Wigg proved he wasnt up to AFL standard. Nothing wrong with a coach ruling a line through a player. Nicks did it with McHenry in the second half of the season once he was dropped.
Was it don or maybe it was sando that didn’t talk to the bottom half of the list.

Curtin, from back pocket to sub to forward pocket now
I don't think this is the best way to develop him
Genuine utility but agree he needs to be plonked in one position and go for it. With our current side perhaps he’s best as a high half forward or wingman, a la Tom Lynch role - though I’m speculating off very limited info. Would be good to see him get bursts in the middle every now and then too, but I’m not banking on it

I do however think he needs to be more aggressive when he gets his chances. He does seem to sit back a bit and have a more defensive mindset in games at least (including Brisbane trial).

Whether that’s his own mindset or a coaching thing, or both, I’m not sure - but sounds similar to Chayce Jones’ early years.

Would really love to see him play without shackles.

Also anyone else concerned Draper was in the B team?

I seriously hope he’s not a victim of Nicks’ January selections like Nank (absurdly) seems to be, and Worrell / Dowling have been in years gone by…

Not really.

He'll play plenty of senior footy this year even if hes not playing R1, which I think he will anyway.

Better him training against the likes of Dawson, Rankine and Soligo and learning

Fortunately, the A and B teams here are not full sides of 23 players. Draper appears to be on the cusp, somewhere in that 20th - 25th player selected range, which is probably about right at this very early stage of his career.

Not really. Not playing Round 1 won't change his trajectory much. From most of Bigman's reports it sounds like he often isn't doing full sessions so I can understand wanting to see how he goes running out full games now that he's under AFL training loads.

You can play five mids, two wingmen and a ruckman (plus seven forwards and seven defenders).

We all want Draper there. He has a challenge though, due to Crouch, Dawson, Peatling, Soligo and Rankine probably being ahead of him for this midfield spots.

Nicks has often played young players early - Soligo, Berry, Max, Rachele etc. But there needs to be a spot.

I understand fresh legs and...
But in the last quarter against Brisbane, SID DRAPER did more to win that game for us than anyone else. Everyone in football saw...and loved what he did.

I am convinced that very soon, our early season midfield rotation will need to adjust to fit him in.

Dawson, Crouch, Rankine, Soligo, Peatling all need to recognise that Sid might be a better midfielder than the lot of them by seasons end.

Some of his burst efforts were elite. When was the last time a crows midfielder explode out the front of a pack? Sid's different to Rankine and Danger but they might the last one's. Pretty good company actually.

I hope he's managed appropriately this year. But doesn't mean wrapped in cotton wool. Let him rip into it. He's going to be first picked in our team one day.

Lets not get too carried away about "winning" a trial game

Why not? Is it not the purpose of a trial game to test a strategic plan and find a winning method and, in the case of young and inexperienced players, discover their capabilities?

But then again, you're quite right, let's not get carried away. The game was pointless and we discovered nothing. I can't even believe you've strained yourself with the effort of posting on such trivial matters like a trial game.

Cheer up mate. The real footy starts this week.

I'd probably pump the breaks a little. Draper has something that most of our players don't have in terms of that breakneck pace and intensity on the ball, but there is more to being a great midfielder than that. Even if his output started to match that of our other midfielders, opposition coaches would then start putting time into stopping him. I can't see him drawing equal with the likes of Dawson and Rankine in his first season, let alone getting ahead of them... although I wouldn't be complaining!

It's pretty clear at this stage that he will feature prominently in 2025.

No, the purpose of a trial game is just to get you up to speed for round 1 in an environment you can't replicate in training, as it is namely against another team who are trying to do something different to what you are + getting back into match day routines.

Discovering a young players capabilities is done in training. Ditto strategic plan, though that gets revisited once you go on a run of losses. It is like a real game in the sense that if you're fighting for the last couple of spots in the lineup, it may be a golden ticket to win them, but most of your best 22 is pretty much sorted by this point.

Suspect that pushes Curtin out of the side - which I thing is okay

Do we just run 18 in these match sims?

Or do we have the whole 22 and include rotations?

Name your team where there isn’t at least a spot for Draper as sub.
