Game Day Match simulation v GWS

I thought Wicks was good. He kept Toby quiet. No goals and very little involvement. Maybe Greene is finished but I doubt that. He might not be as good as he was but still gets involved. He had to go to the mids to get a kick. That is the job Wicks did on him
It's a match simulation !

My three main questions from yesterday:

1. Why did we not play Hamling? He had a decent showing in the All Stars game the week before. We recruited him for key defender depth. It was a meaningless trial game. Why not just give him a go?
Has any player who participated in the All-Stars team played in their first club hit-out? My guess is that, having not been with the team for a few days, and having played in Perth on Saturday night, he was not in the frame.

Let’s wait and see whether he plays AFL or VFL next Friday.

I did notice in defence we had players on opponents unlike grand final day. Interesting shift
Yes, I hate the defensive zone. The offensive zone is bad enough but the defensive one frees up space. You are guarding space so if the opponents move and spread then space opens and you have no way of closing the gaps quickly. You have to arrange the troops and that never happens in time. If you are guarding a player, playing one on one then there is no problem. They can't open space because they are under pressure all the time. They might lead into space but because everyone has an opponent you can shut space down.

I recognized that earlier. Why not look at those posts. I still think if a player does a job it should be recognised Practice Match or not. Papley got his break in Practice Matches and played Round One 2016.
Just got home from cricket and hot and don't need to read 10 pages !
Papley was always a chance, it's match simulation , no limits to who plays .
FYI we play Gold Coast in an official practise match later this week

Won a medal without stepping on the field. As deserving a premiership medal as Parker

Yeah i'd still take it :p

Seems harsh they didn't use him for a minute given they won easily.

You know you don't have to read all the posts , it's not your in tray mate :)

Like most on here, I’m a huge fan of Gus. However, I’m worried he will continue to be stuck in the ressies. He needs opportunity but at whose expense? At this stage he would have to play as a small forward but he’s not as good in this role as the other options. If he was to play in his natural position then we are not playing Heeney, Mills, Rowbottom, or Warner in the middle. He can’t play wing. He’s a victim of his specialist skill set.
Why can't he be a mid with the others? That is only 4 mids you need 6 to rotate them. He doesn't need to play forward all game. He could end up playing 40% mids.

Too much is being said about Gus, not enough is being said about Campbell as a forward.

4 goals and he had some brilliant craft work. There was a great goal where he ran directly underneath Amartey, waiting for him to drop the mark. Straight away, snap across the body and goal. You could swear Campbell has been a small forward for years.

If he plays like that all season, he'll easily get 35-45 goals
He's the perfect player to kick 4 goals and then substitute out at half time because he doesn't come back after the break anyway.

Stoppage clearances are definitely a problem. Brisbane were 1st in this stat last year.

However, they were also 10th in centre clearances.

Collingwood were 14th in centre clearances and 8th in stoppage clearances in 2023.

Geelong were 6th and 10th in 2022.

It's not the be all and end all, and I don't think we need to completely overhaul our midfield set-up to fix it. Gulden to the wing and Warner spending more time at half forward are already big improvements, and I still think the latter has plenty to offer in the midfield, as shown yesterday.

Our main 3 at CBAs being Mills, Heeney and Rowbottom is a great start.

Our main problem with clearances, and this is not easily reflected in the stats but too often we give the opposition really clean exits out of the stoppages and make it super hard for our defence to counter.

The really clean clearances are killers for us, and it happened a lot in both the 2022 and 2024 Grand Finals.

Because the other players who can play multiple positions will get rotated through there. Jordon, Gulden, McInerney. For Gus to come into our best 22, you need to give me a name of someone who goes out.

Our game was still on them line , he actually took a good mark at hf

Not much in the orher gf. Like the club
Or the other one. Or the other. Or the other. Or the other

Yep like the lot

Tom Mitchell and Kennedy can hold there heads high

To be honest Rampe is the biggest shit the bed player I have ever witnessed.

To be fair Rampe was pretty awesome in 16, he and Grundy kept us in it in defence.

While Kennedy and Mitchell carried the midfield and 26 forgot the game was on.

Rampe looked out of it completely last year :(

I love making the big calls - I called Heeney December 23 that we would see the very best of him in 24.

Hope I’m wrong but based on last year and this new development of PF, my call is he’ll play closer to Mills 24 form than Mills 22.

If he doesn’t perform, Cox needs to be ruthless with all players inc Mills.

I like fast tacklers.
I disagree that a fit Mills will be a 2024 Mills. We saw in one or two games late, that he got some touch back and deserved selection. If his current issues are minor, then I expect him to continue that trajectory where he's at least a good mid and medium down back. Maybe injury will hamper his ability to become AA again, but he can still be good.

That said, if he plays like he did in most of his 2024 matches, not his fault mind you, then I agree I'd rather have had a Sheldrick, Corey or Cleary in the mids, or a Fox down back than what he was able to provide. And would again in 2025 if the same happens. Should have come back through the VFL.
