Great move

AFL clubs over east rely on gamblers to keep them afloat. Freo don't have that luxury. Woodside are a big financial backing and have helped fund Freo's ambitions to be a club with some if the best facilities in the AFL

It’s a little bit more complicated than that. I’m not a huge fan of the whataboutism of “well other clubs do worse things so” but I acknowledge the point.

I also acknowledge that Woodside or their money has allowed for many positive programs both in the club and the wider community. I’m also not suggesting that we drop Woodside immediately as that’s simply not practical.

I just think it’s important to look out for sportswashing and to keep holding Woodside to account and not just give them a free pass because they support our Dockers.

Would love to know what tax strategies they employ. $1.7m up front sounds great on paper but not when you’re giving a ridiculous chunk of that to Uncle Albo.

Professionals have income averaging

So 1.7 one year and 500k the next gets averaged

It's a bit more technical obviously but yeah

The top tax bracket is 45% of every dollar over 190K. Therefore as long as the spreading out has the minimum year above that they aren't saving any tax unless rules change, just paying it at different times. It is hard to move earnings or get extra deductions when you are a professional athlete that everyone knows about.

Even if he becomes a 100/200m gold medallist, there would be a number of people that I doubt he gets anywhere near from golf, tennis, NBA, F1, soccer. Mailata in NFL. Greg Norman is worth US$400 million. Dwarfs what Usain Bolt would be worth.
