Our next senior assistant

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Someone who hasn't been associated with Port in any way in the past 12 years and honestly probably never because we need new ideas. Someone from a successful club in the last 12 years. Someone currently in a line manager role at a performing club.

Daniel Giansiracusa
James Rahilly
Ashley Hansen
Jaymie Graham
Dean Cox

Put out the feelers, make sure its a considerable salary bump from a line coaching role, and see what happens.

We should bring in Andrew Mackie and make him fix what he created.

How about Dean Cox, bring some of the Sydney culture that Kochie is keen on.

You'll take Jacob Surjan and like it.

On a serious note, I don’t know who our assistants should be (haven’t paid enough attention to who other clubs have on their staff). But, our entire current coaching group (except Carr if he gets the senior coach role) should not be considered.

Some non negotiable attributes of our coaching group should be:

  • tactical brain
  • cool under pressure
  • ruthless desire to win that they can instill in the players
  • always willing to listen to what the rest of the coaching group has to say - no dickheads who think their way is always right

You can have your Leigh Tudor and me Don Pyke 😂
Director of Footy Pyke
Head Coach …..
Senior Assistant Leigh Tudor

Corey Enright.

Former SA so could have some links here.

No links to Port so no risk of being infected.

Huge part of winning culture at Geelong.

Done a good job as defence coach at the Saints, plus has learnt under Lyon.
As much as I hate Geelong players, they've clearly got a great culture which has helped fuel their success. Wouldn't mind poaching someone from there.

In the past hasn't Dean cox said he's happy at Sydney & would like to stay?

If we are all in on Carr, surely there are plans to put some better people around him, because our current coaching team is terrible.

You think about who we've lost in recent years and who we've replaced them with, it's a joke. Initially, it was blamed on covid but it's like we've gone back to the days of Laidley on Skype and the IT guy as our assistants.

Recently we've lost Voss, Schofield, Bassett, Lade and Montgomery and replaced with Carr, Goldsack and Luke Kelly.

It's like they've halved their expenditure in the coaching department and thought no one would notice.

Getting ready for a broom, surely.

No point having a 'senior assistant' who hasn't been a senior coach themselves. So no to Schofield and Enright. Probably no to Dew as well, coaching the SUNS barely counts.

Nathan Buckley would be perfect if you could convince him to do it, but not sure why he'd leave his cushy Melbourne media gigs to come to Adelaide and not even get a senior coaching gig out of it*

*P.S. I'd still happily give him the senior coaching gig
Didn't Buckley say in the past he'd like to be a line coach somewhere?

Perhaps I missed something. Why are we getting Carr whether we like it or not?

Unless there is an ironclad succession plan that I am unaware of I would be scouring the country and the top job goes to the best applicant. We have a decent list, a midfield to die for and the right coach who would instill the right culture is a priority. Even if they were only here for 3 years and there was a succession plan in place, be it Carr or not.

Its unlikely I know but a Roos or a Roos type. I would give it to Buckley even though he wouldn't come here. A coach like that would attract players, instil some resiliency and hopefully formulate a real gameplan that has some flexibility to it.

Barring that the job goes to the next best applicant.

I can't see Choco coming back under the current administration as just a player development manager. He seems pretty settled in Melbourne. I would have him back in that role. I think Corey Enright would be a great choice. He might also be able to cobble together a decent defense.

If Carr does get the job I would certainly like to see someone with outside experience come in as the senior assistant. Doesn't have to be a Port player. I'd be surprised it we can get a senior assistant who has been a senior coach though. Realistically, who would come here for a senior assistant role?

Buckley would certainly take the senior coaching gig, has played for Port & would be nuts if he didn’t.

This is the crux of our issue. At the same time our CEO was rolling out a X premierships in Y years mantra, he was overseeing the gutting of our footy department. Until that is addressed it doens't matter who we have as head coach.

Most recently, Chad and Goldsack had no meaninful credentials for the rolle they were in - Chad I would have happily had as magpies coach (why this went to Hartlett is beyond me), or runner, but not an AFL forwards coach. Tyson is following on from two very good defensive coaches (when it comes to strategy) in Bassett and Monty, what had we seen that suggested he was of this ilk.

Ultimately, from my observations, Ken is a relationship coach - not a tactical coach, he has performed best when aired with some tactical strength in the box. Im not sure where Josh sits in that space yet, so if we have locked him in, we had better hope we ha ve also made soem calls on what gaps need filling in the balance of the group.

Nigel Lappin has been a Geelong Assistant for 16 years. He currently heads up their development program. I wonder if he has aspirations to coach in his own right, has served a similar apprenticeship to McCrae.

Well he wouldn't make any more money than he currently does I don't think. He has lived in Victoria ever since being traded to Collingwood. I don't know that he has ever really shown any allegiance to Port at all. He just happened to play for us when he got drafted. I think the only thing that would take him here would be to win that elusive premiership.

Do we really need another development coach? I'd like to a coach with tactical and gameday nous for a change. Get a development coach to fill a development role.

Clearly we need new assistant coaches too. Our defensive line is a mess and I am not sure our forward line is looking that great either. You can argue whether we have the cattle or not, neither lines are playing to their potential. I give the midfield a little slack because Soldo is injured, and our top line midfielders are young.

If he has a burning desire to perhaps win a premiership, then he just may.
