I've come to expect the level of melts that happen on here, but geez, the new levels being reached for a preseason game... Wow.

Mate come on. If it's practice we are practising the game plan Goody wants to play in the main season and we are practising the positional changes as well. Both of those changes were a net negative in my mind.

I tell you one thing they really need to practise, that old mate danster168 has been banging on about - goal kicking.

I'm interested in what you think was positive about the practice match besides Gawn, Trac, Oliver, and the young guys?

I didn't take much positive or negative out of it. It was a praccy.

Like Gawn floating back to help defence, don't like seeing him get ironed out every time though
I don't, like seeing him floating back into the hole in defence... as he often stuffs up our tall defenders... and creates a ground ball situation for the opposition.

It worries me when our tall defenders end up sprawled on the ground. We lose all defensive structure.
I'd rather Gawn, when he's late getting back to stay on his feet, 'front and centre'... rove the ball or put on a block to assist.

It's a practice game and defense is low and yet it feels the same as a proper game, lots of inside 50s with no return except a lucky htb free kick to Oliver.
Our players mostly have not learned how to play offensive attacking footy. They look lost when trying to speed the ball forward.

When Freo started to play they're defensive press in our F50... we struggled, and our ball movement slowed to a trickle, with Salem and Lever the worst culprits.

We will not develop any good habits of attacking footy, with Salem and lever directing traffic when we have the ball.

Interesting. We smashed them in clearances. Odds on we will roll out the Gawn, Oliver, Trac and Viney midffield at first bounce of season.
Those stats are for centre bounces where Melbourne were only up 15-11 for clearance. It was the other stoppages where Melbourne got the real clearance dominance and they don’t have centre square player limits of course.

The stats had Clarry and Trac at around 50% attendance and Viney still the highest at 70% (ignoring Gawn). I know Oliver and Trac started forward a bit. Anyone know if Viney was on the bench when he wasn’t in the centre bounce or was elsewhere on the field?

That was the first thing I thought of re the goalkicking too!

I've had time to reflect, so here are my takeaways

  • First off, well umpired. Better standard than the north game. I don't recall any glaring decisions. Yes i know we shouldn't be focusing on umpiring on a preseason game, but these are AFL listed umpires they need to be derusting and making the right calls heading into a season. Better standard, i would not have complained at all about them if that was the standard round 1
  • Sorry, but that first half was putrid. I'm glad we fought back, but even for preseason it should take until half time to get a response when you're being beaten comprehensively with 1 goal on the board. I liked early we had repeat entries, but we totally wasted chances. What i disliked late and more so in the second quarter was Freo's ease in which to slingshot off half back. They're run and chain by hand made us look extremely slow and even ancient Collingwood will exploit that with their game plan in season. We have periods of locking it in yes, but when we don't the ball leaves the 50 so easily and teams can often transition the length of the ground, sometimes without kicking against us. We suck at holding teams up now which was once our one wood, i'm not saying we go back to that, but there needs to be a bit more accountability otherwise we'll get cut up. If we let teams smash us early in the real stuff, well get used to watching (to late) catch up football
  • Disappointingly constantly saw our players surrendering front spot when we kicked to them. Hands down to freo, i don't even know how they did it, but most one on one marking attempts we seemingly always where manoeuvred out of the way
  • Speaking of contested marks we got nothing other than Max that game, who was constantly risking himself in a preseason game just to give a contest half the time
  • I liked the clearance dominance in the third, again it shouldn't take to half time to get that response. Much better but a lot of wasted chances going inside 50
  • Fritsch hasn't impressed me, but not a lot of the forwards did other than Johnson who is a brute who keeps competing
  • Sharp, brought down to earth this week. I do like some of his running got rewarded late, it shows he can run out games. But pretty invisible otherwise. However i would take Sharp over Billings going forward. I hate writing players off so prove me wrong, but i don't know if a big leap of improvement or change in the way he plays is going to occur at this point of his career
  • Oliver, Fantastic. More please. Tidy some minor things up otherwise good (no player is perfect). I am glad to see reward for effort. I just wished we weren't on this narrative of a 'come back' story in the first place.
  • Rivers, looks a little lost now, like he doesn't know what to give to what position he's playing
  • Bowey is on Salem trajectory for being described as a good kick, but making rubbish plays with the ball in hand
  • Old reliable mid was good in that third... but old reliable won't and isn't always reliable anymore
  • JVR losing him early, i'm not saying one player changes your fortunes, but we seemed directionless looking forward for targets without him
  • Chandler, I'm a chandler fan, his work rate and commitment to improvement is fantastic. But at the moment he's not serving it up
  • Sparrow, great tackle within the first minutes and a nice overhead mark late. Where'd you go inbetween those moment tho? Sparrow frustrates me because as a player i like him and want him to do well like the rest of them. I actually think he can play. But he should be taking bigger steps at this point in his career
  • 11.24 is just bad, sorry

This gave me an interesting thought. What's more frustrating, easy opposition transition from the backline or repeat entries for no reward. I kind of hate dominating with no reward more, three years of that shit and we still can't nail forward entries.

Repeat entries died years ago the way to move the footy now is quickly into space with good 1-1 forward. Having territory dominance means **** all.

Then we get transitioned because we have Bowey, Howes and Windsor in defence now, Lever who's not a 1-1 defender and May who doesn't have hamstrings.

Yeah I don't get why we would move offensive guys like Windsor to our backline but still play a high press.

My guess is we really won't know how to change it and are just flipping magnets around hoping it changes

I also listened to a Gawn interview and I think someone mentioned it here already, all they've done is interchange last year's buzzwords for love. There's no real talk of needing to attack more or how we plan to do it. Just love each other and that'll fix everything
