It's not just the pit crew & engineers which make motor racing a team sport (which it definitely is). In many competitions teams have multiple car/driver combinations, with drivers working together to achieve the best possible result for the team.
Note that the F1 Constructors Championship isn't the same as the Drivers Championship. Last year the WDC was won by Max Verstappen (Red Bull), while McLaren won the Constructors Championship. The CC is based on the points achieved by both of the team's cars, whereas the WDC is very much an individual title.
One example of how drivers act as a team is when one driver providing an aerodynamic tow for the other during qualifying, thereby allowing the other driver to achieve the absolute optimal qualifying time. Similarly, teammates will often act as a "rear gunner" for a teammate ahead of them, making it as hard as possible for faster cars to overtake them, thereby denying (or limiting) the ability of the faster car to overtake their teammate.
