Cyclone Watch: How late is too late...

Foxfooty paid a fortune for exclusive rights for Saturday games, I doubt they'd cop a big FTA game being moved to a Saturday night.
Don't give a shit. This is about having a fair and equatable solutions for the clubs and not for Fox Sport.

C Scott: “Even in principle, the idea of getting on a plane and flying into the eye of a cyclone doesn’t sound like a great idea.” [emoji38]

Chris Scott is an idiot, as if that's going to happen and Brisbane airport will be shut down before the cyclone hits.

Game will be cancelled.

It's insane that the AFL haven't called this already. Even if the cyclone does the complete opposite to the model and heads harmlessly off to sea, it would be the right decision to postpone.

Right now, Brisbane's AFL players (and probably quite a few of GCs) are busy trying to make sure their homes are cyclone ready, which is not conducive to playing a game of footy in two days. Geelong's players won't want to go, because they could be caught in Brisbane for a few days.

You just don't do this sort of thing with a cyclone approaching. It's so easy to sort out. So easy, but the AFL are being utterly stupid and holding off on a decision.

Not to mention of course, the AFL's duty of care to the crowd - you can't have masses of people trying to leave the ground as a cyclone is approaching landfall. The game is scheduled for 6.50 Qld time, it would run for 2.5 hours, meaning an end at about 9.20, with the cyclone predicted to make landfall somewhere just after 10pm. ****ing lunacy to even be thinking "wait and see" right now.
All about the dollars for the AFL
All they care about

Couldn't agree more.

I'd cancelled my account - same username without the '2' suffix - a couple of months ago but felt so strongly about the AFL's tardiness on this issue that it prompted me to get back to Bigfooty.

But then, what could you expect from a regime that tripped over themselves to tick off things like Melbourne's treatment - or lack thereof, to be more accurate - of Petracca less than a day after the incident? That was just one of several examples in 2024 when the Dillon-Kane combo seemed to be more concerned with the AFL's image than player welfare, The Cameron on-field concussion test farce is another that readily comes to mind - another incident the AFL ticked off in a hurry.

Brisbane players are busy sandbagging their homes. In which world does Dillon think they'll be in a state of mind fit enough to play on Thursday?

As a Hawks fan, I don't usually find myself agreeing with the Geelong coach but in this instance, Chris Scott is absolutely spot on when he says he's worried about his players flying into the eye of a cyclone. Which of the Geelong players' families would be even remotely comfortable with their loved ones flying to Brisbane today?

Get your act together, Dillon - it's Year 2 for you; so, no more excuses. Get off your backside and ACT!

Ok weird response
I'm talking about a cyclone here...
The AFL are waiting for the QLD Government to advise that they cancel the game, as there are financial implications regarding insurance payouts depending on who cancels the game.

These financial implications effects every club.

I know of at least one multinational company that cancelled all non-essential travel to Queensland this morning.

i highly doubt airplanes are going to flying in that cyclone regardless.

Suspect flights will just be cancelled.

They will be at some point, possibly starting later half of Wednesday night. Could be earlier, strong winds starting tonight but probably not dangerous to larger aircraft (might stop Rex and other turbo-props tonight, looking at FlightRadar not yet). It could be some time Thursday but that's less likely.
They could stop earlier, so they don't have aircraft stuck in SEQ and possibly impact more of the network than necessary.

A few seconds ago, the Qld Premier said at a press conference that they've provided the AFL (and NRL) all the information and that it's up to those organisations to make the call.

I still think my solution a few posts back is the best alternative in regards to rescheduling, even though thwre is no mid-season bye for Essendon and Gold Coast (although they do have an early season bye which most other clubs don't get.) The only other option is playing it in the bye before the finals.

Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good. There is no perfect here.
