The only quarter I’ll accept inaccuracy truly hurting us was the first quarter

We had a chance to really apply some scoreboard pressure and we messed it up.

After that? GWS were playing rope-a-dope with us for 3 quarters. You could see it even on TV. Their backline was the only line at full strength and they trusted their backs to withstand the pressure, which we also helped with our entires.

Once we tired ourselves out, they just went bang.
Why are you ignoring 3rd QTR inaccuracy its was as bad as the 1st QTR. In those QTR’s combined we kicked a 2.11.

5.0 and we are at best a goal up?

So? They still would have overrun us in the last

We didn’t look switched on at all.The game was a carbon copy of the corresponding game last year.Clearly the players don’t like playing in the heat of early March, especially on the agricultural Showgrounds in Sydney. We have a terrible record there and it shows every time we play there. If we don’t bounce back quickly next week against Port Adelaide then alarm bells will be ringing at the club.

We won CP, GBall, and Clearances and tackles I50, so you’re wrong about pressure. The only thing you’re right about is transition.
As for poor kicking, without scoreboard pressure GWS were buoyed, and good luck to them.
If we converted our 3rd QTR dominance into Goals it could easily have been a different result.

You're right that if we kicked the ball better there could have been a better result.

<> What I saw was a pretty even matchup until midway in the 4th quarter.

<> Giants dominant in the first quarter then Pies dominant in the 2nd and 3rd quarter, with the exception of the last 5 minutes in the 2nd quarter where the midfielders were witches hats when Giants rebounded resulting to 3 easy goals. All midfield generated.

<> Pies inside 50 entries were inefficient and easy challenged because Pies were just too short. Taylor for Giants was best on ground for them and he ate up defensively. No resistance on him.

<> Pendlebury is simply too old now. Especially to play in the middle or as a ball follower. He needs to come off the bench and play forward uptop and use his vision and decision making to find forwards. Defensively up the ground he's just way too slow and doesn't have the burst anymore.

<> Sidebottom, Lipinski, Pendlebury, Jaicos are all silky skilled players but lack the athleticism and acceleration to defend speedsters. This is going to be a weakpoint teams will exploit.

<> Perryman is skilled but he isn't a thoroughbred athlete. So having Perryman, Long, Allan along with Lipinski, Pendlebury meant Pies have an abundance of medium sized players who are skilled but bring the same traits to the table.

<> Membrey, Mihocek, Elliot, Schultz share similarities to the above. All move similarly and aren't elite athletes. Elliot is clearly showing his age. Membrey and Mihocek need to be spread out from each other because they duplicate the same skill sets.

What I think needs to happen,

<> Make Quaynor a fulltime midfielder. He's lost some of his bulkiness and looked spry and agile. He has the speed, athleticism, quickness and burst to defend but also create offensive attacks.

<> De Goey also needs to be fulltime midfielder to help with the lack of speed.
Which means less forward time but that is OK since Membrey was brought in to help.

<> Keep the backline as is and limit Jaicos back there. Houston fixes this. I would also move Reef more uptop and put Moore deep as he is 6'8 and Pies need tall timbers out back. Hoskin Elliot may need to play more backline roles due to his versatility.

<> Get Mason Cox back ASAP. McStay is awful as ruck.
Way too early to call out Pendles as too slow for the midfield. People made similar comments two or three years ago. We had a very poor game. Shit happens. If it becomes a pattern we can talk. I think Pendles will be fine.

Pendlebury ended up working his way into last season becoming an important cog in our modified once again but playing as defensive mid but we’ve got Perryman playing that role.

Where he fit in this season is less clear and given the lack of pace this team has something has to give.

What this game showed is the same issue we had for most of 2024.

Either Nick Daicos is BoG or we struggle
Come on. Take Bont, Warner, Cripps or Neale out of their respective line ups and that will have a big impact on their chances. If Degoey is in the middle, Nick can have an average game and we can still win. Like any team's star, they are the difference in tight games.

Possibly, but momentum is a huge thing in footy these days, and when you go in to the last quarter with momentum it’s not often that a team obliterates you like GWS did to us.

Missed opportunities in the first and 3rd quarters really hurt us and took the wind out of our sails. And it’s pretty clear we can’t rely on those famous last quarter comebacks anymore, at least not against the really top quality sides.

Score board pressure would have impacted them, and conversely we would have had momentum.

I’m a Maths protege you’ve got no chance.

No you’re right. My math was off

If we kicked 5 straight we actually would have been a point down

lol

We had control of the game for more than half of it, we just got shit on when they had control, bad kicking in the first, and I think tired bomb it long in the third killed us. It's easy to look at the score and the last quarter and pretend that we were outclassed for the whole game, but we owned the third quarter in terms of control and just couldn't score and had the better of most of the first quarter. I think GWS (Alongside Hawthorn) are out worst match ups, and getting them early is unfortunate.

Positives:
Perryman looked strong, makes me think we rely on Mitchell less.
Reef looked okay.
Allen looks like he belongs at the level
Sidebottom looks decent to me and skill levels are good.

Concerns
Bad skills - shocking kicks into 50 and bad missed marks that hurt us.
Speed - we looked slow especially in the midfield.
Pendles - looks off it, i'm worried about him, last half of last year and this game looks slow and untidy with skills.
Tactics - We allowed them to congest our forward half and leave theirs open which suited their game style.
Missed chances - we seem to turn almost guaranteed goals into fumbles and missed shots which killed momentum.

A fit Jordy in the middle and Houston into the backline has me positive. I hope they don't drop Allen, for me WHE and Lipinski should be in danger on that performance.

The humidity in Sydney this time of year is much much higher than in Melbourne. If you're not acclimated then it sucks the life out of you.
That was my view as well. GWS players live and train in those conditions the bulk of the time, so their bodies would be more equipped to deal with the rigors and vagaries of the weather, than those that FIFO.

Even we saw on Friday night, no Errol affected Sydney massively

Hope everyone woke up and realised the season isn’t over after Round 0.

The effort definitely wasn’t there yesterday and we hope that it was a wake up call. We should beat Port and the Dogs at the G, suddenly we’re 2-1 with positive %.

There are still 21 games to be played. Yesterday was a blip on the radar and when the fixture got released, this was a game that we probably pencilled in as a loss. Yes they had injuries but they’re obviously a well coached outfit. It’s not like we lost to a bottom 8 side.

On to the next one!
I know I did. Round zero means precisely nothing.

I mean GWS were missing some of their best players too

I thought it was a really competitive game until half way through the third with them holding sway on the scoreboard due to us fluffing opportunities. But physically we were cooked, and we wouldn't have held on even if we had a big lead.
