Follow the money mate. Always follow the money.

AFL won’t move this until the state government make a declaration/statement that will allow the AFL to run to their insurance company to cover costs/loss due to the games being rescheduled.
Yep always about the money for AFL **** the money this cyclone shouldn't be underestimated

it's absolutely the right call to end it. But imagine if they went through with it. You would probably have the whole of australia watching. Most of them likely taking bets on who would get sucked up in the sky first.

I don’t get how people don’t understand this.

The whinging is constant.

The AFL will be on the hook for ticket refunds, maybe broadcast costs, etc etc

They will have insurance but obviously it’ll only cover it if the government or whoever cancel all public events.

So they’re waiting for that.

It’s pretty straightforward.

I've worked it out. This can work. This is the current fixture for round 14,15,16

1741051730636.png

Gold Coast hosts Essendon in round 14. (Essendon vs Geelong moves to round 16 where both clubs have a bye)

Gold Coast hosts Melbourne in round 15 and GWS now have a bye in that round

GWS host Gold Coast in round 16 and Melbourne has a bye (along with Brisbane)

Bombers don't get a mid-season bye, but our Byes are in opening round and round 4. I don't care about that. Play anywhere anytime.

So Saturday?

I don't think it's a melodramatic assertion to say if Geelong are told to get on the plane, the AFL could be putting them in harm's way for the benefit of their bottom line (i.e. waiting out for official Gov't advice which would offset broadcaster pitfalls from schedule changes).

It's insane that the AFL haven't called this already. Even if the cyclone does the complete opposite to the model and heads harmlessly off to sea, it would be the right decision to postpone.

Right now, Brisbane's AFL players (and probably quite a few of GCs) are busy trying to make sure their homes are cyclone ready, which is not conducive to playing a game of footy in two days. Geelong's players won't want to go, because they could be caught in Brisbane for a few days.

You just don't do this sort of thing with a cyclone approaching. It's so easy to sort out. So easy, but the AFL are being utterly stupid and holding off on a decision.

Not to mention of course, the AFL's duty of care to the crowd - you can't have masses of people trying to leave the ground as a cyclone is approaching landfall. The game is scheduled for 6.50 Qld time, it would run for 2.5 hours, meaning an end at about 9.20, with the cyclone predicted to make landfall somewhere just after 10pm. ****ing lunacy to even be thinking "wait and see" right now.

We don't get a mid-season bye? No chance.

Who cares? It's no different to the NFL where the byes are staggered from week 3 to the second last round. Some teams get early season byes. Them the breaks.

If I were Andrew Dillion I'd offer this solution and hint to Essendon that any special request they want in their 2026 fixture they probably get.

It's better than playing Hawthorn on a 5-day break if this weeks match gets moved to a Sunday. That would totally suck.

NFL teams play 17 rounds. The proposal would mean to play 20 rounds in a row. We already crash and burn with a mid-season bye.

I'd rather play off a 5-day break although that's not good enough.

Brisbane vs Geelong seems pretty straightforward, play them R3 on the Saturday Night

Gold Coast vs Essendon is a bit more complicated. The best idea I have is to:

Play their R17 clash on the Friday Night
The pair to play each other on the Tuesday after
Both teams have their game on the Sunday for R18

It's not a good solution. I just haven't thought of one that's better yet

The decision should have already been made. Unfair for the clubs and supporters that want to travel.
I'm flying up for Sydney-Hawthorn. I'd be furious if I was flying up for the game in Brisbane and the AFL still hadn't made the decision. The obvious solution was to move it to Round 3 as soon as they found about the forecast a week ago giving fans a chance to cancel travel and accommodation. But of course, we're beholden to our broadcast overlords. Fans treated like the dog poo we're considered by those in charge.

Foxfooty paid a fortune for exclusive rights for Saturday games, I doubt they'd cop a big FTA game being moved to a Saturday night.
