Strategy Curtin's role in 2025?

I do worry.

What I project will happen is that Draper vs Curtin this year shows us why it was a mistake making our big drafting play on someone who isn't a midfielder.

And makes me kinda hope we include him in a trade, and pull out a big play for Dyson Sharp. Another premium SA midfielder.
I think if he does want to go at the end of the year, we do turn him into Dyson Sharp.
This trade season could be off the hook.
You have Chad Warner maybe going back to WC, and he is going to cost a packet, then you have Reid maybe pulling the pin, and again, that's going to cost a heap to whoever he goes to.

I'd rather keep him and get Sharp somehow anyway.

I think we are going to find ourselves with quite a few fairly handy footballers who are outside our 22 after this season. There may well be some agitation.

Crazy to consider trading Curtin at the eve of his second season after a cracking pre-season.

He's also eight years younger than Dawson, and 10 years younger than Crouch.

There will be a lot of opportunities for him to grow into an important role. Even Neal-Bullen off half forward is 8 years older

Yeah Curtin is 197cm and isn't even 20. Dawson was 80ish games into his career before he played much midfield.

Curtin has ages to find his feet, and it's too early to know where his best position is going to be. If he's continuing to develop and finding ways to occasionally influence games this year he's doing fine.

This is an interesting view.

I thought it was a pretty good move. If we didn't move up, who would we have taken at 12? Goad?

We didn't pay a huge price either, we paid a future 2nd. It's not like losing that future 2nd impacted our recruiting last year, one of our better off seasons.

O'Sullivan is who were widely tipped to take with our pick that draft, and given that the phantom drafts immediately before draft night are mostly accurate (and we picked Curtin, another key defender) that's probably who we would have got.

Really hard to see how it wasn't a good decision, even if Curtin doesn't work out for whatever reason.

Wouldn't O'Sullivan have been picked the pick before us?

Oh for sure, I want to keep Curtin, but if he looks like he wants to leave, then we need to make sure it gets us someone like Sharp.

I can’t see him playing Round 1. Right now, his mindset is far too defensive for any role up forward or in the midfield. Through the preseason he was consistently second to the ball often waiting to tackle rather than attacking and hunting the footy. To be honest, I thought they might have traded him back home last year. If we had the chance to get a first-round pick in return, we should take it.

Absolutely!

You look to keep quality players, not trade them out.

By all accounts Curtin is very happy in Adelaide.

Don't need to be Einstein to find a role for him in the team... given he can play a few different roles. You find ways to play best talent

He is happy in Adelaide & is not looking to leave.

I think the expectation was that Curtin would be picked up by the Cats, and O'Sullivan would come to us.

Twomey's phantom draft has us taking O'Sullivan, with the other potential pick being Curtin (if we could trade up the board) and possible links to Leake, Tholstrup and Darcy Wilson. So heavily linked to a taller player, likely a defender.

Hopefully, however, if he finds himself playing in the 2nd for an extended period, and WC come in with a far bigger offer than we do, that can change pretty quickly.
Then we sack Nicks instead!

Finally!

Someone gets it! If he decides he can’t wait for Crouch or similar to go then that’s tough t***ies. He’s 197cm, or an inch and a half shorter than TT! He’s only had one full pre season so he’s gonna take time. I’m not rushing him in and playing him before he’s ready. Give him a season to allow him to bulk up a bit. Next season I’m confident he’ll show he’s worth the high draft pick he is.

Can I ask how Crows posters view Dan as a tall defender vs Murray, Burgess, Worrell, Borlase and Keane? Although he’s versatile Dan was an outstanding CHB in juniors and he looks to have put in a fair bit of muscle over summer. Not suggesting he goes to a Tom Hawkins type but Caminiti R1, Caddy R2, Darling R3, Walter R4 might be worth exploring with an already tall forward line and midfield rotations hard to come by.

People are incredibly impatient, it would be the same posters who were insisting that we trade Fogarty earlier in his career, now he;s untouchable and we wouldn't consider it. I don't care if it takes another 2-3 years for Curtin to develop into a powerhouse, you don't just give up on that type of player 12 months into his career ffs...

No, he's a very poor defender. However, his main current problem is that he seems to have very little confidence and zip.
Whether it's him or our development is another question. This lack of confidence far outweighs any concerns about position.

Everything from the club this off-season (including interview by Kane Cornes on SEN with Jordan Dawson literally yesterday) suggests he is currently a wing-half forward with long term plans for midfield role. We are well stocked in the key defender positions (Butts and Borlase are good depth options) and I don't think you will see DC in the backline in 2025.

All of those opposition forwards would sooner be covered by Max Michalanney, Keane, Nick Murray or Worrell ahead of Curtin.
