Get the rules committee onto it. They'll announce the game is to be moved (3 days after it is played)

The Gold Coast and Essendon game doesn't have an easy alternative, so if it's possible to be played on Saturday or Sunday with Essendon flying up on the day then that's the likely solution.

Another alternative is both teams flying into Sydney on Sunday.

Sure theres plenty of issues, but the act of flying up on gameday isn't one of the things the AFL would be concerned about.

That was just a sloshy surface. With the modern football and the amount that get used at AFL level the ball wasn't even waterlogged like the old school foot-breakers those conditions used to bring about.
That can be played on, even if it does change the game completely. The winds are where things have the potential to get dangerous (and, more importantly from an AFL point of view, difficult for camera operators).

Does the AFL want game 1 to be a joke?

Because with the rain and slosh that will be the playing conditions with next to no crowd as a spectacle it would be a horrid look.

Most TV viewers will look elsewhere as well. No-one enjoys an AFL water polo game. No-one.

Just an idea, but both games could be moved to Sydney this weekend as a neutral venue option.

GC V Essendon on Saturday afternoon (3:20pm) at Giants stadium.
Brisbane V Geelong on Saturday night at the SCG.

If the GC V Essendon is postponed, these two teams are going to have to play a mid week game during the season because their mid season byes are on different weeks. Hence my idea of playing this game in Sydney this weekend.

Wont be any footy in Queensland this weekend. At any level.
Grounds may well be slop, but Saturday and Sunday look set to be OK in terms of wind. I'm guessing levels below the AFL will not have started yet (QAFL not until 29 March).
Move GC v Essendon to Sunday, and the only issue is Essendon play the following Friday.

Geelong are getting on the plane today. The latest the call can be made is three hours ago.

yes I'm fully aware, was just helpfully noting one of the more comparable recent examples where there was pre-game discussion of a TC in the vicinity and testing conditions on match day (that won't necessarily be alike).

Probably good for essendon but Gold Coast players will spend the next couple of days focussed on things like saving their homes.

Cyclone on Thursday has been known since Saturday. AFL house just sitting twiddling their thumbs for 3 days, afraid to make any decision. Pathetic
Delaying until early this morning was fine, but now the Cats are due to fly and the BOM has increased the chances of a Brisbane landfall (albeit northern suburbs); rather than turning away from SEQ; it had to be postponed earlier today.

The lack of leadership from the AFL is just shocking.
Follow the money mate. Always follow the money.

AFL won’t move this until the state government make a declaration/statement that will allow the AFL to run to their insurance company to cover costs/loss due to the games being rescheduled.

Why? The latest the call should be made is before the Cats plane takes off.

I'm sure if they moved the Thursday game to Geelong and the Saturday game to marvel, they would both still sellout anyway. Then just flip the home game later in the year. They have left it a bit late though, Dillon is indecisive to say the least.
