Hi all, thought I would share this 2025 list analysis video I found over the weekend. One for the stats lovers.
It's objective and uses data to show some areas that we know we need to improve (goal kicking mids, intercept marks).
Also keep in mind that it doesn't take into account positional changes (e.g. laird) or natural improvement/regression (e.g. Soligo/Walker).

To be fair it would be hard to take much out of North Melbourne match sim, as they’re only matched up against North Melbourne players

Goad was up against the second best ruck in the competition for 2024 and not only held his own but beat him in some aspects
Then when forward and kicked a goal and set another up
His athleticism combined with Kai rapid rate of improvement indicate he’ll be a star in 5 years or so

Well that certainly wasn't evident in the VFL games I watched last year.
I realise he was a 1st year player etc etc but he was godawful, not even competitive.
I watched those games out of interest for the future and the possibility he may want home at some point in the future...plus the fact the Crows certainly had keen interest by all reports, in fact I think we would have likely taken him with the pick we had after North which was eventually used on Charlie Edwards.

He wasn’t deserving of a game in the vfl last year
I thought, despite “big men taking time”, that it was a wasted pick.
But he’s come back a completely different player. He seems to be playing aggressively where last year he looked passive.
He got into a defender today after kicking a goal. He was tackling well, and finding the footy. A highlight was leading out from full forward, gathering below his knees for an over the shoulder handball to dursma for a goal.
Very exciting and should play afl this year

I think this shows how hard it is to use statistics properly, how easy it is to let a bunch of very flimsy assumptions slip through the narrative

Apologies if its already been posted/discussed but I just saw the article from last month that after FA and trade period we shot up to the quality 7th oldest list and 12 in games played.
Interesting to see if the jump in those 2 categories see the predicted on field success and consistency that we've been lacking in the Rebuild

We're the 8th oldest list, not 7th, but that's splitting hairs:

We have an average of 69.0 games per player. There are a whole bunch of teams in the 66.6 - 71.4 range, with a clear top-6 and a clear bottom-3 who are outside this range. We're no longer in that bottom bracket, which suggests that we should be competitive against most teams.
We've added 4 players who will, potentially, all be in our best 22 by the end of the season. That's a marked change from last year, where we had a net outflow of players from our best 22.
This, combined with the organic improvement from our youngsters, as they gain experience, will hopefully see us rebound in 2025 (after a fairly ordinary 2024).

The only reason we are so old is we have 8 players 29 or older and all of them except AnB are all in the process of being moved on anyway.
After the 29yo+ players we have a clear age gap of 2 years to our next oldest player who is 27.
The club must show high standards here because if we dont start having success and not only playing in finals but pushing the top 4 regularly and even jumping into a GF in the next 3 to 4 seasons we start wasting the rebuild on seasons treading water with a good list but going nowhere. Yes this season guys like Curtin and Draper who are next gen stars need games. But we have the ingredients with Peatling, Cumming and AnB to absorb the rawness of those players and push up the ladder anyway.
Is it possible to make a ruthless call and cut and pay out a contracted player (Strachan) to free up a list spot for someone else (McAndrew)
I am certain Vader will appear soon to tell you that's absolutely 1000% impossible at this point
