that but he's also very flawed as he painfully exposes in his book. He's provided plenty of ammunition for someone who wants to judge his character harshly. I'm a fan because it is a human and relatable struggle and he's obviously striving to do his best (and, as you wrote, he's talented in many dimensions).
