First, forgive yourself. Accidents happen.

There's nothing wrong with trying to be the best person you can be and sometimes not hitting the mark. Just keep doing what you've been doing. You'll get there.

Hate card fees, but booked something the other day and they said they not only charge a card fee on all transactions, but they’ll charge you a 5% handling fee if you pay cash…
Yes I was gonna have a card fees moan too.

It might only be 1% most of the time, but it adds up. There was all this outrage when CBA said they were gonna have a $5 per month account fee. Well, these card fees are just account fees by stealth.

5% handling fee for cash? Are they kidding? Cash should mean a cheaper price if anything because it's easier to be dodgy with tax.

A great thing for quite a while in Australia was the price you saw is the price you paid. Now there's fees, surcharges and even tipping culture creeping in. Feels like the US where you need to bloody do maths every time you make a purchase.

We are so used to just waving our cards at machines here - in NZ it is almost universal to pass on a steep fee for doing so. I very quickly got into the habit of inserting card, select savings, put in pin number*... its kind of like putting the clock back 20 years and it slows down checkout lines etc but I'm ****ed if I'm accumulating one or two dollars a day in card fees just for doing shopping and having a coffee.

5% for cash? Name and shame these arsebastards. Bigfooty Boycott is a thing.

* Yes I do have a local NZ bank account and card. You can use your Aussie credit/debit cards everywhere but they can only be processed as Visa/Mastercard credit not EFTPOS and you will not escape the charges.

We charge 22c for debit card transactions, and 0.77% for credit card.. so often people will tap their phone and just pay 10, 15, 20 bucks worth of fees without even blinking.

But then there are people who moan about the 22c for debit card, and go up the road to the bank, line up, withdraw cash, drive back.. like is 22c really worth that effort

Different strokes and all I guess

Sobriety is the rule for you now making last night very much the exception. Dust yourself down, don't beat yourself up and go back to whatever it's been that you've been doing right for the last three years.

Is there, and if so why is there, a difference between tapping your debit card, and inserting your debit card and using your PIN? The money comes straight out of your account in both cases. Doesn’t it? Why is there a fee for one but not the other? Please educate me.

So the fee for inserting or tapping the debit card are both the same (22c), but if your debit card is in the digital wallet in your phone it's always a credit transaction. I think because it doesn't ask for your PIN because having the device unlocked is the security.

Physical credit card will always be .77% regardless of tap or insert
