And if the bid is pick 18? Means the pick can’t be matched. Then trade pick 19 and something for pick 18
So the AFL fix the problem by making teams pay with pick 41,42,56 and 70.Sydney got heeney that way. He was bid on early and they just used pick 18. It's why the system was overhauled in the first place

One every 10 picks at least. Last year the first round had 29 picks. West Coast Pick 19 was pushed out to pick 30. When the draft is built around ladder position we can't have a team that finished last have their second pick slide 11 places.Could Gold Coast have got their 3 first round academy picks if they had to find 3 first rounders to pay for them?
We need to limit their access somehow from that happening again. Absolute farce.
Limit it to 1 in the first 40 or something similar.
You could use a future first. What if your first rounder is pick 1? The simplicity of some of the ideas sound nice but in reality, don’t work.
Disproportionately punishes teams lower down the ladder having a f/s or academy pick while still having it be really easy for top teams to match an early pick. You could use a future first.
e.g. you've used pick 6 and then someone bids on your father son prospect at pick 7. If you want him, you use your future first.
If applied to academy picks, then GC wouldn't be able to get 3 guys in the top 10. They'd only get 2 at most unless they had traded in additional first round picks
There would have to be some adjustments but basically if you have a first round pick and the player is around that range just draft them if you really want them. And if the bid is pick 18? Means the pick can’t be matched.
Needing a first round pick to match a first round bid won’t work. It’s easy to match early bids but becomes harder as the first round goes on.
If they just fixed the points curve it would solve every issue.
Yes. Could have split pick 4 and used a future first.Could Gold Coast have got their 3 first round academy picks if they had to find 3 first rounders to pay for them?

I started this thread mid last year.Maybe we need a separate thread for this discussion as it’s really got nothing to do with this thread
I started this thread mid last year.
News - AFL overhauls Academy and FS bid matching, discussing draft lockout
A lot of discussion understandably so about the rort that are academies and father son drafting. A thread to take that out of other draft watchers threads and discuss what changes should occur to make drafting more equitable.www.bigfooty.com
If Izzy or any other Cats player got land at a different price to Joe blow that purchased a block next door surely that has to be investigated by the AFL as it’s rorting the system. Players are getting a financial benefit outside of the clubs cap …… it’s no different to the way Carltank use to pay its players in brown paper bags!Loose lips Izzy Smith even mentioned on radio when he went to Cats the “land deals”, as part of his decision to leave, then had an instagram story about a month later looking for architects who specialised in regional developments.

Worked for Darren Jarman back in the day, so why not?Can a club get into trouble these days by providing a job for a players partner and putting that person on a 300k salary?
Wasn’t Judd’s mum a tea lady at Visy on $150k …… wonder how many cups she actually served! Can a club get into trouble these days by providing a job for a players partner and putting that person on a 300k salary?
