Cyclone Watch: How late is too late...

if you couldn't tell it was more than likely going to get cancelled you would have to be a moron, you don't need andrew Dillon to hold your hand and tell you don't come, the afl made the call at the exact right time
I’m tipping the clubs knew well in advance what was going to happen.

What's that got to do with anything? The AFL have made a rip roaring arse of this, they have really embarrassed themselves.
Because 2 games have been postponed due to a cyclone, how will we ever cope, as to having opening round, its not the VFL anymore unless you also want to give up your rights to MCG grand final also not that its going to matter much to your side

It was unclear this morning.

At that stage there was a “Cyclone watch”, the cyclone was actually going the other way.

As predicted it has swung back towards the coast and is now a “cyclone warning”.

No one was ever put any danger between the decision being made today rather than yesterday.

I mean, with near century high flooding likely would planes be able to return to Brisbane? Not to mention the anxiety of leaving loved ones and homes during a natural disaster to play a game in Melbourne and potentially be unable to return home for days.

Quite a lot of myopic and outright cold opinions in here. There's no way either QLD side should be playing anywhere this weekend. Period.
So all of a sudden the AFL care about the players? They made Freo & GWS play 24-48 hours after an ex-team mate died.

They could fly out tomorrow & back on Sunday. Cyclone hitting on Friday. Any players concerned could bring their family with them.

Its doable, the NRL have moved a game to Sydney. I wouldn’t move the Brisbane / Geeling game as there is an easy solution when they both have a bye.

You're right. I may have over-thought it. If Gold Coast host Essendon in round 14 and Geelong play Essendon in round 16, it works without fiddling with the other matches. Both GC and Ess wouldn't get mid-season byes
Great suggestion was made on the Collingwood board.
Essendon and GC play during the rest weekend before the finals.
Easy solution that works for all.

What if it's 13 v 17 on the ladder? 17th team knows a loss keeps them at pick #2:in the draft.

What if the Bombers are about to play finals and Merrett gets concussed whilst their opposition gets a 14 day spell and their best player gets an extra week off to recover from his concussion?

I don’t think we need to worry about Essendon or Gold Coast.
Essendon would probably prefer not to make finals, and Gold Coast are Gold Coast.

No different that isn't possible in any final round of a season.

Interesting that the NRL have gone the other way and transferred the Dolphins v Rabbitohs Friday game to Sydney.

Pretty poor form from them really, players forced to leave their families and houses as a cyclone approaches.
Some jobs have different requirements. Doctors, Nurses, Police, Emergency services, media etc will be doing the same thing when it hits.

Take the family with you if it’s a risk, they will be safer away from the cyclone anyway.

It seems so simple to have Essendon play GC in round 14 and play Essendon and Geelong in round 16 instead which is a floating round.
You could play our game on the Sunday as the Round 15 game for Essendon is Thursday.
That 10 day break is as good as a bye anyway.

If not for that really simple solution I don’t understand why it can’t be played after the final round on a Tuesday or the Wednesday.
All these late rounds are floating fixtures anyway so you could play their Round 24 games on the Thursday and/or Friday. They get the same short break heading into their game. Who cares if it’s a dead rubber? We get dead rubbers all the time late in the year.
We don’t play the final round all at once like the EPL.
If they make finals it’s plenty of time to prepare, I don’t see any issues with either of these ideas.

I don't think that would work unless it was done like this:

Round 24:
Thursday night (2 games)

Essendon vs Carlton
Port-Adelaide vs Gold Coast

5 days later on Tuesday night: Gold Coast vs Essendon

That Tuesday would be 11 days before the Saturday of the first finals weekend, so its plenty of time to prepare for a final if either side makes it.

I like the second idea.

I posted this a couple of posts earlier, but I'm just going to expand on it a bit.

OPTION 1:
Round 14: Gold Coast hosts Essendon in round 14. (Essendon vs Geelong moves to round 16 where both clubs currently have a bye)

Round 15: Gold Coast hosts Melbourne in round 15 and GWS now have a bye in that round

Round 16: GWS host Gold Coast in round 16 and Melbourne has a bye (along with Brisbane)

Done. Fixed

Bombers and Suns don't get a mid-season bye, but our Bye is in round 4. Unfortunately, If our bye remains in round 4 and that round remains unchanged, then we aren't getting a mid-season bye. Otherwise that would mean ourselves and another club can only play 22 games instead of 23.

The only way we get a mid-season bye, is if we don't get a bye in round 4. Some might say, play Essendon and Hawthorn two times in 4 weeks (i.e play in round 4 where they both have a bye). That doesn't work because the Bombers and Hawks only meet once this year, so having them play twice would require a complete restructure of the entire fixture.

Option 2:

The only other option is to play it over the spare weekend before the finals.

If anyone can come up with any other option that actually works I'd like to hear them. I'm open to ideas.

I think option 1 is good. Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

You do realize your preferred option means we don't get a bye at all this season, yeah?

Yes you do. Geelong's bye would be in Round 14.

Hmmm the way you worded it is not very clear at all. You say 'moves to Round 16 where both clubs currently have a bye'...without mentioning that Geelong's would be moved to Round 14, in order to accommodate the fixture shake up.

Get what you mean now, but would be good to edit it to include when our new bye will be.
