You’d think that if it was anything remotely serious a mainstream media outlet would have been all over it by now.
That was my logic, but I seem to have rotten luck with those sorts of logic leaps so thought better of it.

I always had the suspicion that with Membrey coming into the side, we’d most likely shift away from the two ruck set up

Obviously nothing is confirmed but both McStay and Frampton with the ruck group alludes to what I guessed being that Cameron plays mostly through the middle with periods of floating back or forward depending. But McStay taking forward line hit outs and Frampton taking backline hit outs.

But we’ll see I guess. Either way, more flexibility is never a bad thing
Tom Hawkins took forward line ruck contests for years for Geelong, and that worked for them.
No reason it can't work for us as well.

Preseason training: Friday January 31.

9:30am-12:30pm.

Big session this morning, one I thought I was gonna be late for. Trains being 30 mins delayed, but thankfully I did get there before 9:30, and the boys hadn't came out yet.

Everyone bar Jordy was in attendance in some form.

The rehab group:

  • Reef - He was out a lot longer than Wednesday. He did a fair bit of running and agility work, and then went on the bike out by the entrance to the glasshouse. Hopefully ramps it up on Monday.

  • WHE - Not sure what's his issue is, but must have some sort of niggle as he only completed a running session this morning.

  • Mitchell - Did some running, not at full pace, but slowly. It'll be a slow process for him. He said he hopes to ramp up the running in the next 3 or so weeks. I don't expect he'll be into footy drills until March.

  • Johnson - While he did complete most of the session, toward the end of the session when the boys were doing full ground match sim, he did some running off to the side.

  • Harrison - Nothing has changed. He's continuing his high speed running as he goes through his rehab.

+ Sullivan is back in full training.

While they did some fundamental drills with ball handling in groups around the group, plus other drills. It was the match senarios and full ground match sim I was more interested in.

It was Mcguane's last session before he heads back to school on Monday, and he did very well. In the drills, just gets involved, evades and has a really high IQ on where he needs to be.
He also completed part of the match sim where they used him a few different positions, half forward, half back, wing.
Craft to the draft people want me to compile some footage they are gonna put on their insta, so I'll work on that later.

During match sim it did appear to be best forwards v best defenders. Of course minus Mcstay who had gone off earlier in the morning so he didn't participate in this, so lets take that into consideration.
Another incident was a clash between parker and demattia, with the latter coming off second best. He went off the ground and didn't come back, but hopefully he's okay. Parker, though continued on.

Match sim.

White forwards: Checkers. Membrey. Schultz. Bobby. Jamie. Beau.
Black Defenders: Moore. Maynard. Howe. IQ. Houston. Josh.

Midfield was:
Sidey and Lippa on the wings (in white), Markov and one of the vfl players (wearing #33) in black.
Pendes, Allan, Long (black)
Nick, Crisp, Perryman (white)

Cox and DC rucked on either side. They swapped the rucks around each quarter. In the first half, Cox and DC were out there, and the 2nd half, Steene and Smit were on the ground.

I need to see what this looks like if Mcstay and WHE were also participating.
And hopefully Reef can recover so we can see him in full ground match sim and get a sense the preferred defensive set up.

I thought Sullivan was pretty lively this morning, as he gets back into full training.
Fin performed well through the middle of the ground and at clearance/stoppage with quick hands.
Allan is starting to know how to use his body to his advantage at contests.
Parker seemed to be everywhere. I sometimes had to blink twice to think it was actually him, but he was very lively and very involved in chains of play up and down the ground. Zipping around.
Houston you can see what a lovely ball user he is, and how he sets up the attack from the defensive half, should be a real weapon for us.
There is no question marks on Nick. he completed everything, and didn't seem to be hampered by any foot issues. Ran like he never had it to begin with.
Cox and DC were both very strong in the air for both of their sides during match play, intercepting or marking the ball when need be.
Both Hayes and West had some very nice moments. The former with his decision making and kicking, pace up, and West with his marking. Took a few nice overhead marks against Glover and Dean through the arcs.

Two things are a certainty.

Josh D at half back.
Lippa and Sidey on the wings. I've seen enough evidence from multiple match sims to confirm this.
Just dont know how the forward/defence will structure up.
2 rucks v 1
reef v Frampton/Dean.

Sidebottom has all the tools to be a quality half forward/ forward pocket type player.
His goal nous is exceptional and can find the ball easily
Smooth left and right too …he should be playing more forward of centre this season

I agree with this. Sidebottom is our best front and square crumbed off the pack and only needs a split second to kick a goal off either foot.

Also, at his age, I doubt he has the speed and endurance to play permanently as a mid, either as wing or tagger.

Thanks Jen. From pies footy YouTube clips of training Perryman seemed to fitting in nicely with some fine kicking skills (if I had the right player) what is your impression of Perryman?
Seems to be flying under the radar with some pretty nifty footy skills is my impression.

Nice skills, very under the radar. Plays well without standing out. A WHE type.
If I didn't know his number, I'd forget he was out there lol

He has endurance, has never had speed, but it's time to put younger guys into the midfield.

You’d have to say Frampton is comfortably ahead of Dean, so it’s up to Reef to take it
