To have any chance of winning the next election & to stop the slide of the US into a fascist state, the democrats must become a genuine progressive party and abandon all forms of identity politics. Make the conflict a class one, poor vrs rich, not a straight white male vrs the rest contest.

So, first, pick a white straight religious male charismatic candidate. Develop a few simple messages and repeat them, again and again. Blame everything on the other side and simply ignore your past messaging.

Slogans like this:

They are stealing from you

Reject government of billionaires, by billionaires, for billionaires.

Take our country back

We are the future

Honest wages for an honest day’s work

Polices:

Things that sound good, and hopefully many that are good. Heighten wage levels, create a fair workplace federal agency, empower other watch dogs to keep companies in line. Massive tax increases on the rich. Basically, add a little socialism but never say this is what you are doing. You are fighting corruption and stealing by billionaires.

Funding:

Go grass roots, try to obtain as much as you can by grifting off your base. Move away from ads to events, events that the media will cover for free, its news. Make whatever promises you like to the billionaires who fund you, that you will not eat their faces.

Tactics:

As normal blame everything on the other side. But make the certain persons the “enemy”, that are rich because they have been stealing from the people. A few particularly vile billionaires will do, Murdock, Thiel, Musk etc. Get personal, try to get them particularly Trump to react with anger. Stage ambush events, to embarrass them and their candidates. Make your own campaign events as newsworthy as possible, outrageous is good.

Behind the scenes:

Try to mollify the billionaires (not the enemy ones) in background hidden meetings, both by lying about your true intentions and by making the argument that a bigger pie is better for them as well, that getting more of less is bad business.

As for the “rest” that used to be your base, have people like AOC and Obama talk to them. Explain that social justice must apply to all, and they will get their share as well. They are not being kicked out of the tent, but others are being let into the tent.

I think you just don't counter it, let them shout it at you. They won't vote for you anyway. Keeping on trying to refute the latest insult they throw your way is one of the ways right-wing parties have forced 'the left' (whether you believe the Democrats are even left) to play the game on their terms instead of actually having to put forward any form of policy.

What you do is put forward policy that meaningfully improves people's lives, with clear information about how it's funded. That would mean actually doing some economically progressive things.

For example;

The United States spends 50% more per person than any other country on healthcare. For what they spend they could very easily fund universal healthcare if they wanted to.

It's quite likely that providing universal healthcare would cost less than their current system, for drastically better outcomes.

After this administration there's every chance that the population will be deeply fed up with the ultra-wealthy, so there may (if there's free and fair elections...) be a chance to drastically overhaul the tax system to allow for the enormous concentration of capital in the hands of the few who contribute SFA towards anyway.

I don't think it's about leaning in to, or away from, the socialism tag. I think you just ignore the name calling and put forward meaningful, progressive, life-changing policy.

You won't win a name calling match against the right-wing, they're experts at it and their one-wood is to drag you down to their level.

The Democrats were always coming from a long way back this election, and offered no real prospect of a truly economically progressive agenda. They didn't lose this election because Trump called them socialists.

Make half your speeches at a junior high level; simple message with simple numbers. Get the ads with the same on as many conservative outlets as possible. "Do you have health insurance you can afford?... that's socialism." "Will you be using Social Security? That's socialism." "Do you have someone helping to protect you from business scamming you?" etc.

This thing, conspiracy if you like, I'm finding interesting. Back in 2018 the GA governor election and voter list purge by Kemp, who was GA Sec. of State, ran the purge, and should have recused since he was the candidate, I remember reacting negatively to it mainly because it was so late in the process that most mistaken cases didn't have time to rectify it. It also highlighted the GOP efforts to use overt tactics to suppress voting.
Now, recently, there have been reports of number crunching showing that Trump benefited from various similar suppression policies around the country to run the table of battleground states in 2024. I am skeptical in that some appear to be monetization of the conspiracy.
BUT, the theory could hold water. I'd like to see some serious and rigorous analysis of numbers and results since 2018 to restore those voters and make sure there is election integrity for 2028. In any case, use it to push state governments introducing voter ID barriers, to simplify and assist the sorts of voters who would have difficulties obtaining one. It is ridiculous some of the impediments being put up by the GOP for legal citizens to vote.
