Is he a poor defender or was he a victim of poor coaching by allowing him to be dragged deep into isolated match ups in his first couple of games? No, he's a very poor defender. However, his main current problem is that he seems to have very little confidence and zip.
Whether it's him or our development is another question. This lack of confidence far outweighs any concerns about position.
In AFL matches, yes.

Obviously I’m not inside the four walls but he doesn’t seem to know what his role is or where he fits into that team. Is it possible that’s where the perceived lack of confidence would be coming from?

I think this season changes it all up, he will get more confidence the further the season goes on
Was never short of confidence as a junior! Is he a poor defender or was he a victim of poor coaching by allowing him to be dragged deep into isolated match ups in his first couple of games?

He’s just a little bit of a slower burn than most on here hoped a pick 6 would be. This is his first full preseason and I reckon he’ll be just fine. What Dawson said is pretty much spot on.Was never short of confidence as a junior!

Picking Curtin based on potential is fine, but part of having reasonable depth in the squad is that promising players will have to miss out. There's no way there's enough room to fit all of those guys into the team without dropping someone who is fully deserving of a spot. Even if you take the BF route and drop all of Milera, Crouch and Laird forever, that's still not enough spots.Which includes Dowling, Taylor, Ryan, Nankervis..
But this won't happen with a coach trying to save his job with a high ladder position. Even though these kids get him there!

It comes down to whether we think we have developed enough talent to be a genuine premiership contender now.Picking Curtin based on potential is fine, but part of having reasonable depth in the squad is that promising players will have to miss out. I think with smart coaching, we have an absolute gem in CurtinWe've been crying out since Danger for an elite midfielder, with the build of Bont, Cripps or Tom Green and now we've landed one some supporters are jumping off and ready to move him on after seven games. Paddy averaged 14 possessions, with only six kicks, in 42 games in his first three seasons with the Crows.
Curtin has speed, agility, power, a long left peg and strong marking ability. The current skipper sees him as a dominant midfielder. He's going to be a gun. Happy 20th birthday for yesterday Dan, future Crows dual Premiership Captain and Brownlow medallist.
I agree with that, but in this case it's just about being realistic if you are talking about trying to get all of Nankervis, Taylor, Dowling and Ryan to 50 games, along with guys like Curtin, Draper, Max, Worrell etc. We obviously aren't picking all of of those guys in the team throughout the year to get their game count up.It comes down to whether we think we have developed enough talent to be a genuine premiership contender now.
If yes, then by all means pick purely on a week to week basis. Best performing, win now.
If we think we'll need the likes of Draper and Curtin to become A Graders in order to genuinely contend, then take the required steps to make that happen.
BUT...i want us to make locking him away long term priority number 1. Then we can afford the luxury of him taking another 2 or 3 years as he will be on our list in our side, not back in Perth doing it.People are incredibly impatient, it would be the same posters who were insisting that we trade Fogarty earlier in his career, now he;s untouchable and we wouldn't consider it. I don't care if it takes another 2-3 years for Curtin to develop into a powerhouse, you don't just give up on that type of player 12 months into his career ffs...
I'm still on the Curtin train. Trade Matthew Nicks instead.
He's happy in Adelaide & there is no substance behind these rumours.I think with smart coaching, we have an absolute gem in Curtin
That's where the trade talk comes from
YepIt's crazy that we traded up to pick him but don't know where to play him. It's like he's too good not to be playing but not yet good enough for any position.
Having said that, if he's got the tank I would put him on a wing. Let's give him the freedom to find out where he's most productive.
